In The Shadows 17 – Greg Emuze

Hey” Zaneta heard Alice’s voice.

She looked up to find her friend smiling knowingly at her from the door.

“Thought you left immediately” Zaneta said.

“I did, came back for my slippers. Can’t do an extra minute in these heels” Alice replied.

“Pele” Zaneta said, not laughing like Alice had expected.

“Saw Zach driving out” Alice said

Zaneta said nothing.

“You guys resolved?”

Again Zaneta didn’t reply.

Alice sighed, walked into the office and took a seat.

“Pray, tell me, why are you so mad at him?”

“I don’t know, Alice” she said, rubbing her temples.

“Babe, you need to manage your expectations. Has this ever happened? I mean, according to you he has always been available when he said he would. Believe me, in today’s world, that’s a lot” Alice said trying to reason with her younger friend.

“Yeah” Zaneta replied.

“I think I know what’s wrong”

“What?” Zaneta asked smiling.

“You have fallen in love with him” Alice announced.

There was some silence as it sunk in. It had always been there lurking in the recesses of her mind – the thought of the possibility – but she had never confronted it. But Alice had now hit her with it like a Mack truck and it sucked the breath out of her.

“As much as I’d love to deny that, I think it’s true. And it’s annoying”, she sighed.

“Annoying?”

“Yes. I sorta feel it’s not right. He’s not right. No one is that right”

“Are you psychotic? Or some kinda girl that’s been so hurt by deceit that she just can’t see the good in anyone? Or you don’t believe you deserve better than your last?” Alice said, knowing she was on thin ice. But she had to be honest with her friend.

Zaneta sighed. “It feels right and wrong all at once. I’m confused. And I hate myself for being such a mess”

Alice rose and went around the desk to hug Zaneta.

“See, don’t over-think this. Just take it one day at a time. You guys are already off to a great start. I might be wrong but isn’t this the first time he’s done wrong?”

“It is” Zaneta replied.

Alice withdrew, picked up her bag, made it all the way to the door before saying “Wouldn’t you like to be given a second chance?”

*****************************

The next day, Zaneta made an effort to round up work. She left the office for 5:25pm and headed straight for the Island.

She arrived at his office and hoped she would meet him at work. If he was really how he portrayed himself to be – work engrossed, he would still be at work now. This was pretty awkward for her – coming here to broach a truce, but she had admitted to herself that she had overstepped with her treatment of him the day before. Since he had left her office yesterday, she had not heard a word from him. Of course she had expected that. She only just hoped it was not too late to make up.

She had come prepared.

At the reception, she smiled her most charming smile at Clarisa who greeted her equally warmly.

“Is Zach in?” she asked.

“Yes, ma” Clarisa replied reaching for the intercom, “I’ll just buzz to let him know you are here” she added.

“Oh! No, please, that won’t be necessary. Help me preserve my surprise” she pleaded with a wink.

“Of course, ma” Clarisa said with a knowing smile. She replaced the intercom.

“Thank you, darling. And this is for you” Zaneta said, slipping a buffet voucher she had gotten at work across the table to Clarisa.

“Thank you, ma” Clarisa said with a bright smile as she deftly slipped the voucher into her bag. “You can find your way, no?” she asked, rising to her feet.

“Sure. Thank you” Zaneta said and headed for the elevators.

Clarisa watched the elevator doors shut Zaneta in as it prepared to whisk her to the appropriate floor, then she pushed a button underneath her desk.

*

Zach heard the buzzer and sat up. He had been on a call with Malik. Malik had found someone in Senator Danbazau’s camp, a staff in his campaign office, they could likely lean on for information, especially information of the financial nature.

Zack punched a few keys on his computer and pulled up the camera feeds from the elevators. He found what Clarisa was warning him about without needing a closer look. One more keystroke and the screen returned to his desktop.

“This is good” Zach said to Malik on the phone.

“Yes. If we can hurt the money, we can really hurt them” Malik said.

Zach understood what they would go after was a list of campaign fund contributors. Then comb the list for people they can flip or decommission. It was almost impossible to win an election in such a huge and diverse nation without an almost limitless campaign fund. It was a game of numbers.

“True” he replied. But his mind had now shifted of its own accord to an ascending elevator and its occupant.

“I’ll let you know when I make contact” Malik said.

“Standing by” Zach said and rung off.

He rose, put the phone down and crossed the room in quick strides. He unlocked the door and went back to his seat at his desk, picked up the day’s newspaper and put his feet up.

A few seconds later, he heard a slight rap on the door.

“Yeah? It’s open” he called out from behind the newspaper.

He heard the door open and shut. Then he smelt her perfume. A knot formed in his chest. He wasn’t mad at her, he was half sad, half glad she had come.

He really liked her now, he knew that. But what was coming her way was going to be quite unpalatable and he would be its conduit. He really wished she stayed away from him, he would be glad to report, for the first time, that he had failed his mission. Yes, he liked her that much. In the same vein, he was glad she hadn’t left his world for good.

“Hey, Boss” she said standing before his desk.

Slowly he put the paper down. He was torn between saying “You really should have stayed away” and “I’m so glad you are here”. He instead went for a safe “Hey, you” with a small smile.

“You don’t look surprised” she said, still standing. Usually, by now, she’d have plunked herself in the sofa and he would be on his way to join her.

“Your perfume” he quickly said before she could think about it.

“Yeah. But aren’t you surprised you smelt it at all in the first place?” she pressed.

He rose. “Please, sit down, Zaneta” he said.

