It was only “common sense” for Alex to take three steps backward as soon as Mr David appeared before him. Mr David was one of the few men that Alex knew who still kept fit. He took early morning runs and was a fitness devout. Not like Alex wouldn’t be able to take him on in a bout but why would you even want to take on your father-in-law in the first place? The man looked ready for a fight. He had his fighting gloves in his hand and was dressed for the gym.
“I am going to the gym. Walk with me.” Mr David said and without another word, he started jogging off to the gym.
Alex stared at him as he jogged off. “But he said walk with me.”
Without another thought. Alex jogged off after him.
***
“You throw solid punches, Sir.” Alex said as he took off his gloves. He reached for a towel to wipe off the sweat trickles around his brows.
Mr David took a seat beside his future son-in-law and handed him a bottle of water. “When all you have got are two women in your life, you’ll feel the constant need to be enough for them.” He replied.
Alex stared at him, slightly confused. “I don’t follow, Sir.”
“Alex, I like to hit the gym. I have never stopped liking it. Being in the Military for as long as I have been is enough reasons to stay fit and it can’t go away now that I am out.” He said. “But, I just like looking good.” He added with a corny smile.
Alex nodded as he watched Mr David drink his water. He was surprised when he got a call from him that morning asking him to join him at the gym for a round bout. Mr David had also warned him not to breathe a word about it to Lola and he obliged. He had thought it a joke but after a couple of jabs to the floor, he realised that it was real and happening.
Mr David stared at Alex. “Please, don’t hurt her.”
“Excuse me?” Alex probed.
Mr David blinked. “I love my little girl so much. Make no mistake, her mother loves her equally and maybe even more, but Lola has always been my strength. She has always given me a reason to keep fighting for something in life. She’s always been so smart, so beautiful, so ambitious, so generous and loving. She’s pushed me beyond limits I never thought I’d reach and I am thankful for the women in my life and I love them so much and I am selfish, but I have to let Lola go…she has always been my princess, my girl, my little girl, but now she is a woman. A beautiful woman. A woman who no longer needs daddy everyday but her own man and she found you and you have to be a lucky man to have found her.” He said and looked up to hold back his emotions.
Alex was stunned at this moment. All this while, he had been reeling in the excitement of almost being a married man, but Mr David’s words had upset him. The man didn’t mean to upset him but there are ways you can say some words to frighten another person. Alex swallowed as Mr David wiped his forehead with the towel. “I…I won’t hurt her.” He said.
Mr David stared at him. “Do you just drive a knife through someone’s belly because it’s fun?” he asked.
Alex stared at him. “I…I don’t understand.”
“I am just saying that there might be tendencies for you to hurt her, but please, my baby girl doesn’t deserve it.” He said.
Alex swallowed painfully. “Sir, I love Lola and I promise to love her with all my life. I would never stop loving her, I would protect her and I won’t hurt her.”
Mr David nodded with some optimism but without total conviction. He had been married to his wife for about twenty-five years now and he still couldn’t say he had done everything right but they were still standing and that had to count for something.
Alex knew he’d wanted forever with Lola.
“The day you hurt her, I am going to hit you.” He said with a smile. “Anyway, let’s go home, the ladies would be waiting.” Mr David said as he gathered his bags.
“The ladies?” Alex asked.
Mr David smiled. “Nothing is more attractive than your woman seeing a fit man covered in sweat.”
Alex raised an eyebrow.
“Really? You didn’t know that?” Mr David asked with a soft chuckle. “Come on, Son. It’s not good to keep them waiting.” He said and walked out of the gym.
***
Alex took a deep breath as he strapped his gloves into his hand. He tried to avoid Mr David’s stern gaze which hadn’t left him since they got into the ring.
The Gym attendant joined them. “Sir, have you checked out your wrist?”
“I’ll be fine.” Mr David replied, without taking a look at the attendant. His eyes were on Alex who tried hard to pretend as if he couldn’t notice them.
The Gym attendant walked away.
Alex mustered all the courage he could and stared at him. “Sir, the reason why I called you-”
“-I don’t want to listen.” Mr David replied.
Alex nodded. “I know, but, I have to tell you what happened.”
“Do you think I do not already know? Do you think my family is not already aware that Lola has served you divorce papers?” Mr David asked him as he clenched his gloves together.
Alex blinked. “Okay, Sir. I…I know I have disappointed you.”
“No, you haven’t. It’s a work in progress.” He replied.
Alex was confused. He wiped some sweat off his face. “I am really sorry, Sir.”
Mr David stared at him. “That’s the problem. You are sorry.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Don’t say anything!” Mr David yelled. “I begged you. I told you not to hurt her. Why did you do it?”
Alex swallowed. “I was stupid.”
“And now?” The Older man asked.
Alex stared at him. “I…I don’t want to lose her.”
Mr David took off his gloves angrily and threw them to the floor. He then reached for the sides and took a seat. He was confused, sad and angry. “I just wish you didn’t do this, but it’s done, we need to find a solution to this and pretty fast too.”
Alex took off his gloves and watched Mr David as he seemed to be talking to himself. The man wouldn’t look at him. Was he so annoying or was he just expecting too much?
“Do you have a plan to win her back?” Mr David asked.
Alex stared at him. “I…I took her to our meeting spot and it turned out to be my biggest regret.”
Mr David stared at him. “Why? That’s supposed to be romantic.”
“She met someone else.” Alex said.
Mr David stopped for a moment. SHE MET SOMEONE ELSE? That didn’t seem like his Lola. But still it was amusing to hear Alex sulk saying it. The Older man burst into an awkward laugh. “Karma…Karma…”
Alex sighed. “Yes, I know. Karma.”
“But then, explain it to me. What exactly happened?” he asked.
“Apparently this guy had run into my Lola somewhere before and as fate would have it, he was at the bar and singing for the Lola he had met.” Alex started.
Mr David stopped him. “Let me get this right. He had planned a song for her not knowing she was married and coincidence would have him meet with her again when you were trying to rebuild your home?”
“Yes, sir. That’s exactly the situation.” Alex said.
Mr David shook his head. “This is serious.”
“I know.” Alex replied.
“Now, you need a real plan and this will take effort and you are not going to like it, but you are going to do it if you want to win Lola back.” Mr David said as he gathered his bags.
“I am ready to do anything. Anything.” Alex said eagerly as he joined Mr David in gathering the bags.
Mr David stared at him. “Let’s go home.”
“Err?” Alex asked looking confused.
Mr David nodded. “We’ll talk about it on the way home.”
Alex nodded. “Thank you so much, Sir. I really-”
Mr David silenced Alex with a punch in the face. Alex crashed to the floor from the effect. Mr David felt the pain in his hand as he tried to stretch his wrist. “I said I would hit you if you ever hurt my daughter. I meant it.” He added as he stared at Alex. “Now, let’s go.”
Alex massaged his face and for the next second he thanked God that Lola didn’t have brothers.
***
Lola pulled up at the mall. She had woken up and searched for Alex to no avail. Her pride wouldn’t allow her call him so she decided to ignore the thoughts that maybe something terrible had happened to him. The burden to know his whereabouts rested on her heavily. Why she couldn’t get over a man that had hurt her deeply was like a mystery to her. She was supposed to be mad at him, but she couldn’t help feeling guilty for last night’s dinner being close to a disaster despite all of Alex’s efforts to try to make it work. But she wasn’t going to give herself room to be sorry. Alex hurt her and she won’t take the punishment for it. She would do the household shopping like a dutiful wife that she was until she finally separated from Alex.
She moved the trolley swiftly from the food to the toiletry section and in no time, she was done. It was routine for her. She arrived at the counter and started to arrange her goods on the table. The attendant turned towards her. Her heart skipped a beat as she stared at him. “So you work as an attendant too?”
George smiled at her. “We keep running into each other.”
“Coincidence. Please take my order.” She said as she looked away.
He smiled faintly. “My shift is actually over, but I’ll take your order.” He replied and started preparing her an invoice.
Another attendant joined them. “George, thanks a lot, man.”
“I’ll be out of here soon.” George said to him.
George packed up Lola’s order. “Here you go, ma’am. Your bill is twenty-five thousand naira.”
The other attendant stepped forward. “I’ll take over from here, George. You need to leave.”
George nodded and stepped away.
Lola watched him leave till he was no longer in sight and then finished up her order.
She pushed her trolley out of the mall and into the car park.
“Ma’am!”
Lola turned and watched George as he ran across cars to meet up with her. She chuckled slightly as she watched him stop a moving car just to get across.
“Ma’am? That’s a nice name.” she said as she opened the car trunk.
George smiled and helped her with her bags. “How are you doing?”
“Very well, and you?” she asked as she shut the trunk.
He nodded. “I am good.”
“So…you work as an attendant too?” she probed.
He nodded. “Yes, I do.”
“Interesting.” She replied and walked over to the driver’s seat.
George cleared his throat. “Are you busy?”
“Busy?” she asked.
“Like…do you want to go somewhere with me?” he asked.
She stared at him. “Go somewhere with you? Wouldn’t that be weird? I just came to get groceries.”
He nodded. “My Bad. I…I just want to get to know you…and I know that it sounds ridiculous, but I…I just want to.”
Lola took a deep breath and stared at her wristwatch. “Where are we going to?”
“I know a really nice spot some blocks away.” He replied. “We could walk.” He added.
Lola shrugged and locked the car. “Okay.”
“So…how’s the weekend going?” George started as they walked.
She stared at him. “The weekend hasn’t even started. It’s still morning.”
“Yes, forgive me. I am just excited.” He replied.
She stopped and stared at him. “George?”
“Yes?”
“I am married.”
He nodded. “Okay…I am just getting to know you.”
“No. You know what you want and it can never happen.” She replied.
He blinked. “But…but you-”
“-don’t seem happy?” she asked.
He nodded. “You seem so sad…hurt and in a lot of pain.” He replied.
She smiled and stared at the eatery. “Pizza spot?”
“Yeah.” He replied and pushed the door open. “After you.”
George made the order and joined her at their seat. “So, I guess my feelings are going to waste.”
Lola smiled. “Your feelings? Do you just catch…I mean, do you just literally catch feelings for someone from seeing her once?”
“Haven’t you heard about love at first sight?” he asked.
Lola scoffed. “Do you believe in that?”
“I do. As a matter of fact, maybe that’s what happened to me. I couldn’t get you out of my mind since that day and I haven’t been able to yet.” He said as he took a bite from the pizza. “Maybe you could help me?” he asked with a smile.
Lola sighed. “George, I am married and that makes me unavailable.”
“Okay…let’s be friends.” He said.
She smiled. “Friends? George…come on. You don’t just ‘let’s be friends’ after what I know you want.”
“Lola, you are married. I respect that.” He replied.
“Then, move on.” She said, cutting in. “You’d be fooling yourself by spending more time around me and expecting it to all go away.” She concluded as she took a bite from the pizza. “This is good pizza.”
George blinked as he watched her eat. “What happened to your marriage?”
“I don’t understand.” She said as she wiped her mouth.
He swallowed. “You are a good woman. A very good woman. What went wrong?”
“How are you so sure that I am a good woman?” she asked.
He shrugged. “I just know it.”
“George, it is never as it seems.” She replied.
He sighed. “I don’t believe you. How did he hurt you?”
“Of what good would it do if we have this discussion? We are flying around in circles, George.” She said.
“Why are you a good woman, Lola?” he asked.
She shrugged with a smile. “All the bad people are already taken.”
He nodded. “Lola, I like you very much. And it hasn’t changed knowing that you are married. I respect you and your marriage and I am going to stay away from your marriage but not totally away from you. I am going to be there in every corner, watching, waiting and hoping…”
Lola sighed. “Hope can be a very feeble thing to hang on to.”
“I’ll take my chance.” He replied.
“I’d never be yours.” she said dumbly. Lola wasn’t convinced of that statement when she made it but she just did. “I’d never be yours.” she reiterated.
George clenched his teeth. “I know…it’s a big deal to fight for a married woman.”
“No. It’s a big deal to fight for a woman in love.” She replied with moist eyes. She picked her keys and purse. “I have to go now.”
George took a deep breath and rose to his feet. “Would you give a number?”
“No. I can’t give you any real opening.” She said and approached the door. She stopped and stared at him. “Besides, you always seem to find me.” She concluded with a faint smile and walked out.
George swallowed painfully. He had heard so much to make him give up, he knew the battle to win Lola’s heart just went a notch higher. That did hurt painfully. He sipped some juice to ease his pain, and then he descended on the pizza and then he wouldn’t stop eating it.