She felt a twinge of guilt as she sat. He resumed his seat after she was seated.

“See, I’m sorry about my outburst and how I treated you yesterday. I really am” she said.

“That’s all gone now, I’m just mighty pleased to see you. Maybe I’m not surprised because I have been willing it all day” he said with a smile. The knot in his chest was still there.

“Why are you being so gracious?” she asked, meeting his gaze directly for the first time since she arrived unannounced.

“Because some things are worth putting my hurt and pride aside for” he replied still smiling.

“Thank you” she said, almost ashamed of herself but glad she had resolved this and he had not made it hard for her one bit.

“Thank you too. Hungry?” he asked.

“Not yet. And let me not lie, I came for your pasta” she said making him laugh.

“In that case, we must leave” he said rising to his feet and picking up his jacket. “Mission resumed!” he thought.

She smiled and rose too. She almost said “I love you”. She bit on her tongue and stopped herself. A friend back in University had told her “You either tell him or show him, never both!” She would rather just show him.

***************************

They had eaten and drank and were lying together in silence on the rug in Zach’s living room when he suddenly spoke.

“Why were you so mad, though?” he asked.

“I dunno” she shrugged.

“Sure?” he pressed.

“Maybe because the last time a man started with the work excuses for disappearing and unavailability, was the beginning of the end of the relationship”

“OK” was his quiet reply. “I’ll never take you for granted. I need you to understand that”

She nodded and snuggled closer.

“And I also need you to know there’s no ‘She’ out there” he said kissing her.

“Sure?” she asked, being naughty.

“No, I’m not sure” he said, tickling her and making her scream.

***********************

“I didn’t even gist you” Zaneta said as she and Alice had lunch in Alice’s office.

It had been about a week since she reconciled with Zack and things had been ok. He was out of town again for work but she had made her peace with that.

“Yeah?” Alice replied then sipped from her mug.

“Kunle called me a while back”

“Ok?” Alice asked, interested.

“He went on and on about how one person can think another is out of his league then perspectives change and blah blah”

“Yeah?”

“Bottom line, he is considering” she stressed the ‘considering’, “proposing to Jade on her birthday”

“Huh? Which Jade?”

“Which other Jade?” Zaneta fired back laughing.

O ma gaa o” Alice said, making Zaneta laugh some more.

“Abeg, don’t make me spill my food” Zaneta managed. “Wait, so you guys don’t know?”

“I don’t. Maybe his padi does”

“Ah! Cos he expressly mentioned you and Bode being there”

“He did?”

“Then guess the icing on the cake”

Mba! I won’t even try. I can’t get on his bandwidth” Alice gave up. Zaneta could not stop laughing.

“He wants me to bring Max-Tee along for it” Zaneta finally announced.

“Choi! I haff die!” Alice shouted.

Both ladies burst out in uncontrollable laughter. They didn’t notice the door open.

“What are you guys laughing so hard about?” they suddenly heard Febi speak from the door. Beside her was the IT guy, Mr. Benson.

“Girl talk” Alice said, shutting down.

Zaneta smiled. She knew Alice had an issue with Mr. Benson.

“Zaneta, you good?” Febi asked.

Zaneta nodded. She had noticed Febi had gone just a little softer on her since the revelation of how she was related to Dr. Moloku.

“Mr. Benson is here to take a look at the printer” Febi announced.

“Finally” Alice said sarcastically. Got up, packed her partly eaten meal and left the room.

“Excuse me” Zaneta said with a smile, did the same and left.

When they finally settled in Zaneta’s office, Alice asked, “So, will you bring Max-Tee?”

“No be only Max-Tee, na Banky” Zaneta said with a hiss.

“Na wah”

“In other news, Zach and I are planning a getaway”

“Hmm….. Nice one”

“He wants a whole week, I can only do a weekend, And that sef has to be with plenty planning ahead”

“A whole week? Abi he sef wan propose?” Alice said, laughing.

“I doubt it. I know he likes me a lot, but to propose? Maybe much later if he is still around”

“You sound quite pessimistic, I must say”

“I don’t know why” she said, “maybe Edith’s stupid dreams?” she thought.

Alice sighed. “You need to let go of your past, babe” Alice admonished.

“I’m trying. But this feels more like something else” she said, contemplating whether to tell Alice about Edith’s dreams when there was a knock on the door.

“You have a delivery” Gladys said, peeking into the office.

“Bring it” Zaneta said flatly.

“OK” Gladys said and disappeared.

She reappeared a moment later with a box and a sheet for her to sign.

Zaneta signed and handed the sheet back. She didn’t touch the box until Gladys had left the room.

“From him?” Alice asked.

“I guess” Zaneta said and began to open the parcel. “Wow!” she said as took the wrapper off.

“What is it?” Alice asked.

“An Apple watch” she said. Just then her phone beeped.

It was a message from Zach:

Choose any weekend next month.

I really want this.

I hope you like your gift

“How did he know-” she left off as the answer to her question struck her.

“Know what?” Alice asked.

“I was going to ask how he knew I had received the gift” she said, getting back to unboxing her present.

“Delivery notification” Alice said.

“Yup” Zaenta agreed, picking up the watch itself. It was a beautiful white piece.

“This is really nice” Alice said, “and here you are forming reluctant”.

“We are going. He has accepted to do a weekend”

“Oh? Great. When?”

“Next month”

Alice smiled.

*******************************

Zach sat across from the lady as she scribbled out an account number. She was a single mother and used to be an auditor in one of the most prestigious accounting firms on the continent. But she had gotten pregnant for one of her bosses – a married man, shit had hit the fan and the guy had thrown her under the bus. She had been dismissed while he stayed on to become a Managing Partner. For a while she had been out of work and had later volunteered to work on Senator Danbazau’s campaign team almost 5 years ago.

They had realised she was an asset and soon she became a full time staff and then a staff on the Senator’s team when he assumed office after a landslide victory.

Today, she sat across from Zach because she had plans of her own. They had looked into her and learned a few things. She would be very useful.

“I need to know why” Zach said as he took the piece of paper containing the account number from her.

“Why what?” she asked. She had only agreed to meet him here in a hotel room after repeated assurances that she would be protected.

“Why are you doing this?”

“Why do you ask?”

“It is important I know why so we can adequately ensure it is taken care of” he said. He knew Malik and the Abuja team were listening in the next room.

“My son” she said after a long time contemplating.

“Ok?” Zach said, realising it wasn’t political. “Much better” he thought.

“That sick bastard wants to take my son from me. After all he has done to me. I need the money to fight back” she said.

“We know all about Mr. Odebode and the relationship between you two” Zach said with a smile that said “Trust me”.

She looked closely at him, but said nothing.

“Henry has the best mother he could ever hope for. And now that you have chosen to work with us, he will remain exactly where the love is – with you, his mum”

“How-” she was saying.

“Dorah, relax. Going forward, we are on your side in this fight. No one will take Henry from you”

“Thank you” she said, looking away, then “promise me we will be safe. I have no interest in politics, in fact it disgusts me. I only work there because I need to take care of my son”

“I understand this is nothing personal for you. Just for the money, right?” Zach asked.

“That’s it” she said, suddenly letting some strength show.

“Great. You and your son will be kept safe” Zach said and rose.

“I’ll take my leave now” she said rising too.

“When do I expect the list?”

“24 hours after the first instalment”

“Tomorrow night” Zach said, then added “Check your account when you get home”

“I will. Thank you, Zach”

“A pleasure” Zach said opening the door for Dorah’s exit.

The moment he shut the door, he called the next room. “Keep an eye on her. Round the clock” he said when he heard someone pick up.

*

“Do you believe her?” Malik asked.

They were sitting together in Zach’s hotel room discussing their progress.

“The facts are facts. I can’t say I really know her motives, she might not be totally sure herself. But if she won’t dump us at the slightest sign of resistance is a different matter” Zach analysed.

“Or give us away” Malik added.

“We’ll take our chances, won’t we?” Zach said.

“How about Zaneta?”

“Going well. We leave in 3 weeks”

“Second week of the new month?” Malik asked.

“Second weekend” Zach clarified, “she accepted today”

“What did that cost you?” Malik said, laughing.

“It’s not always about money, bro” Zach said.

Malik nodded. He didn’t like that angle one bit.

“Let’s stick around till we get the list tomorrow night” Zach said, going back to Dorah.

“That’s better” Malik agreed.

*********************************

Malik and Zach poured over print outs of the list of campaign funders for the Danbazau/Moloku ticket.

Dorah had come through and they had sent her the rest of her money.

As they both looked through their copies, often one person or the other will call out a name. Mostly names they recognised but were surprised to find on the list. The others were either expected to be on it or unknowns. This was not the list the public will ever find. This went way deeper. Over 60% of the names on this list would not want word to get out as to what they were doing. A good number too were also funding the Incumbent ticket.

Two-Timers” Zach thought shaking his head. “More like insurance, though” he accepted.

They were still going through it when Malik got a call. He spoke for a minute and Zach could tell who it was on the line – Retired General Aliu.

“He says we get on a bird and bring the list. He’s assembling a team to do the leg work. We are also to highlight the ones we think we can flip or neutralise” Malik said after the call ended.

“Yup. Expected that” Zach said, pulling on his shoes and beginning to pack up his stuff.

“It’s going to be a long night” Malik said, exiting the room.

******************************

It was another 36 hours before Zach left for his own home.

They had flown back, that night, to Lagos, been whisked to meet Aliu and 4 other guys and they had worked on strategy going forward.

Aliu had sought Zach’s opinion on a few issues, one being if they should leave Dorah alone.

“She gave me her word and I gave her mine. And we might need her for more stuff. I think if we press her some more there could be something juicier to find. Anyways, I’m having her watched” he had said.

7 names had been identified to be contacted by the team. They were to either make them stop the funding of the Opposition ticket or be taken out. That was the first phase.

But Zach had been exempted from the mission, he was to focus on Zaneta. For this he was glad, but had not shown it.

He sent a text to her before he hit the bath saying he was finally home and had missed her.

She texted back that she would swing by after work.

***********************

“Hello, Dad” Zaneta greeted Dr. Moloku. It had been a while she had meet him in the house.

“How are you, Ogechi? How was work today?”

“Fine Dad. How’s the campaign trail?” she asked taking a seat beside him.

“God has been faithful” he said with a satisfied smile.

“I’m happy for you” she said hugging him.

“I should be preparing for the ANTV sponsored VP debate on the 13th” he said, “but I need a few days to rest first” he said.

“13th? I guess I’ll be watching it with Alice”

“Alice?” he asked.

“Yes, naa. My friend that recently got married”

“Oh! Where will you both be watching from?” he asked, knowing this was leading somewhere.

“We are going on a road trip”

“To?” he asked

“We were planning on visiting a tourist destination. Still trying to decide on which will be the most fun and least stress” she lied glibly. There was no way she was telling her uncle she was going away for the weekend with a man.