Jude stepped back as Alex walked into his house. “Morning, bro.”
“Good morning.” Alex replied and took a seat.
Jude took a seat opposite him. “What’s up? You look like a mess.”
“I am a mess.” He said.
Jude stared at him. “Why?”
“You know why.”
“Lola, right?” Jude probed with a sigh. “Man, you have no idea how stupid I feel about allowing you do the score game with women right now.”
“It’s not entirely your fault. A better man would have done the right thing.” Alex said.
Jude blinked. “You are a good guy, Alex.”
“Don’t patronize me.” He replied as he rose to his feet.
“I take it as yesterday’s dinner didn’t go well.” Jude said as he joined him by the window.
Alex nodded. “It was a disaster. I am losing her. She is not even flinching. She hates me too much.”
“Alex, I think you should chill. Lola doesn’t hate you. She is probably just too mad at you right now. Maybe I should see her?”
Alex shook his head. “Nah…I have something I must do if I need to get her back. I am not so sure about it though.”
“What is it?” Jude asked.
Alex returned to a seat. “I don’t know if I want to talk about it now.”
“It’s okay if you don’t want to talk. Just think through and think really hard about it. If it is worth it, go for it. If not, don’t take a chance.” Jude replied.
“Jude!!!” A female voice echoed from inside the house.
Alex looked concern as he turned around.
Jude smiled at Alex. “You know what it is.”
“Bro, haven’t you learnt a thing from me?” Alex asked.
Jude shrugged with a grin. “I have learnt a lot…and I don’t know if I can keep mighty Jude zipped even when married, so I won’t even get married.”
“Love happens, Jude.” Alex said, rising to his feet.
Jude nodded. “I have got a bullet for cupid. It ain’t biting me with that love bug anytime soon.”
Alex took a deep breath. “I feel sorry for you.”
“I feel sorrier for you, Alex. You are the one about to lose all the gold you’ve got. Fight for Lola. Good women are hard to find.” Jude replied as he led Alex to the door.
Alex nodded. “Take care, bro.”
“And you too, man. Hang in there.” Jude said as they hugged.
***
Lola felt like she was doing something wrong by even giving George the opportunity to sit with her. Maybe it was true that women did know how to emotionally cheat on their spouses without even going to bed with another guy. Did she portray herself as available to George by even accepting to talk to him? She didn’t know if she was staying angry at Alex for too long but she didn’t know if she could trust him easily again.
She ran her fingers through her hair as she cried. All she wanted was for someone to tell her that she would be able to trust Alex easily again. It seemed so hard at the time. She was driving in her car alone and if anyone needed convincing, it was her…and yes, she had to do it alone.
She stepped on the brakes as she approached the traffic sign. She took a deep breath as a police officer approached her.
“Just my luck!” she said.
***
Alex stared at the clock and the door. He had taken different postures while waiting for Lola for some time now. Could she have packed out of the house already? Lola might be mad at him but he knew she wouldn’t just do that. It wasn’t her nature.
He heaved a huge sigh as the gates opened and her car drove in. His heart pounded faster than ever at the fear and thought of losing Lola. The door opened and he watched her walk in with the grocery bags. He hurried to meet her. “Let me take them.” He said and collected the bags.
He returned to the living room almost immediately. Lola had sunk into a chair. She looked exhausted. “Hi.” He said.
She ignored him.
“Lola?”
She turned in his direction without saying a word.
“Lola, do you still love me?” he asked. “Please?”
She sighed and looked away.
“Lola, say something. Please.”
Lola scoffed and started to walk away from him.
“Lola!!!” he yelled.
Lola stopped and stared at him. “What?!” she yelled back.
“Lola David, I have signed the divorce papers. They are upstairs. You can go.” He replied with wet eyes.
Lola gaped as her eyes went wet.