“Is her husband going with you?” he asked.

“That’s the plan, Sir” another lie rolled off her lips.

“Whatever you people decide, keep Tunji in the loop. I don’t want you girls wandering off without someone at least looking out for you”

“Dadddddddd! We are adults o! Alice is a married woman o!”

“Do you watch the news, Ogechi?”

Zaneta made no reply. She knew what he was talking about – the rising cases of kidnapping and election incised violence breaking out across the country.

“The polity is really heated, no thanks to the present leaders who do not want to relinquish power even in the face of their own abject failure and the clamour for change from the electorate”

“I understand, Dad”

“As yet, the best I can do is doing whatever it takes to keep me and mine safe. By the grace of God in a few months, we will be in office and we can begin to correct the rot. So, please, don’t think I’m trying to spoil your fun. Just do as I have told you or stay here”

“Yes, Dad. I know it is because you love me”

“I’m happy you know”

“When is mum coming home?”

“Why don’t you ask her, Ogechi?”

“Ok, Dad, I will”

Dr. Moloku shook his head as Zaneta left his side. He would never be able to make the two most important women in his life truly live as one.

*

Zaneta sat on her bed. “It is time” she surmised.

She picked up her phone with a sigh and hit Zach’s number, it was never too far down on her call log. She checked the time on her wrist watch as the phone rang, she was wearing the white Apple Watch he had gotten her like she had done most days since she got it.

“Hello” his voice came over the line.

“Hi” she said.

“What’s up?”

“There’s something I need to tell you, Zach” she said.

In The Shadows 16 – Greg Emuze

Zach looked at the screen of his phone.

The Rtd. General hardly ever called anyone. Everyone just gravitated towards him. You called him and he decided whether or not to speak with you. If he ever called you, understand that your well-being depended on it. He wasn’t called the Mai Yaki for nothing.

Long before he retired from the Army, his fame had spread through all of the Armed Forces and Defence arms and then into Government and Politics. His exploits in Sierra Leone where he commanded an ECOMOG company that played a pivotal role in shutting down the civil war was legendary.

There were rumours back then of how the then Major General Aliu made a fortune selling or facilitating the illegal sale of conflict diamonds. But they had been just that – rumours.

Zach hadn’t served with him, but Malik had, Zach had served under another Commanding Officer, a younger cousin to Aliu. He was now late, but had been the man that brought Zach into the fold. The man had found him, brought him into politics and four years ago, had picked up a relatively unknown Banker and literarily made him President. With connections in the armaments business, he easily became the nation’s number one military contractor both for equipment and security personnel.

“Hello, Sir” Zach replied, almost standing at attention.

“Malik is on his way to pick you up, be ready” he simply said and hung up.

Quickly, Zach called Malik

“Zach, ready?” Malik answered.

“Do I need to pack?” Zach asked.

“No. It’s a meeting. Banana” Malik said, stating the purpose and place.

“Ok. I’ll be by the gate” Zach said and hung up.

He looked himself over in the reflection on one of the glass doors as he made his way down the stairs. He was in a T-Shirt, a pair of joggers and slippers. He couldn’t go back to change, what would he tell Zaneta? Where would he say he was suddenly off to at past 8pm. It was best he left this way. His worry was how long this would take.

He couldn’t go back for a weapon either so he stopped at the security office and picked up a standard issue S&M pistol, slipped it into the pocket of his joggers and walked to the gate. They’d asked him if he needed anyone to come along, but he’d declined the offer. He never liked fraternising with the security on the various premises where he served as Facility Manager. They knew he was much more than a FacMan and accorded him plenty of respect and leeway.

He stood by the gate, away from the light, hands in pockets, observing the road. He knew if the mandate at AlphaTrag was still active, which it very likely was, someone was out there watching him. Now he thought back to the night at the hotel with Seyi, could he have managed it better? Maybe he should have just owned up to not having what they wanted? But he realised then, as he did now, that pursuing such a line of action meant he became useless to whoever wanted the info and that automatically meant he wouldn’t matter to them dead or alive. They most likely would choose him dead since they already made contact.

“Show yourselves,” he murmured, “please, make a mistake”. He knew sooner than later, they would and he would pick up the thread again.

The guy who had been at the Hospital, the one who ended up dying in the car crash, he had found out was a staff at the Hotel. Whether or not he was involved with AlphaTrag Zach might never know. But he could bet all that he had that he was likely the snoop in the Hotel that informed on Zach to the dude with the sledgehammer punches.

He rubbed his jaw in reflex as he spotted an SUV indicate a right turn. It pulled up beside him and the window rolled down.

It was Malik driving a Discovery 4 2015.

“What’s up?” Zach said as he opened the door and climbed in.

“I dunno. Got a call to pick you up for an urgent meeting”

“Where were you?”

“Out” was Malik’s flat answer. Zach didn’t like it but knew he couldn’t do anything about it.

“Nice ride. New?” Zach asked

“Just got it”

“Congratulations” Zach said genuinely. Wondering for a moment what had become of the Infinity FX45 Malik owned before this.

“You should change yours too” Malik suggested about Zach’s SUV.

“Maybe when I earn as much as you do” Zach said.

Malik laughed and left it at that.

“Anyways, my Volvo is barely 3 years on Nigerian roads and it’s a 2010”

“So was my FX”

“I guess we are back to the same spot – money”

“What do you do with all your earnings, though? You’ve had some good jobs in recent times and your salary is steady from the Holdings” Malik said referring to the Real Estate company that paid Zach’s Facility Manager salary monthly.

“Stuff”

“Wife and kids somewhere in the diaspora?” Malik chided

“You would know, wouldn’t you?”

Malik nodded with a smile. He was a 34 year old fighting and killing machine that had also left the Army for the good life the Retired General offered. If Malik had always been this close to Aliu and the diamond rumours were true, then Malik was a very rich man without all he made as Aliu’s head of security.

Zach looked him over, he wore a flowingJalamia with combat shorts under. Zach knew somewhere in those pockets or in this vehicle was a very good pistol or two.

“What are you looking at?”

“Trying to ascertain who she is”

“Who?”

“The babe you were with before the call came in”

“Die trying” Malik replied making Zach laugh.

As they were buzzed in at gates of the Banana Island residence of Aliu, Malik spoke again.

“Where’s the girl?”

“Zaneta?” Zach didn’t care much for that sort of reference. He knew Malik was messing with him.

“Yeah, lover boy, Za- fucking -neta!”

“You know where she is dude” Zach said, getting out and shutting the door of the SUV on Malik’s laughter. He looked around, spotted a Mercedes ML 320 2014 that didn’t belong there.

“Here we go” he said to himself, as he walked to the door.

********************

Zaneta picked up her phone. Zach had been gone for almost an hour!

“How far did he walk the dog naa?” she said sitting up and pausing the movie she was watching.

She dialled his number, it rang out. She tried 2 more times, same thing.

She rose and took the intercom off the wall, she dialled ‘1’ for reception.

“Hello” she said when someone picked up.

“Good evening, ma”

“Please, is Zach there?” she asked, refusing to sound worried.

“He stepped out, ma”

“He drove?”

“No, ma. He walked”

“With Raiden? The dog?” she added, the person might not know the dog’s name.

“No, ma. Alone”

“Ok, thanks” she said and hung up.

She picked up her phone and hammered out a message:

Where are you, Zach?

Now she was fuming. How would he just walk away like that? Then the lie about walking Raiden!

“This nicca had better not try me” she said, trying his number again twice. Still no answer.

She switched off the TV and walked unto the terrace. “What the heck is this? What have I become, though? That some dude can just leave me in the house and walk off into the night. So, what? I’m supposed to sit here and wait like some subservient girlfriend?” she said pacing.

*

Zach felt his phone buzz in his pocket, but there was no way he was pulling it out.

He was seated in a living room with his boss – Rtd. Gen. Aliu, the President’s Chief of Staff with two of his men and Malik. It wasn’t a good meeting. The bosses and the president himself were worried about the recent turn of events. Not only was the opposition gaining unprecedented popularity with the electorate, they were leading in most polls and they seemed to be creating problems for the incumbent and his party on every turn.

The politics and performance of their candidates were however, not the reason for this meeting. It was the other factor – the fact that the opposition was playing dirty.

“Sir,” the Chief of Staff spoke after some silence, “I know our men have done well in plugging leaks and quelling full scale anarchy, but I think it’s time we stopped being reactionary and get on the offensive for a change, Sir”

Even the CoS knew to punctuate his address to Aliu with ‘Sir’ often.

“I agree” was all Aliu said.

“What has come of the documents we seized from the Lawyer and Silas?” the CoS asked.

“The juicy stuff has been prepared for release. Come the debates, some journalists will have interesting questions for Danbazau and Moloku after which they will be leaked online” Malik replied.

“Forgive me if I am not excited about that, we might have lost the elections before the debate at this rate” the CoS replied, avoiding Aliu’s stare.

Then he turned to Aliu and asked a question that shocked Zach “What about the trump card we spoke about? The stuff about Moloku?”

Aliu looked over at Zach, then said “He is on it”.

Every eye in the room fell on Zach for a moment. He didn’t move or utter a word.

“Ok” the CoS finally said, then “I will tell thePresident -” as he rose, but Aliu cut him short.

“I will call Dimeji myself” Aliu said, mentioning the president’s first name. A reminder to the CoS that he needed no intermediaries. “Your concerns have been noted. Watch this space” he added gayly, making nervous laughter flow from the President’s men.

Once the CoS and his guys were out of the house (Aliu hadn’t risen to see him off, Malik and Zach had taken a cue and remained glued their seats), Aliu spoke “come closer”

Malik and Zach immediately took seats on both sides of him.

“I want you guys to find anything and everything there is to find and tighten the screws” Aliu said.

“Yes, Sir” they both replied.

“And what’s this with you and AlphaTrag?” Aliu said, turning to Zach.

Zach was too much in awe to be surprised, but managed to find his voice “Slight scrape, Sir. I didn’t bring it up because I thought it was unrelated. I was approached through a personal asset”

“I’m sure you don’t believe all that yourself. I admire your courage, taking the heat alone and sitting on it is also commendable, but you must realise this is a team and we are as good as our weakest link. Don’t fall for the isolation technique, it is older than the book” Aliu admonished his soldier. He was a very well read man, beyond his reputation for action, he did tend to talk up his men.

“I’m sorry, Sir. Thank you, Sir” Zach said.

“What did they want?”

“The contents of the Professor’s hard disk”

“Do you have it?”

“My orders were to destroy, Sir” Zach said, reminding the Rtd. General what his orders had been and also making it clear those were what he followed. Unquestioningly.

“How is she now?” Aliu asked.

“The lady in question?” Zach asked, thinking of Seyi.

“Moloku’s daughter” Aliu clarified.

“More trusting” Zach simply said.

“Do you envisage any difficulties?”