Alex’s eyes ached as he saw Lola. There could only be one reason why she would be at the bar. It had to be George. He took a deep breath and gathered his steps with courage as he approached his wife. She didn’t take her gaze off him. She just stared. The Lola he knew would be slightly nervous. This one wasn’t. She just watched him as he took what might be the longest steps of his life towards her. “Hi.” He said lamely as he stared at her. Yes, ‘Hi’. They had now become the ‘Hello…Hi’ couple. It’s funny how a lot can change due to one person’s carelessness. “What…What do you want here?” he asked.
Lola raised an eyebrow. “The last time I checked, I was the music aficionado, not you.”
“On a Friday?” he probed as he slipped one hand into his pocket.
Lola sighed. “What do you want, Alex?”
What did he want? It was Lola he wanted. Could he have her? That…he didn’t know. Alex knew he didn’t have much to do at the bar anymore. He took one glance at Doubra and then walked out of the bar.
Lola’s heart skipped as though Alex had literally walked out of it. Her cold eyes held fear for a moment as she turned around after Alex. She took a deep breath as she watched him walk away and finally out of sight. She turned around as Jude cleared his throat. “Hi.”
“How are you doing, Ma’am?” Jude asked.
She stared at him with some disdain. “Good.”
“Of course, it was a pleasure running into you, here. Nice bar.” He added and walked out.
Doubra took a deep breath as Lola focused on the exit. Nothing had gone according to what they had planned. She reached for Lola’s shoulder. “Hey.”
“Huh?” Lola asked, probably stoned out by all that had just happened.
“I think we should leave.” Doubra said.
Lola nodded numbly and walked out with her friend.
George sighed as he freed himself from Bode’s grip. “Are you happy now?”
“What? You think I was going to let you go and meet her right there?” Bode asked.
George took a seat. “Maybe I just her lost her forever.”
“Maybe not…but, I think there is a lot of drama going on here and it sure is something that you do not want to be part of.” Bode replied.
George stared at him. “What drama?”
“They didn’t look very much like the happy couple, did they?” Bode asked. “I don’t think you want to be that guy.”
“What guy?” George asked.
Bode stared at her. “The guy who brings everything all crashing down.”
“Bode…”
Bode nodded. “I get it. She’s hot and you liked the lady before you knew who she was, but if there is any unhealthy drama between couples, back off. What would be would be.”
George blinked. Bode was right but his heart wouldn’t stop still. “I’d be a coward to give up.”
“And you’d be worthless to go after her.” Bode replied.
George stared at him. “Bode?”
“Maybe not worthless…but irresponsible.” Bode replied with a faint smile.
George wrestled with his thought as he drummed his fingers on the table.
“I get it…you like her, but brother, don’t go after her.” Bode added.
George stared at him. “She came here for a reason.”
“Yes…and don’t even start thinking that she came here for you.” Bode retorted.
George was confident that she did. “She came here for me, Bode. I believe it.”
“You know who I think came here for you?” Bode asked. “Her husband and his pal. They would have broken you into pieces if not for that little distraction. Take my advice, buddy. Run when you still have legs.” He concluded and poured himself a drink. “Free scotch?”
George stared at him. “Since when did it become your right to have free scotch?”
“I have one glass per day. We could share mine.” Bode added with a smile. “Think about what I have just told you. You don’t want to be that guy, man.”
George turned away as he sighed. “I want her.”
“Yes…we all want the best…but we all can’t have it.” Bode replied with a smirk.
George smiled. “I won’t settle for less.”
“Are you taking up a challenge with her husband? Be wise. There are a lot of things he knows about her that you would never know.” He replied.
“I saw her eyes that day…she was sad. Something is wrong with that marriage. She is hurt.” George protested.
“And it is not your place to step in. Besides, they will fix it.” Bode replied.
George relaxed in his seat. “I am not sure I can let her go easily.”
“Dude, she is not yours. You like her, but you can’t have her. Let’s do something, why don’t you treat it like a celebrity crush? You know? I am crazy about Genevieve Nnaji, but I am quite realistic that I won’t have her…so I am not going to kill myself over what I can’t have. Treat it like that.” Bode said with a smile.
George looked away. He wasn’t sure he could treat his feelings like that…it might have been a crush initially but it was blowing out of proportion and faster than he could hold it back in. The lady he cared about was also in his reach, why would he look away?
“George, I know it’s hard to look away but when the woman is not yours, she is not yours. You are just going to keep trying but you’d never own her and even if there’s drama in that marriage, it might be resolved or it may never be…but when you have to compete with a real man that wears suits like that, you need to bring something more than your heart to the table.” Bode said and chuckled.
George frowned. “Do you know how stupid the last part of your admonition sounded?”
Bode laughed. “I am sorry, but it’s the truth. Do you even have a car?”
“Is that what love is all about?” George asked.
Bode laughed mockingly. “See this one o! Love don enter the matter? It’s over for you!”
George clenched his teeth in disappointment.
***
Doubra stared at Lola. “I am sorry.”
“Why are you sorry?” Lola asked as she typed away on her laptop.
Doubra blinked. “You have not said a word to me since we left the bar. I made you go there and I am sorry.”
Lola chuckled. “Do I look like I am five to you?”
“I know you want to think that you made that choice solely on your own because it is typical of you to think like that but I just think that if I had not made us go to the bar we wouldn’t have run into Alex.” Doubra said.
Lola closed her laptop. “One question for you, Doubra. What if we had not run into Alex at the bar? Would you be saying this?”
Doubra blinked as Lola’s question pierced her. She had really not thought about the possibility from the positivity. “Lola, are you trying to spite me?”
Lola smiled. “No, darling, I am just saying that you shouldn’t feel bad for me. I don’t feel bad for myself.”
“Alex seemed broken.” Doubra replied.
Lola stared at her. “He seemed?”
Doubra nodded. “I don’t know…I felt really bad seeing him there. He must have gone there to look for George too.”
Lola took a deep breath. “Doubra, let it rest.”
“What does your Mom think of this whole thing?” Doubra asked.
Lola sighed. “We had a long hard talk but I made myself clear to her. If he cheated on me once, maybe it could be a mistake. But these are several ladies, I can’t see it so simply. I am tired. My Mom is pissed at me and I am sure my Dad too is. They understand I am hurt, but they don’t think I should quit.” She replied as she ran her fingers through her hair. “I… am also very confused.”
“So, where do we go from here?” Doubra asked as she stared at a picture of Lola and Alex on the table.
Lola sat up. “I don’t know.”
“Do you really want the divorce?” Doubra asked.
Lola remained silent.
“You have your signature on it…it won’t take long before you get Alex mad enough to want to let you go…so, are we all in?” Doubra asked.
Lola stared at her. “Are we? Number one, I am the one married to Alex. So, the only person getting a divorce here is me.”
Doubra took a deep breath as she braced herself to hear Lola’s rant.
“Do you think I can let Alex go? Do you think I can live without him? Alex is my life. He is everything to me. My friend. My buddy. My partner. I’d take endless walks with Alex without going weary and even when I am tired, we are both in it. Alex is the only one who had given me a reason to understand how meaningless life could be alone. He gave meanings to a lot of silent things in my life. He is the only one I’d yell at and still be able to make love to…I love Alex. It is that hard to let him go. I can’t go on without Alex. I am mad at him but I don’t want to him to go.” Lola said as she tried to fight back welling tears.
Doubra swallowed painfully. Everything Lola had said to her had pierced her heart and shown her off as a bad friend. But she wasn’t bad. She just wanted her friend to be a little happier than she was. Her genius plan seemed to have worked until they ran into Alex at the bar. “I am sorry, Lola.” Doubra said.
“There is nothing to be sorry for.” Lola replied. “You tried to help me in your own way and I don’t resent you for it.” She continued and poured herself some water. “This is something I must make a decision about.”
Doubra watched her friend drink slowly. “Do you think you can ever forgive him? Maybe learn to trust him again?”
Lola stopped drinking her water and focused on Doubra.
“When he is on the phone making a business call, are you not going to be worried that it’s another woman? When he has to travel for a business meeting in Abuja, would you believe him or would you take the next flight to Abuja after him? Would you ever be able to trust him again? Because, if you decide to forget this and make your marriage work, you have to be able to trust him all over again. If you don’t think you can trust him, don’t waste your time, Lola.” Doubra said.
Lola stayed silent.
“I am going to my office, Lola. Take care of yourself. I’d check on you later.” Doubra said as she rose to her feet.
Lola waited for Doubra to shut the door before she let her tears roll down. She didn’t know if she’d be able to trust Alex again and that was indeed her greatest fear.
***
Jude passed Alex a bottle of beer. “Here you go.”
“Nah…not drinking.” Alex replied as he removed his tie.
Jude sat up. “What are we going to do?”
“I don’t know what I want to do.” Alex replied.
Jude took his seat beside Alex. “Look here, man, you have to know what you want to do. There has to be a reason why Lola was at that bar and if your guess is as good as mine, your wife was there because she was interested in George.”
“Jude.”
Jude scoffed. “Come on, man, be real. She wasn’t there because her company had become advisors to Clandestine bar overnight. She was there to do exactly the same thing we were interested in, finding out more about George.” He said. “The only difference is emotional attachment.” He added quickly.
Alex stomped his foot on the ground. “Oh God!”
“Lola went there for him.” Jude said.
Alex stared at him. “Why don’t I ask her before drawing conclusions?”
Jude groaned. “Guy, are you dumb? Your wife doesn’t owe you any explanation right now and trust me you won’t get any different answer from her than I have provided you.”
“You want me to believe you over my wife?” Alex asked calmly.
Jude smiled. “I know what you are trying to do and it won’t come out nice. I know it hurts to think that your wife might have subtle feelings for someone else and in this situation, it is not far from it, but what else could she want at Clandestine, Alex? Think. You know it. It is hard to admit, but I want you to accept it and hasten this denial phase so we can look for solutions.”
Alex sighed and picked up the bottle of beer. “I could use this now.” He said as he opened it and started to drink.
“Take it easy, man.” Jude cooed as he sipped his drink. “We just have to come up with a really good plan.”
Alex dropped his bottle. “What plan is going to be good enough for me? Lola has served me the papers already. She has probably made her move on the George guy, which means I am out of the picture.”
“Not yet, Alex. You can’t give up on her.” Jude replied and gulped his drink down. “She’s hurt but she’s yours. I don’t think you should let her go easily, besides, you were the one who said you won’t want her to play the revenge card so she doesn’t hurt herself, so, fight for her and don’t let this new guy in.” He added.
Alex stared at Jude. “Why have you stayed single?”
“Being married doesn’t change a man. It’s just a good place to show who he really is.” Jude replied. “No offence bro, but look at you.” He said and laughed. “I don’t want to be in this sort of mess that you are in when my wife finds out I have been screwing other women.”
“Why did I even let you talk me into this act?” Alex asked.
Jude smiled. “Well, scoring ladies had always been fun for us back then…and of course, we were quite stupid to let it get this far.”
“And I am more stupid knowing I am letting good love go to waste. Lola is everything.” Alex replied.
Jude sighed. “Maybe if I found myself a ‘Lola’ type of woman, I’d understand how you feel. Honestly, I don’t know how I can be so stuck up on someone.”
“Maybe if you fall in love someday, you’d understand. Till then, it would be as though I was talking gibberish to you and I don’t have the time to bring you up to speed on matters of the heart.” Alex replied.

“Why don’t you do something romantic for her? You could just show up at her office and take her home or maybe you can make her dinner or just do something special for her?” Jude probed. “There has to be something that ticks for her, right?”

Alex shrugged. “Do you think it’ll matter to her?”

“Yes, it should matter to her. Alex you have got to try harder than you already are.” Jude replied. “And if she still comes at you with the divorce papers, then maybe…just maybe it’s time to let go.”

Alex blinked. “Are you sure?”

“Alex, I am not sure. But, you have got to try.” Jude replied. “Let me see, do you guys still talk at home?”

“No. But, she makes my breakfast and dinner before leaving for work. At night, she warms my food and serves me and walks away without saying a word, if she is still awake. Otherwise, I warm my food myself.” Alex replied.

Jude smiled. “Dude, you are guys are still practically married. You haven’t lost anything.” He said with a grin.

“You are wrong. I have lost my friend and confidant. I just have a timed house mate who would leave the minute I sign the papers.” Alex replied and looked away.

Lola turned the door knob and walked into a dark living room. She reached for the light switch but the bulbs wouldn’t come on. She could have sworn that she had seen their neighbour’s front lamp on. Why didn’t they have electricity? Maybe it was his generator. She picked her steps as she turned to her right and a dim lamp beamed in the corner. She gasped as Alex’s frame stepped in from the shadows. “What did you do that for?”

“I am sorry.” He replied.

She nodded. “Have you had dinner?”

“No.” He replied.

She nodded. “I’ll go warm your meal.” She said and tried to step away. Alex took her hand. “What is it?”

“I made us dinner.” Alex said. “Come with me.” He said and led her to the dining room.

The dining table was candle lit. Lola took a deep breath as she stared at Alex. “What is this?”

“It’s time to eat.” He replied and drew her chair back. “I know you have not eaten with me in a long time, but please just sit.”

Lola blinked and took her seat. “Thank you.”

Alex took a deep breath and poured her wine. “Do I serve your soup?”

“Alex.” Lola called.

He stopped and stared at her. “Yeah?”

“I understand what you are trying to do and I…I think you are making efforts but I…I don’t know if I still want this marriage. I can’t sleep without thinking of it and it eats me up so much. We are going to have lots of issues. It’s hard for me to comprehend this whole scenery, I don’t know if I’d be able to trust you again…or love you again…or-”

“-Lola, please have dinner.” Alex said, acting unnerved by her statements.

She stared at him.

“Just eat. It’s just food. Don’t worry about my efforts. This is all about you. I am going to respect your decision. Just eat.” He replied and served the food.

He took his seat and dug his fork into his meal.

“Are you going to sign the divorce papers?” Lola asked.

Alex stared at her. “Do you want a divorce from me, Lola?” he asked.

Lola didn’t know what her next response would be. Alex didn’t look sad or worried anymore and at the same time, he didn’t see excited. He just held indifferent emotions. This seemed like another of his facades, but she didn’t know if it was worth a gamble. She stayed quiet.

“Lola?” Alex probed. “Do you want a divorce?”

Lola stared at him and then blinked. “I don’t want to talk.”

“Lola, let me know if I should start letting go…it’s going to take forever for me, so maybe you want me to start now.” Alex said.

Lola swallowed. “Do you think it is easy for me? Do you think I can just stop loving you? Do you think I want this?” she shouted.

Alex blinked. “I am sorry.”

“Too bad sorry can’t change how I feel right now.” She replied and rose to her feet. “In response to your question, Yes. Let’s break this thing up. It’s good we have no one to worry about but us.”

Alex felt the heaviness in his eyes. He raised his head to prevent any betrayal from his eyes. “Lola, what am I going to do without you?”

“I don’t know, Alex. I don’t know what I’d do either, but all I know is I don’t want to be here…I hate you so much for doing this to us, Alex.” She replied and walked away.

Alex blinked and let his tears flow.

***
It’s not every time that you have all the answers…most times, we never have most of the answers. Alex knew he was losing Lola. He had his fair share of the blame and maybe all of it, but he wasn’t going to go down without a fight. You don’t love a woman endlessly and just give up. He didn’t know if the choice he had just made was stupid but he was going to do it.

He took a deep breath and knocked on the door. He had spent the early hours of the morning driving down here and he couldn’t turn back now…even though he could be in trouble.

“Good morning, Sir.” He said as the door opened.

Mr David stared at him.

Clandestine – Episode 4

Lola stepped hard on the brakes as she avoided crashing into a tree. She took a deep breath and thanked God in a second for sparing her life. She had been driving for the past three hours with no destination in mind. She just kept driving. She wanted to run away. She wanted to escape from the pain that had engulfed her soul. Her chest ached. She was hurting. Not many people could hurt her, but when she loved, she loved like a woman, and of course, she hurt like one. A hurt woman. She took a deep breath and finally allowed her tears flow. She had held back tears for months and held on to the belief that it was all a dream. She had hoped that for one reason or the other, her twitter informant had been wrong about Alex. She wished she had stepped up to Alex the first day she got the tip, but she didn’t want to hurt him. There was every tendency that her informant could be wrong, after all, she was a popular figure and most people would take interest in her personal life…and it wouldn’t be far-fetched for some to come up with very hurting lies. This, however, had turned out to be true. She had prayed silently, loudly and sometimes, out of words just to make it all go away…but some things would always hurt you. She had spent seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and eventually months pondering on where she had gone wrong…maybe nothing did last forever. Where did those good days go?
It could be very painful when you have to console yourself, hug yourself, kiss yourself, cry with you and eventually wipe your own tears…but when you are all you have got, you have to be there for you. She finally stopped crying and opened the door. She looked down and noticed she had a flat tyre. She cursed her luck. The flat tyre must have contributed to the swerving of her car off the main road. That had to be the issue. Yes, her car tyre might have been flat, but her mind was off the road the moment she started driving. She walked over to the trunk and fetched her jack and a spare tyre and proceeded to fixing it herself. It can’t be overstated that channelling your hurt and anger into work could be pretty therapeutic. The only problem is that when that work is over, you might have nowhere to turn…but till then, exhaust yourself.
“Female mechanic?”
She turned and stared at the probably six-foot man that imposed on her frame from behind. After one glance at him, she was done. She returned to lifting the car with the jack when the stranger placed his hand on hers. She yanked out of it furiously and turned to him in one instant. “What do you want?”
He smiled at her arrogance. He was taken aback by her. She was clearly not struggling with the car but she shouldn’t have to refuse help. “I just want to help.” He said.
“Why? Are you a mechanic?” Lola retorted.
He shook his head. “No, I was just around the corner and I noticed you…I mean, you are a female and I noticed you doing this and I decided to help.”
“I don’t need your help.” She replied and bent down to remove the tyre and replace it with the spare.
“Why are you so angry?” he asked.
Lola ignored him and continued with the tyre.
He bent beside her. “You don’t have to be so angry. You could be happy.”
Lola stared at her hand. Her wedding ring was no longer there. At that moment, she did regret taking off her ring, if she had known that she would meet someone bugging her, she would have loved to have the ring with her, so she could flash it in his face and say the cliché word, “Married…” But who cared about those things these days? After all, Alex did cheat on her as a married man.
The man wasn’t going to go away. He watched her screw the nuts to the tyre with so much skill. She definitely wasn’t the average lady. “How do you know how to do this?” he asked.
She stared at him. “I drive a car. It’s common sense.” She emphasized coldly.
“You don’t have to be so rude.” He said as he slowly got up. “I was just trying to make a conversation.” He said.
She swallowed. “I am not interested.”
“Clearly.” He replied. “But you can try to be nice to people, we all have our battles.” He replied.
Lola felt bad for a second but her pain had to be more than his. She didn’t know what to say to him so she just removed the jack from the car and rolled the tyre off to the trunk. He followed her to the trunk. “So what’s your story? Did you get fired from work?” he asked with a raised eyebrow and a cheesy smile.
Lola acknowledged his effort in her heart for one reason. He had not said the cliché “Did he hurt you?” that she would have expected from most guys who had tried to take a conversation a little further. She dumped the tyre and closed the trunk and stared at him. “I have no story to tell you.” She replied and returned to the driver’s seat.
He lingered around her car door as he watched her turn the ignition and drive off.
***
Alex watched Lola as she walked into the house with her head down. “I made dinner.” He said, hoping that would be enough to stop her in tracks. He rarely cooked but when he did, Lola was in more in love with him. She didn’t stop walking, she just left for the bedroom.
Alex hurried after her. “Lola, please say something. Say anything.”
She stayed quiet as she pulled his pyjamas from the wardrobe and handed him a suit. “Goodnight.” She said.
Alex took a deep breath and walked out of the bedroom with his clothes.