“Aside AlphaTrag and her uncle’s people? No” he replied, thinking “Oh! And you pulled me out here to listen to that retarded CoS ramble for an hour while she has been trying to reach me – big fucking problem, Sir!

“They are one and the same” Aliu said, dropping a bomb shell. Even Malik looked stunned.

“One Tunji Ashiru, SAN, Moloku’s right hand man was the one working with the Prof, trying to get him in as head of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. That in itself would mean they had that pressure group in their pockets. You know how greedy those ones are. When that train derailed, he thought the next best thing was to get his hands on the info since the Prof, who promised to sell it to him in exchange for the ASUU throne was no more” Aliu explained.

“God punish the smart little devil!” Malik swore.

“There you all go again. This guy is not ‘little devil’. He has brought Moloku this far, he clearly will stop at nothing to finish what he started. He came from nothing but has aligned himself with power and wealth. Do you know he introduced Moloku to his wife?”

“No way!” Malik exclaimed. Zach was just too shocked for words.

“Get to work, guys” Aliu said, rose and left the room.

Outside as they made their way to Malik’s SUV, Zach checked his phone. She had left him 7 missed calls and one SMS.

Shit” Zach thought. How was he to explain this to her?

He tried calling twice, she didn’t take them. He only hoped he’d meet her in the house, after all, it was a Saturday night. But he had serious doubts.

Well, she hadn’t sent another message to say she was leaving” he rationed. “Maybe she was just mad and deciding not to answer my calls

They rode in silence till they arrived at Zach’s place.

“How about a few drinks with me, man? The night is still young” Malik asked.

“Drinking is a solitary sport, man. Have fun” Zach said and climbed out.

He rode the elevator to his floor. His door was unlocked. He opened it and called out her name a few times. No response. Her shoes and bag were gone. He looked out on the terrace and then in the bedroom which she had never entered, but she was gone. The kitchen was clean – she’d cleaned up the dishes they’d used.

He sighed, poured himself a drink and sat on a stool.

*

An incoming call interrupted her music as she sped home on third mainland bridge.

She looked down at the phone, it was Zach. She ignored it and kept her eyes on the road. Yet another call from him came in, she hissed.

“You’ve gone to see her, now you are looking for Zaneta” she said, then hissed again, “it’s not your fault” she added.

 **************************

Sunday crawled past for Zaneta. She had ignored her alarm in a bid to sleep a little extra but had then woken up late for church. She then cancelled the idea of church completely, switched her phone to silent and soaked in the bath, reading a novel.

After a good long soak, she made herself some breakfast – a rare event and ate downstairs at the dining table while watching TV. The news was good for her Uncle whom she hadn’t seen in a while. Uncle Tunji too had been pretty scarce. She had gotten used to being alone in the house with the staff.

After her breakfast, she sat at the table trying to fathom why Zach had acted the way he had. She wrote it off to “See finish” and already knew what his excuse will be – Work. Well, it was time to crank up her value some by reducing her availability.

By the time she got back to her phone, she had 5 missed calls. 2 from Edith – likely trying to track her down in church, 2 from Zach and another 1 from Kunle, Bode’s best man. The last one was a surprise, so she called him back.

“Hey” he said as he picked up.

“Good afternoon, Kunle”

“Good afternoon, you were still in church when I called, I presume” he began.

“Yes” she lied, not wanting to get into the ‘why didn’t you go to church?’ gist with anyone. Nigerians were notorious for that.

He asked about her welfare and work and folks and kept rambling about non-issues. She rolled her eyes, “Nicca, get to the point already!” she thought impatiently.

They were not chums or stuff. They just happened to have met a few times around Alice or Bode. All three went to school together.

“I need a favour” he finally cut to the chase.

“Yes?” she asked.

“You know how you can assume, for a decade, that someone is out of your league and then you suddenly realise, one day that you have been looking at it all wrong?”

“Yeah…” Zaneta said, not knowing.

“Ok, that’s how I have been with Jade. But since the wedding – Bode’s wedding – I have suddenly seen it from a different perspective and I have changed my approach towards her”

“Oh! Cool” Zaneta said, knowing now what this was about but having no clue as to how it was her concern. “Why are you calling, bro?” she thought.

“We have been talking and we have seen a few times, I’d had to travel to Abuja twice”

“Nice”

“I like her a whole lot and I see she does like me too”

“Great”

“I plan to propose to her on her birthday, that’s in 4 months. And this is where I really need your help”

“Ok?”

“If I still feel this way and this sure about her by then, I’d like to have you all and Max-Tee present. In fact, I need him as a kind of star appearance for the occasion”

“Huh?” she said. “Ok? What is this?” she thought.

“I know I sound all loony and stuff, but I think I’m in love” he said, laughing nervously.

“Hold on. I’m happy for you both and all of this sounds really nice. Alice, Bode and myself, I assume, are the ‘you all’ you meant, yeah?”

“Correct. And Max-Tee for the wow-factor”

“Max-Tee for the wow-factor” she repeated. “This guy was reaching!

“Correct”

“And this is happening in four months?”

“Correct. The thing is, you know how busy and booked these guys are, I was thinking you could maybe whisper the date to him and he could kinda make time to be there. Just a few minutes, I assure you”

Zaneta was quiet. Her mind was trying to work, but the whole conversation felt like swimming through pap.

“Are you there?” she heard his voice.

She wanted to ask “Wait, you are kind of planning a proposal that you are not yet sure will happen on a date that is 4 months away and you want me to bring a celebrity, a superstar just like that? And you are not even sure yet!” but she didn’t.