The best part of surprises is that they are unexpected…anyway, that’s why they are called surprises. He was going to make this one memorable. Alex pulled up at the seaport. He stepped out of the car in a hurry and opened her door. He knew he had to beat her to that. Lola didn’t mind opening her own door. He had gone out with many ladies who had commanded him to open their door as a sign of respect to a woman and he had obliged them, but that didn’t mean he gave them the respect. Lola had earned his respect from the first day and this day he made it a point of duty to beat her to opening the door tonight. This night was different. It was the most important night of his life and he hoped and prayed that it would mean the most important night of their lives.
Lola was worried. He had hurried to open her door before she could take off her seat belts. He was acting a little more like the conventional guy and that worried her, this wasn’t Alex. Actually, it was him, but just an excited one. She took his hand as he stretched them before her and led her out of the car. “Nice spot for dinner.” She said as she stared at the ships that stood in the dark waters. “Which bank did you have to rob to afford this place?” she asked.
“It’s my life savings.” Alex replied with a grin.
Lola smiled. “That leaves you a broke man.”
“Well, you’ll marry me a broke man.”
Lola laughed. “I can’t get married to you.”
Alex’s heart stopped for a second. Was she serious? He stared at her with the fakest smile he could muster amidst his fear or rejection. This would be a wise time to turn back…and prevent an epic turn down.
With the remaining courage in him, he took her hand to the sundeck of a beautiful ship. The decorators he had contracted had done a better job than he had envisaged.
“Wow!” Lola said as she climbed up to the sundeck. “This is beautiful.” She said as she revelled in the beauty of the atmosphere. The stars in the sky did make it a more perfect scenery as they lay in their impeccable light and beauty. “I’d understand if you are broke.” She said with a smile as Alex pulled her chair backward. “Thank you.”
Alex took his seat opposite her and prayed in his heart that he’d say everything right. He had rehearsed with Jude at home and his pal had made fun of him and promised him that he’d flop while proposing to her. The waiter joined them almost immediately they settled into their seats and took their orders and then hurried away.
“What are you doing, Alex?” Lola asked.
He took a deep breath. This was his moment. “I am treating you to fine dinner. Exquisite stuff.”
She nodded with a smile. “I can see that.”
“Every girl deserves to be a princess, and you deserve all that and more.” Alex started. Lola nodded slowly with an awkward smile as he continued. “Now, most importantly, every man who aspires to be a King needs his Queen and I want to be a King…maybe not the traditional King that everyone knows, but you know what I mean and I need you by my side, Lola. I want you to make me a proud man. Forever is a long time and I want to spend it by your side.” He said.
By this time, Lola was attentive and her heart thumped faster than it ever had. It was getting serious and pretty intense.
Alex got on one knee and lifted the Tiffany box before her, “Omolola Danielle David, would you please marry me?”
Lola was stoned. Alex looked assured and at the same time scared. She could see it in his eyes. She meant everything to him. She knew it. This was real. She was home.
Lola always wondered why most ladies did shed a tear when they got proposed to, but tonight it was evident. You could either be stunned by the diamond on your ring that your eyes would hurt so much and a tear drop might fall or you could be swooned by the fact that you actually own two hearts – yours and his. And yes, tear drops rolled down her eyes. “Yes, Alex.”
“You’ll marry me?” Alex asked with his eyes popped out.
Lola nodded with a smile. “I’ll marry you over and over again, Alexander.” She said.
He slipped the ring onto her finger and pulled her close for a kiss.
***
Lola strolled into the living room. Alex stared at her. “Good morning.” She said.
“I made breakfast.” Alex replied.
Lola sighed. “Alex, you are late for work.”
“What do you care?” he asked.
“Reverse psychology won’t work on me, Alex.” She replied as she searched through the key rack for her car keys.
Alex took a deep breath. “Lola, I can’t go to work in this state. I was a mess at work yesterday and I really want us to talk about this.”
“Alex, where are my keys?” she asked.
He blinked and stayed quiet.
“Alex, give me my car keys.” She said.
“I was trying to talk to you yesterday and you just walked out on me, you can’t do that to me today.” He replied.
Lola sighed. “Alex, I just want you to sign my divorce papers. Is that too much to ask?”
He nodded. “It is too much to ask, Lola. I am not giving up on us.”
“There is no us, Alex.” She shouted through clenched teeth. “You threw it all away and I want to be in peace. Can I at least have that?” she asked.
Alex walked up to her and knelt down. “Lola, please give me a chance to fight for us. Please. I am sorry.”
“I don’t know.” Lola replied as she looked away.
He blinked. “Tomorrow is Thursday, I want to take you to Clandestine.”
Lola stared at him. She loved that bar. It held a lot of special memories for her.
Alex took her hand. “Lola, please. Tomorrow night. I’ll come home from work and I’ll take you there.”
“No.” she replied.
He blinked.
“If I’ll come. I’ll meet you there.” She replied.
He nodded. “That’s fine by me.” He replied.
“Can I have my keys?” she asked.
He pulled out the keys from his pocket and gave them to her. “Lola, I am sorry.”
“Don’t apologize to me anymore, Alex. I am tired of hearing it.” She said amidst the tears she tried to hold back. “You-don’t-hurt-those-you-love.” Alex took her hand. She said as tears rolled down her eyes and she hurried out of the house.
***
“What’s up, bro?” Jude asked as he walked into Alex’s office.
Alex ignored Jude as he focused on his laptop.
“Come on, man. I already said I was sorry.” Jude said with a smile. “Guy, you enjoyed this thing o! I don’t know why you dey vex for me!”
Alex remained silent.
“Okay. Any luck with her?”
Alex closed the laptop. “What do you want?”
“Alex, you are my guy. Why you dey do like this na? Because of a woman?”
Alex took a deep breath. “Lola is my wife. Lola is my life. Get it!”
Jude nodded. “But why hasn’t she forgiven you? I mean…this hot love you guys have…she should have forgiven you by now.”
“Get out of my office.” Alex replied.
Jude sighed. “Look man, I am saying it so spite you or her, I am just being honest. This is why I never got married, I can’t be tied down.”
“You can’t be responsible. That’s your issue.” Alex replied and walked over to the door.
Jude chuckled. “And you are the responsible guy? Dude, as a married man, you have scored well.”
“You might leave now. I have work to do.” Alex said.
Jude remained on his seat. “I am not going anywhere. Sit down and let’s talk about this.” He said in defiance.
Alex clenched his teeth and shut the door.
“Bro, you have got to stop acting like this with me. I am doing everything I can to support you.”
“Maybe I don’t need your support anymore. You have done me more harm than good.” Alex said.
Jude turned in his direction. “Alex, I want you to get back with your wife. I also want you to understand that you have some fault in this matter.”
“I understand. But, if I want to thread on the right path, some things have to change from now…and you are one of them.”
Jude sighed. “So you are cutting me off? Just like that?”
“I haven’t said anything yet…but it is a possibility.” Alex replied. “I don’t want to ever stray again.”
“Address your own personal issues.” Jude replied as he rose to his feet.
The door opened and Mr Idahosa walked in. “There is a good chance for you to redeem your image and that of this bank, Mr Alex. I got us into an impromptu pitch and it starts in two hours.” He started. “This is your opportunity, if you mess it up, you are out!” he added. He then turned to Jude. “Prepare the pitch book. We don’t have time to waste. Let’s go make this money.” He added.
Alex pulled his sleeves back to check the time as Mr Idahosa made his exit from the office.
Jude turned towards him. “You can’t get rid of me easily, bro. We have to work this pitch together.” He said and walked out of the office.
Alex took a deep breath and returned to his chair.

Doubra joined Lola at her desk as she walked into her office. “Hey! You missed lunch, where were you?”
Lola stared at Doubra’s empty hand. “Did you get me anything from lunch?”
“Actually, no.” Doubra replied.
Lola shrugged. “See…it doesn’t matter.”
Doubra sighed. “Are you trying to guilt trip me? It’s not working.”
Lola smiled. “I had to finish some work so I decided to skip lunch.”
“Hmm…I see. Anyway, I have a question. I hope it doesn’t sound spooky.” Doubra started as she pulled a seat. “Where is your wedding ring?”
Lola relaxed in her chair. “I am not wearing it.”
“Lola, I am your friend, right? Why don’t you tell me what’s going on? You can’t keep bottling everything up and expecting answers to come for you.”
Lola smiled faintly. “Doubra, you are exaggerating the matter. This is just me not wearing my ring.”
“Newly wedded females don’t just not wear their wedding rings for two days consecutively.” Her friend replied with a smile. “Whenever you are ready to talk, you can talk to me.” She added and picked up a file from the table. “This is the file for the case we are working on, right?”
Lola nodded. “Yes.”
Doubra flipped through the file briskly. “Alright then. I’ll complete my own part in it, and I advise that you talk to me when you are ready to.”
Lola smiled. “I am fine, Doubra.”
“No one is ever really fine.” She replied.
Lola sat up. “Doubra, I am fine.”
“Whatever makes you happy.” She replied. “How’s Alex?”
Lola stared at her. “Alex is okay.”
“Good. You guys look good together.” She replied and walked out.

THURSDAY NIGHT
Alex stared at his wristwatch as sipped his drink. Lola had told him that she might come and he hoped that she would. It wasn’t time for music yet and so he was still optimistic that she’d show up before the music performances started.
He kept turning his head over at the  opening of the main door to disappointments and sighs…maybe she wasn’t coming after all. But then, he was still optimistic. He dialled Lola’s phone but it kept going into her voice mail. It was time to leave, but he had made up his mind that he was going to stay till the end…if she showed up, fine. If she didn’t, he knew he deserved the treatments he had been receiving from her lately.
He took off his jacket and relaxed as the moderator announced that the musicals would start in the next couple of minutes. He would try to listen to the sound today and maybe he’d see what actually fascinated Lola in listening to music. He listened to songs, but she was astute with them. She knew how to listen.
“Hi.”
Lola came. Alex almost sprang to his feet to receive her. “Hi. Hi. Erm…you came.” He said with a smile.
Lola smiled faintly as she took her seat. “Sorry I kept you late.”
“It’s fine…it’s fine. They are just about to start the first song. Fruit punch is good, right?” he asked.
She nodded.
Alex hurried to get the punch almost immediately and returned to her in a flash. “Here you go.” He said as he placed the glass on the table.
“Thank you.” Lola said.
He smiled. He was making progress.
“My name is George. This song is titled “SHE”. I ran into this gorgeous lady some days ago while she fixed her car tyre and she totally inspired this song in my heart. I have not seen her since then, but, I’ll always have this song for her.” The vocalist said and then strung his guitar.
Lola lifted her head to the podium. She knew him. He was the guy she was rude to while changing her tyre some days ago. Lola focused her gaze on him as he sang with so much depth and passion. Everything he said could be traced to her. Her eyes. Her sorrow. Her pain. All what he had perceived from a distance, he had carefully scripted it into words and into a song. It was beautiful.
Alex stared at Lola. She was lost. She was obviously happy where she was. Maybe he could bring her here every day and maybe that would make her happier and just forgive him. Just maybe.
Finally George stopped singing and smiled. “She is here.” He said as he stared at Lola.
The audience cheered…except Lola.
Alex stared at Lola. “Lola?” No response. He stared at her eyes which were fixed on George. He then turned towards him. George was smiling. He was smiling at Lola and Alex knew it.
Lola was SHE.

Clandestine – Episode 3

EPISODE 3

Alex flipped through the divorce papers. Lola wasn’t kidding. They were authentic, duly stamped by a notary stamp. She wasn’t even asking for anything. She just ‘wanted out’. Alex wiped some perspiration off his forehead. He grabbed the documents and hurried upstairs to their bedroom.
She was not in the room. His heart skipped a beat. (Did she disappear?) He knew she had gone upstairs, so where could she be?
“Lola!” he shouted. No response. He pondered for a moment in his heart and then he turned towards the bathroom and for the first time, he heard the shower sound. He took a deep breath and sat on the bed as he waited for her. The divorce papers were not going to deter him from apologizing to his wife. She had to find somewhere in heart to take him back.
Lola stepped out of the bathroom into the room with her towel tied to her chest. Alex swallowed as he fed his eyes on her body. She was still as alluring as the first day he set his eyes on her. ‘What did he even see in the women?’ he thought as he kept his gaze on her.
“What are you doing, Alex?” Lola asked.
Alex blinked as he stretched the divorce papers before her. “I won’t sign them.”
“Why not?” she asked. “I am done with this marriage.”
Alex was roused. “You can’t walk around this room in that body and say you are done with this marriage.”
Lola sighed as she stepped away from him. “Talk is cheap.”
“Babe, please.” Alex said as he got on his knees before her.
She took her seat on the bed. “I already told my parents. I am moving out.”
“Lola?”
She nodded. “I can’t look at you anymore.”
Lola watched Alex’s eyes prey all over her body and his hands moved slowly to her legs. She had him where she wanted him. Tears streamed down her eyes as she stared at Alex. He lifted a finger to stop the tears from falling. Her heart raced fast as she watched him pull the towel slightly off her body. Alex was getting too close for comfort yet she couldn’t let him go.
Alex stared at her. Her eyes didn’t mean exactly what she said. Lola’s eyes gave her away at this moment…or was he picking the wrong signals? She wanted him. He could see it. Why was she saying she couldn’t look at him anymore when all he could see was the timid look of his wife on their wedding night? His heart beat fast as he moved closer to her. She didn’t draw away. She just stared at him. “I’m sorry.” He whispered.
Lola closed her eyes. She forgot her fears, her hurt and pain and let Alex make love to her.
***
Alex stopped by a flower shop to pick up some flowers as he planned to meet Lola at a nearby coffee shop on the island. He knew she wasn’t the lady that would be buoyed by flowers, but then every woman is still a girl at heart and needs her prince, so he was going to be that. They had been together for quite some months and everything seemed to be going just fine for them. Lola’s career bloomed and his did same. Thoughts of getting married had crossed his mind but he wasn’t sure if Lola would want to be with him…just yet. Her life was just starting and he was ready to settle down. Lola was his choice and he wasn’t going to settle for another woman in his life. He was prepared to wait till whenever she would be ready.
Lola stared at her wristwatch as she waited for Alex. She had postponed her meeting with some clients to meet up with him and he was running late. She loved her job so much and it paid her well financially too. The clients she had put off for a later time were crucial to her firm, but she knew where her priorities did lie. It was with Alex. How he had crept into her heart and won her over was still like a mystery to her. She had vowed to break her own heart before anyone could after her last relationship, but with Alex, it just came easily. This time, she wasn’t going to give Alex a chance to hurt her, instead she was going to make sure they had something special. She was never the lady to give priorities to what could come secondary but she had learned not to back-pedal someone who cared about her.
Her last boyfriend would have been the ‘man of her dream’. Technically, every man that a lady ‘falls in love’ with turns out to be the man of her dream until there is just one man to complement that status and bring her own fairy tale to reality. It didn’t have to be the Cinderella story but it had to be their own story and with Alex, she was ready to join him in writing their own love story.
“Hey, beautiful.” Alex said as he stretched the flowers before her, interrupting her deep moment.
She smiled faintly as she stared at him. She took one glance at the flowers and then the other at him. “I don’t like flowers.” She said.
He nodded. “I know, but I am going to keep bringing them until you love them.” He then took his seat. “What are we having for lunch?”
“I don’t know. This is a coffee shop, they don’t serve main courses here.” She replied.
Alex frowned. “Then why did you let me choose this spot?”
Lola chuckled. “I am not responsible for your choices.”
“You are. Everything I do is for you.” He replied.
She smiled. “Then we have a serious problem.” She said with a perky smile.
“How so?” he asked as he took her hand from across the table.
She withdrew them in an instant. “Do you have to hold my hand to show you are in love?”
Alex smiled. “You need some romance in your life, Lola.”
“It means you are doing poorly for a lover then.” She replied with a girly smile.
He stared at her smile. He was sure he knew where his heart was. Every little thing she said or did looked like the big things to him. You know when someone you love just knows how to do and say all the right things or even knows how to make everything that feels wrong right? That’s special. Lola intimidated him, but she also possessed the heart that swallowed up his fears.
Lola was happy to love the right man. She wanted this to be forever. Alex’s charms and wits made him a charmer to any lady, but he was with her now…and that meant something. It meant everything. She couldn’t be sure of everything but she wasn’t seeking answers when no questions were posed at her. She was in love with Alex and yes, it was a beautiful feeling. Just thinking about something he says and finding all the right reasons to smile is a beautiful feeling.
“I love you, Lola.” Alex said. There he said it! After battling with the forces in his mind and with Jude constantly warning him against ‘letting a lady know you have gone rails for her’. He had said the most important word to her and she just sat there…silent. He was going to ask her to say something or even anything when she said;
“…and I love you, Alex Ojo.” Lola said with a smile.
And it was true…

Mr Idahosa was livid and with all the right reasons too. His best pitcher wasn’t at work. He had rung Alex’s phone to no avail and Jude had been trying for about an hour now and he was still nowhere to be found.
Jude stood before their boss trying to find all the logical explanations for why Alex’s return to work was taking forever. “Sir, I believe there is a tangible reason for this.”
“Tangible? Our clients are tangible! They are the ones with the substance. How am I going to make my millions if Alex is not here?” Mr Idahosa barked.
“Sir, I want to believe that maybe the traffic held him up.” Jude replied.
Mr Idahosa growled. “Traffic? At this time of the day? You must think I am an idiot! Did he tell you he was going somewhere else?”
Jude shook his head. “Sir, he went home to get a change of clothes. That’s all.”
“Why did he show up late this morning? Why did he have to go home for a change of clothes? Didn’t he sleep in his house last night?” Mr Idahosa blurted angrily. In all honesty, Alex’s personal life had never mattered to him, but his money mattered so much to him. Alex was key to almost all the funds that came into the bank. He owned the game…and he owned his boss too. Mr Idahosa knew better than to threaten his best man with a sack or it would delight their competitors to latch on to Alex. But that wasn’t enough reason for Alex to take him for granted. Actually it was…Alex literally had him by the balls in the bank.
Jude stared at his boss with some defiance. Between himself and Alex, they called him ‘fatso’ or ‘doughnut’. He was on the big side. Mr Idahosa enjoyed his role as President and played it out to the letter. He wasn’t half as good as his best employees hence he was at their mercy. Jude watched him as he lifted the receiver of the intercom and dished out orders to his secretary to get more cookies and tea for the clients.
Mr Idahosa rose to his feet and stared hard at Jude. “I am going to try to stall our clients for another hour and pray that Alex gets here before they move to the bank down the road!” he said. “And Alex had better not make me miss my lunch today.” He added as he stormed out of the office angrily.
Jude struggled with his phone’s screen as he tapped Alex’s number. The phone just buzzed again with no response. Then he dialled Lola’s phone.

“Bro, you are really serious about getting married?” Jude asked as he watched Alex adjust his jacket.
Alex ignored him.
“Think about it, man. Is she putting pressure on you?” Jude asked.
Alex sighed as he picked the tiffany box from the table and put it into his jacket. “Dude, did you see her put a gun to my head asking me to marry her? I am the one shivering just in case she doesn’t want to marry me.”
“Hey, she might have put a mental gun to your head! Besides, who won’t want to be tied down to you? You are young, rich and successful!” Jude said.
Alex snapped. “She is younger, smarter, rich…maybe not richer and also successful! Who won’t want to marry her?”
Jude smiled. “I am just trying not to lose my best buddy to forever.”
“I am proposing to her tonight. I pray she says yes to me. I want to be with her.” Alex replied. “How is my tie? Should I wear a blue tie? I am kind of nervous about black.”
Jude tossed a blue tie to him. “So, are you ready for this? If she says yes to you, bro, you do know what that means, right?”
Alex blinked. “I am ready for this. Stop talking, Jude.” He replied.

Mr and Mrs David watched their daughter descend the staircase with beaming smiles on their faces.
“She is so delicate.” Her father whispered into his wife’s ears. “We should tell her.” He added with a soft chuckle.
“Don’t ruin the surprise.” His wife said through clenched teeth as Lola drew close to them.
Her father smiled as Lola stood before them with a smile. “Do I look good?”
“As beautiful as always, darling.” Her father replied.
Lola smiled and turned to her mother. “What do you have to say?”
“Your Father has already ‘hyped’ you. Does mine matter?” she asked with a faint smile.
“I am not leaving this place without you telling me how much you love me.” Lola said.
Mrs David smiled. “Of course, darling, I love you and you look very beautiful.”
“Have a good evening, my dear.” Her Father said as he walked her to the door.
Lola smiled. “Thank you, Sir.”
“Take care of yourself.” Her mom added.
Lola blew them kisses and hurried out to meet Alex by his car. “Sorry I kept you waiting.”
Alex stared at her.
“What is it?” she asked, slightly put off by his look.
He took a deep breath. “You are gorgeous, Lola.”
“Thank you.” She replied.
He turned the ignition and drove off.
***
Alex smiled as he heard the shower rush. All seemed to be fine between himself and Lola now…at least, they were just intimate and it was filled with passion, so, they had to be fine. He couldn’t feel totally at peace as Lola had left the bed without a word and gone straight into the bathroom, but still, he was going to stay optimistic.