Instead she said “I haven’t been in touch with Max-Tee in a while, but I’ll try”

Kunle suddenly exhaled. “Thank you” he said.

“No guarantees, but I’ll try” she said with the understanding that what he believed was what Max-Tee had said about her bringing him to Alice’s wedding. To her knowledge, the only other person that knew how it had truly happened was Alice.

“Thank you, Zaneta. Thanks a lot”

“I’m happy for you both and I hope it works out” she said, sincerely. Though she didn’t care much for how he was approaching the proposal thing.

A few more lines of niceties and she rung off.

“Hian! These guys sha! ‘If I still feel this way and this sure about her by then…’ which kind bants?” she said to herself laughing. “So he can change his mind, then call us all to cancel, plus Max-Tee! I am dead!” she laughed so hard it hurt.

“Girls have suffered sha!” she said, her mind going to last night. “The knucklehead who could actually make Kunle’s plan work was acting like a…..” she left off. Quickly she brought her mind back to the present. She needed some distraction. “No wallowing” she assured herself.

She picked up her phone and dialled Alice.

“Hey, babe” Alice spoke the moment it connected.

“Mrs! Wassap?” she said.

“I dey o”

“Una go church?”

“No jare”

“Na wah! This honeymoon no dey finish?” Zaneta teased.

“Aunty Zaneta, if it is the honeymoon you want, go and marry” Alice replied.

Zaneta laughed for almost a whole minute before speaking again; “I’m coming over jare, get dressed. Let me steal you for the rest of the day. Bode no go vex”

“Oooose! Where are we going?”

“As the spirit leads” Zaneta replied, honestly having no idea but knowing once they joined forces, fun would happen. It was a given.

“You have kuku not washed your car for me”

“Verily, verily I say unto you, today is the day!” Zaneta declared.

“Yes! Praise Master Jesus. Let me go and take excuse from Oga”

Zaneta was still laughing when Alice hung up.

She pulled open her closet doors. She was going to be scandalous today.

**************

It was almost 10pm when they pulled up in front of Alice’s place.

“Thanks for coming out with me”

“What? It was a date nii” Alice said laughing.

“Yeye. You are married”

“Oh! So you do girls?” Alice teased.

“Naaah!” Zaneta said. “That’s all behind me now” she almost added, but held her tongue.

“Don’t mind me, jare. It was fun. Thanks”

“Bode hasn’t called?”

“No. I promised to be back for 10, I’m on time”

“True that”

“Wait! Remind me again, what did you say to that guy that was trying to chat you up with his Jand accent?” Alice asked, already giggling.

“Jand sha! If I hear. Dude was too fake abeg!”

Alice laughed, the said “Yes, I’m trying to remember how you told him off, the exact words”

“Nicca backflip, jooor” Zaneta repeated for Alice’s benefit. She shook her head as Alice laughed.

“You will not kill somebody, you this girl. Backflip sha!”

“Abi?”

“Kai! You just killed his morale. Deflated his swag”

Ko pele” Zaneta said.

“Sure you didn’t take out your anger about Zach on him?” Alice asked now serious.

“No correlation. Different kinds of silly” Zaneta said. She had told Alice what Zach had done when he had called again in her presence and she had sent him the busy tone. Twice.

Alice had advised she’ at least’ heard him out. But she hadn’t budged. She wasn’t convinced with Alice’s benefit-of-doubt theory that it could have been some kind of emergency. She was almost 100% certain it was another woman.

“Alright. Let’s do this again soon” Alice said, picking up her bag.

“Def!”

“More cars to come”

“Amen o. The ones I will buy with my own money” Zaneta replied.

“Well, it seems you will be moving to Aso Rock soon, the way the thing dey go”

“Please, don’t get my hopes up, abeg” Zaneta said, dismissing the political discussion.

Alice’s phone rang.

“Bode” Alice said.

“10pm” Zaneta said, looking at the clock on her dashboard.

“Tomorrow, dear”

“Ok. Good night”

“If he calls again, please, pick up, we have to forgive them, ehn, if we don’t who will?” Alice said as she climbed out of the car.

“Their mothers will” was Zaneta’s retort.

Alice only shook her head and left.

*

As she stepped in the shower she wondered why he had not made an effort to find her at home. At least he knew her place, even if he had never been in. She had actually asked the security men if anyone had come asking after her.

She shrugged the thought off and began to hum a tune.

*

Zack put the jump-rope away. He thought about calling her, but decided against it. It was now clear she didn’t want to hear his explanation. He was also determined not to text, the situation could easily escalate with one misunderstood or improperly worded line of text. He had to handle her with extreme care. With the Presidency and Party depending on him to deliver on his mission, he couldn’t blow it over some “lovers’ quarrel”.

He was sufficiently exhausted from his workout, “Sleep should come easy” he thought as he walked off the terrace and into his apartment.

*******************

She was tired and hungry. The meeting had started late and had lasted two times the amount of time allotted for it. She wished she could hand this particular client off to someone else, but she knew it couldn’t be done.

The elevator ride to her floor was too slow for her this evening. As she got off and walked to her office she listened to her heels click against the floor. She opened the office door to her office and there he was, sitting at her desk, his back to her.

She didn’t have to hear his voice or see his face to know it was him. His perfume, his hair, her heartbeat were enough. She pulled herself together before she spoke.

“Who let you into my office?”

“The guard downstairs. Gladys had gone for the day” he said, rising to his feet and turning to face her.