BUZZ!!! Lola’s phone rang from the side table. He reached out to it and saw Jude on the caller ID. He shrieked. He had completely put the important meeting at work behind him to solve his family issues. He jumped out of bed and picked his clothes from the floor in a hurry.
Lola stepped out of the shower and stared at him as he started to dress up.
“Babe, we have a meeting at work. I am going to hear it hot from my boss once I get there.” He said as he tugged into his pants.
Lola stayed silent.
“We should do something fun for dinner.” Alex continued. “Maybe order in shawarma or pizza rather than have you do the cooking.”
Lola stayed silent.
“Babe?” he called as he adjusted his jacket. “Why are you not saying anything? Are we not cool?”
Lola smiled faintly. “Cool?”
He nodded. “I know I have messed up big time and I am really sorry, Lola. I swear, it’s never going to happen again.”
“Really? This is not your first case of infidelity, Alex. I’d be stupid to believe you.” She replied and started to slip into her clothes.
Alex swallowed. “What just happened between us?”
“Revenge.” She replied coldly.
He stared at her with some concern. “Revenge?”
“Honey, if you want to have revenge sex, you cheat on your husband. It doesn’t work this way.” he added.
Lola scoffed. “Apparently, there seems to be a rule of how things apply to you, right?”
“I didn’t mean it that way, but all I am saying is-”
Lola cut in, “-Forget it, Alex. We are done.”
“Done?”
“There is nothing here anymore.” She replied. “What just happened between us was casual and meaningless. It is exactly what goes on between you and your whores.”
Alex couldn’t believe what he had just heard. “Lola, I don’t love any of them!” he screamed.
“Exactly my point. I just needed to validate myself with you.” She said as she attempted to leave the room.
Alex pulled her hand back. “Lola, I don’t know what game you think you are playing with me but this is not going to work, you don’t stop loving someone in one day, you don’t do this.”
“You don’t get to tell me what to do and what not to do, Alex Ojo.” She replied. “I have loved you, respected you, done everything right. And what do you do to me? You make fun of me and my love by sleeping around.”
Alex clasped his hands on his head. “I am sorry.”
“Why did you do it?” Lola shouted. “Give me a reason. Please. What did I do?” She asked as tears rolled down her eyes.
He swallowed painfully. “You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“I know. I just wanted to hear it from you.” She replied. “Goodbye, Alex.” She said and walked out of the room.
Alex caught his breath and then slipped down the bed.
***
Jude opened the door to the bedroom and saw Alex sprawled on the floor. “Hey!” No response. Jude hurried over to him and pulled him up. “What are you doing on the floor?”
Alex’s eyes were red.
“Where is Lola?” Jude asked.
Alex took a deep breath. “Gone.”
“What do you mean by gone?” Jude asked.
Alex clenched his teeth. “She is divorcing me.”
“Excuse me?”
“She is leaving me!” Alex yelled.
Jude took a deep breath. “What happened?”
“She found out.” Alex replied.
Jude stared at him. “About what?”
Alex groaned. “She found out about those women!”
Jude took a deep breath. “Chill bro, a woman doesn’t really know these things except if you admit it to her. Okay? Right now, you are going to pull yourself together, we would go and finish the business deal which Mr Idahosa is about to have your head for, and when you are back, you would find something to tell her, okay?” he asked.
Alex stayed silent.
Jude sighed and offered him a hand. “Come on, let me help you up.”
Alex took the hand and pushed Jude into a chair as he pummelled him with two strikes on the face.
Jude groaned as he fought back pushing Alex into the wall. “Chill out!”
“My life is over!” Alex shouted. “It’s all because of you!”
Jude wiped some blood from his mouth, “Calm down. You can’t blame me for everything. You enjoyed it too.”
“I want my wife back.” Alex said.
Jude rubbed his forehead and took a seat. “What are we going to do?”
“Are you asking me? I want you to give me an answer!” Alex shouted and then took a seat.
“Alex, you have got to get a grip. You are in trouble already, a solution out of this is what we need to find.” Jude replied. “Hmmm…why don’t you buy her a necklace?”
Alex hissed. “Does she look like she is hungry to you?”
“You know, I think this is the real problem in your marriage. Lola is almost perfect at anything that you seek other women to make you feel perfect too.” Jude replied.
Alex sighed. “Are you making excuses for me?”
“No. I am just stating the obvious.” He replied.
Alex ignored him.
“There has to be something you can do for her. Maybe buy her a car.” Jude said.
Alex remained silent.
“A piece of land? A boutique? Hmm…I know it! Shopping spree in any country of her choice.” Jude said as his face lit up. “She is going to love it.”
“Clandestine”. Alex said in a low tone.
Jude stared at him. “I was right, unh? Shopping spree!”
“Clandestine.” Alex said with a smile. “I am going to take her to Clandestine on Thursday night.”
“Clandestine Bar?” Jude asked.
Alex nodded with a smile. “I am going to reignite our lost passion.”
“What’s so special about the bar?” Jude asked.
Alex took a deep breath. “That’s where it all began.”

Lola rose to her feet as Alex stood cold by the door. “Welcome, Alex.”
“Err…Why are you not at work?” he asked with a rueful smile. He hoped that would melt his wife’s heart. It always did. It’s not easy to be a ‘fine’ boy!
Lola smiled back. “Would it be right for me to go to work when my husband didn’t return from watching a football game last night? A Sunday night?”
Alex cleared his throat and motioned towards a chair. “The game was very painful, we lost and I drank so much and ended up at Jude’s.”
“Oh, Jude?!” she cooed with a smile. “You can do better, Alex. Jude isn’t gay.”
Alex blinked. “Gay?”
“Who is she?” Lola asked.
Alex’s heart skipped a beat. His wife had never confronted him about another female. He swallowed as he processed a thought…‘Lola must have seen too many TV dramas and decided to try the normal accusation style to put him in a precarious position and force him to confess’. That must be it! He smiled in his heart. He wouldn’t be buoyed by that.
“Who is she?” Lola asked again.
Alex sighed. “Women! Babe, you know I love you.”
“I know…but I know you are also a cheating whore.”
He swallowed. “Lola?”
“Alex Ojo, who are you sleeping with? Or…let me make it easier for you, who are the other women in your life?”
Alex’s heart raced fast. He knew he had to do something to get away from this situation and the easiest way was to walk away. “Lola, I don’t have the time for this, I just came home to freshen up and return to work.” He said as he started to walk away.
Lola nodded. “I already ironed your blue shirt.”
“Thank you.” He replied and hurried upstairs.
Lola took a deep breath as she stared at the clock.

Jude dropped Alex’s phone on his bed. “So, you are having a date with the famous Lola David. We should put this ‘shii’ on twitter and when you take a picture with her, drop it on Instagram.”
Alex brushed his hair. “Do I look like a teenager to you?”
“Bro, this is legendary…and from your BBM, she is fine too. Why doesn’t she use her picture on her social media?” Jude asked.
Alex shrugged.
“I think you should ask her.” Jude replied. “I would like to know why she leaves people guessing when she is this fine.”
Alex stared at him. “Do you think that I would ask her that?”
“There’s nothing wrong with that. By the way, how old is she? Has she told you? Maybe she is one of those babes that is hunting for husbands?”
Alex sighed. “Lola David is twenty-two.”
“Na lie! And she dey always tweet like some wise woman.” Jude retorted.
Alex shook his head. “Wisdom has nothing to do with age. I mean just look at you, you are an example.”
“Your Father!” Jude yelled as Alex chuckled.
Alex took a deep breath. “I like her.”
“Everyone likes her.” Jude replied as he picked Alex’s phone. “I should transfer her picture to my phone.”
Alex yanked the phone from him. “What are you trying to do?”
“I just want to have a picture of her.” Jude replied.
“And I refuse.” Alex said as he picked his car key. “Jude, I don’t want anything about this on twitter or anywhere else.”
Jude chuckled. “I won’t do what you won’t do.”
Alex smiled and walked out.
***
Lola was nervous about her first date with Alex. It was not like she had not been on dates before, but she actually did like this guy. Was that a strange thing? No. It felt like a good thing and that scared her. Alex did not only have the good looks and smooth talks, he did have the good brains too. She took occasional glances at her wristwatch as she looked ahead at the traffic that was slowly building on the mainland. Lagos and people! Her teeming population of people flooded the city irrespective of the day of the week…it would be wrong to guess that you could avoid traffic in the city on a particular day of the week. She didn’t want Alex to arrive at their proposed venue before her, she wanted to beat him to it, that way, she’d have something to ride on throughout their date.
As she went through the date in her mind, her phone buzzed. It was Alex. ‘God, please don’t let him say he is at the place.’ She said as she picked her phone. “Hello.”
“Apparently I possess the virtue of making it early to meetings.” He cooed from the other end of the line.
Lola’s face fell. God hadn’t granted her request. Alex had gotten to the venue before her and now she’d have to swallow humble pie on that part. “Don’t flatter yourself, young man. I am five minutes from you.” She replied.
“Oh, really? That means you are somewhere around my house because I am just stepping into my car.” Alex replied from the other end of the line.
Lola hit her head and a smile lurked round her face. She had just given herself away to an Alex that was still at home. She didn’t know how, but he made her smile effortlessly. It had to be something special. He was everything and more that she hoped for. He had won her over even without trying. Knowing how fickle her heart had fallen to him, she knew she had to wield it. She cut the call without saying another word. “Drive faster.” She said to the Taxi driver as the road started to open up for them.
***
Alex stared at Lola from across the table with a smile. She was different from most girls that he had been with, but his aim was still the same, he would not mind to score extra points with her. “So, are you going to tell me about him?”
Lola chuckled. “Him? You really are just like the other guys.” She said as she sipped her drink.
“How so?” he asked as he poured himself a drink.
Lola was doing her best to act as though Alex didn’t matter much to her and he was just another friend…so far, she felt she had fared decently and her responses to his questions would also go a long way to prove that she was immune to his charms…but who was she kidding? She was smitten!
“You still haven’t answered my question.” Alex said as he dug his fork into the food. “How am I like the other guys? Because I asked about him?”
“I know you want to go out with me, but asking about ‘Him’ is just a sleazy way of going about it.” She replied.
Alex laughed. “You are so full of yourself, Lola. I don’t want to go out with you.” He replied. “You must really think high of yourself and I think it’s cool.”
“I think you are being evasive of the truth.” She replied.
He nodded. “Maybe I would like to be your boyfriend someday, but the fact that you have mentioned it before I have even given it a thought must suggest that you have it in mind also.”
“I just know men.” She replied as she ate.
“My darling, you don’t know men, you only know some things about men.” He replied.
Lola felt some heat flush across her face. She wasn’t particularly the lady that knew how to be wrong, she was always on the right side, but Alex was right with his deduction. She must have jumped the gun too early…and now, she needed to do what was necessary of every ‘humble’ person. “You are right about that. I guess I just know some things about men.”
Alex smiled at this. “Now that we have gotten that out of the way, tell me about him.”
“What is there to know?” she asked.
“You have always been evasive of it, there has to be something to know.” He replied.
She shrugged. “We are no longer together. I guess that sums it up.”
“Why? If I am going to be with you, I’d like to make it work. I won’t want to make the same mistakes that he did.” Alex said with a smile.
Lola laughed. “We are back to where we started then.”
“Did he meet you at Clandestine Bar?” Alex asked.
“No.”
Alex smiled. “That’s a good sign for me then.”
“How?” she asked.
“The Clandestine Bar happens to be your best place and meeting a guy you like there can only mean this is real.” He replied.
Lola laughed. “Why do you think I like you?”
“Don’t you?” he asked with a raised eyebrow. Alex knew how to accentuate his looks and his full eyebrows worked for him too. He added a corny smile to it. “This is your last chance to ask me out, Lola.”
That got Lola laughing. Actually, almost anything he said or did could get her to smile or laugh. She loved him.
***
There are a lot of things that come with being married. One of them for Lola was cutting down her frequency to the Clandestine Bar. Alex wasn’t a fan of music and so, he tried to accompany her to the bar twice a month and after a while, he got pretty bored of it all. Lola tried to sustain her passion for it, but then, there are some things that could always be put aside. From twice a month to once a month, and now, she hadn’t been to the bar in about three months. She missed that bar!
Lola stared hard at the paper in her hand. Somewhere in her mind, she had hoped that Alex was nothing like the man she had found him out to be in the last couple of months. Her phone vibrated. Her boss had been calling her to know why she hadn’t reported for work in almost a week.
Lola had spent the last three months of her marriage trying to understand why Alex was unfaithful to her. She had loved him in the best way that any woman could but all she had been rewarded with was his infidelity. How did she know this? Lagos is quite a big city but when you are popular on the internet, your life becomes pretty constricted…and possibly you automatically become a ‘celebrity’. Lola had not asked for all these, but her voice had echoed more than she expected.
She had received a message from one of her friends via Twitter indicating that her husband was quite the promiscuous type. She immediately dismissed the accusations and tried not to bring it up with Alex to avoid any scuffle with him. He once mentioned to her about how ‘social media would kill your relationship’ when they had some tension during their courtship. She was not one to talk about her personal life but Alex still felt that her popularity might draw some attention to them. She had desisted from frequent visits to her accounts but with the incessant messaging from this particular contact of hers, she decided to do a little investigating of the matter.
It is often said that ‘you shouldn’t go seeking answers if you can’t stand the outcome’. Lola was not finding the outcome of her findings very easy, but there are a number of things that we just learn to deal with.
***
Alex spent more time in the bathroom than he usually would. He knew time was racing against him as he had to return to work, but he was also concerned about his wife’s first direct accusation of his infidelity. Could Jude have mentioned it to her? He knew his friend would not dare to do such to him. He believed that it must be the usual ‘feminine instinct’ and in that case, he had to thread carefully. Why was he even a cheat? He thought to himself. Honestly, it was just fun for him to still be able to shag around and have a wife. Being a married man didn’t have to change everything. He loved his wife, but ‘call girls’ could be fun and spontaneous. Lola was tender and he respected her for it, but he loved the adventures that came with his promiscuous life.
He got out of the shower and started to prepare for work. He needed to find a way to get Lola’s mind off her accusations so as not to aggravate any issues between them. He knew what he must do not to hurt his marriage to Lola. He had to cut off all ties with those women and try to let go of his dirty ways.

“Are you serious about settling down with her?” Jude asked as he handed Alex a bottle of beer.
Alex nodded. “I am in love with her.”
Jude sighed. “Man, I don’t know about this o…you know how it is over here, single…no boundaries, free as a bird…basically-”
“-irresponsible!” Alex cut in.
Jude smiled. “Are we actually irresponsible? We take care of our parents and family.”
“That’s a duty.” Alex replied as he sipped his drink.
Jude cleared his throat.  “When was the last time I took a bottle of beer at your place?”
“I…erm…”
“Exactly!” Jude said cutting in. “Lola doesn’t like all that, therefore, you have stopped having them. I haven’t seen beer in your house in a while now…and you hardly even take it anymore. You are losing your freedom to her.” He replied.
Alex shrugged. “Maybe she is worth it.”
“No woman is worth it, brother. Remember Brenda, I thought she was my life and look at how she dumped me.”
Alex sighed. “I think I am in love.”
“You are just twenty-seven, you still have a few more years ahead of you before you settle down.” Jude said. “Lola is quite young too, I know she has attained quite a lot for her age and to be honest it baffles me that she is so good in this generation, but man, don’t be tied down to that.” He concluded.
Alex dropped the bottle of beer. “Jude, I don’t want to lose her.”
“I don’t think you will. You guys have been together for some months now, she is into you. So, you can take advantage of that to stall things for quite some time. Live your life to the fullest, you can’t be stuck with one lady…you are not a sissy. Get all the girls you can!” Jude added.
Alex chuckled. “I don’t know how you managed to graduate with a First Class with that dead brain of yours. All you think of is women.”
“Bro, you also made a first class and you aren’t any better.” Jude sneered. “Besides, I would be better than you in this game if I had the looks you have.”
Alex relaxed in his chair and scrolled through his phone’s gallery and then fixed his gaze on Lola’s picture. He didn’t know if Jude was right about him stalling things with Lola. He knew he wanted to settle down someday, not because of his mother who had not stopped singing to him about a young successful man needing a woman by his side, but because he wanted to have a woman to call his own someday. Maybe he felt possessive or selfish or had all the wrong reasons, but he knew that Lola did fit the description of the woman he’d want to call his wife. Beautiful, Intelligent, Smart and Successful…and most importantly, she was the only lady that had his heart. Why would he not want to be with her before doubts set in for her?
“Are you staring at her picture?” Jude asked, jolting Alex out of his thoughts.
Alex nodded. “Yeah.”
“It’s over for you, bro.” Jude replied with a grin. “
***
Lola wasn’t sure if she had done the right thing, but when something didn’t feel right anymore, maybe it actually wasn’t right. She didn’t understand why Alex would choose to hurt her with infidelity. He made her feel like a fool by claiming to be in love with her, but by not giving her his all. That couldn’t be love.
Alex walked into the living room. “Do you want me to drop you on my way?” he asked.
Lola stared at him. “Are you not running late for work?”
“I am…but I just want to help you.” He replied.
“Why?” she asked.
He sighed. “Lola, I am not in the mood for all these. If you don’t want my help, no problem. I have a very important meeting soon, so, I’ll see you in the evening.”
“Won’t you be visiting her this evening?” Lola asked.
Alex scoffed. “There is no one but you, Lola. Stop being dramatic. My team lost yesterday and I was really sad about it, so, I stayed back with Jude, that’s all. If you don’t believe me, ask him. If you don’t believe him, then too bad.”
Lola swallowed. “Am I really that shallow to you?”
“Excuse me?”
She stood up. “You must think you married a fool, right?”
“Lola, get a grip. I am not sure I have the time for all these now, and I don’t like you building assumptions and hurting yourself with things that are not.” He said and approached the door.
“Where were you last night, Alex?” she asked.
Alex sighed and opened the door. “At Jude’s place.”
“Tricia.”
Alex stopped and turned as he stared at Lola. “Excuse me?”
“You were with Tricia last night.” Lola said as she took a seat and picked up a paper from the table. “And last week when you claimed to be on a business conference, it was Jennifer…and there is also a Bola in your life…and even “Dirty”. Dirty. You slept with a lady who calls herself Dirty. That’s…that’s just disgusting.”
Alex’s breath stopped for a minute. He turned to Lola. How did she get those names? Or did she just conjure them? He blinked and walked into the room slowly. “I…I-”
“It’s okay. I have spent months visiting brothels, motels, and clubs tailing you, finding out information from people and humiliating myself by mingling with call girls just to get names. That can be pretty low, you know? It is really low.”
“Lola…” he said as he stood before her. Her eyes told no emotion. She had no tears in them, she just stared at him. That’s not the type of woman you want to see as a man when you have just been accused of infidelity. You’d rather see a woman with tears in her eyes, which might give you some hope of a fight from her. Lola just stared at him. She was done.
She took a deep breath. “Alex, I am exhausted.”
“I am sorry, Lola”
She shrugged. “It’s okay, Alex.”
“Is it?” he asked.
She nodded and picked an envelope. She pulled out a file from it and handed it to him. “Those are our divorce papers, please sign them, Alexander.” She said and walked into the house.