“Great. I hope whatever you tipped him with will sustain him till he finds a new place of employment ‘cos he is fired”

“Come on, darling, don’t be -“

She held a finger up as she walked past him to her desk. She sat on the edge, facing him, placed her MacBook on the surface, then crossed her legs.

“I don’t want to hear what you have scripted and practised to say. Lies are what they are” she said, looking at him calmly.

“May I?” he asked pointing to the seat he had been sitting in.

“No. You may not sit”

He smiled.

“I don’t want to hear you say ‘it was a work emergency’, I know it wasn’t. I know she sent for you. It’s fine. I don’t even want an apology”

He kept smiling.

“The smile won’t work, Zach. No one ever takes me for granted; I’m not cut from that cloth. Do not treat me with such blatant disrespect ever again” she said, fire in her eyes.

He turned the smile down a notch then, said “Ok. I get it”

“I really hope you do, Zach” she said, got off the desk and went to her seat.

“I was thinking we could -“

“No. I have work to wrap up” she cut him off.

Now Zach was beginning to boil, but he kept the smile on with all he had.

“Ok, Z. When do we get to see again?”

“I’ll call you when I’m up to it. Good night, Zach”

Fuck this” he thought, turned around and marched out of her office.

In The Shadows 15 – Greg Emuze

“You really like the car, no?” Zach asked as Zaenta sat in the car and turned the ignition.

It was getting quite late and they had agreed she had better get going.

“Almost” she replied.

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing, jare

“No. Talk, I want to hear all about it” he said, eyes twinkling with mischief.

“Just that I wanted customised plates” she didn’t like to call them Vanity plates, though Uncle Tunji had taught her that was the proper name.

“Vanity plates?” he asked

“Yes” she said rolling her eyes.

“What would they say?”

“Zaneta?” she said, now feeling embarrassed.

“Why on earth would you want that?”

“You and my pops belong together” she declared trying to shut her door. He held on to it laughing.

“Okay, I’m not saying never, but maybe not yet. OK?”

“Why?”

“Let me say it like this. Why don’t you wait till the name ‘Zaneta’ means something to everyone?”

“Hmm…” she said, not seeing the sense in what he just said but not about to be bothered. It was a forgone conclusion anyway. Maybe when she was able to afford to buy a car out of her own pockets, she could do as she wished with the plates.

“Drive safe, dear” he said, then bent and planted a kiss on her cheek.

“Good night” she said, shut her door and drove out.

He rode the elevator back to his apartment, his jaw still hurt and so did his chest, they weren’t about to let him forget his latest escape. Bizi had promised he’d have something in the morning. He’ll just sit tight till then.

His only worry was that this might only be the prelims.

**************************

He was just settling down at the office the next day when Bizi called

“Good morning” Zach said picking up.

“Good morning, Sir”

“Whachyu gat for me?”

“Nothing new”

“Nothing new?”

“Yeah. But I did confirm our suspicion that they are on someone’s mandate. Finding that ‘someone’ is the only way to diffuse this situation”

“OK. Any other thing?”

“Nothing for now”

“Thank you” Zach said and rung off. “Why didn’t this happen when I didn’t have a mission like Operation Stephen?” he pondered then realised that was exactly why anyway.

Operation Stephen had taken him out to Ife, he had taken care of the Professor and wiped the hard disk as requested by General Aliu. It was the content of that hard disk that the bozo from the hotel had come for. Seyi was a personal asset he had acquired in Ife. That’s why they had found her and tried to leverage the relationship against him.

Seyi. The poor girl” he thought shaking his head. They’d been introduced by his drinking buddy in Ife – Banji. Maybe he needed to reach out to Banji and ask a few questions, he was Zach’s only link to Seyi.

His worries were multiplying.

What would Seyi say when she came to? Surely it was a matter of time before the police would link him to her – he’d been footing her bills at the hotel where she was staying.

Zach sighed.

*************************

“Leaving early, I see” she heard Febi’s voice.

Zaneta turned to find Febi at her door looking in. She was packing up her stuff.

“Yes. Going to the hospital to visit a sick friend” she said, looking at her watch again to confirm it was past 5pm.

“Was planning on riding with you” Febi said.

“Oh! Sure, why not?”

“Give me a few minutes to round off my work, its even your work sef” Febi said

“My work?” Zaneta asked.

“Yes. Hiring an intern for your department”

“She say na department” Zaneta said laughing. The truth was she was the department. Alone.

“You’ll wait?” Febi asked, getting back to the matter.

“You won’t be long?” Zaneta asked.

“No. But if I am?” Febi challenged.

Zaneta shook her head. “What’s up with your car?” she asked.

“Alternator issues” Febi said and was gone.

Zaneta resumed her seat and got back to chatting with Zach.

*

“You drove yourself?” Febi asked, somewhat surprised as they arrived the office car park.

“Yep” Zaneta said.

They got in the vehicle and drove for a bit listening to the radio before Febi spoke.

“I’m not really one to pay attention to politics but the name Moloku, the VP candidate of the Opposition, it rang a bell when I heard it on the cab to work this morning”

“Yeah?” Zaneta asked, she wondered where Febi was going to with this gist.

“I knew I had seen the name somewherebefore, so I ran a system search and found it. The name is on your CV, a referee and also signed your guarantor’s form” she said looking at Zaneta.

“Yes, that’s correct” Zaneta said meeting Febi’s look.

“Is it the same Dr. Japheth Moloku?”

“Yes, it is” Zaneta replied, inching forward in traffic.

“Who’s he to you?”

“My uncle”

“Maternal?”

“Yes”

“That’s why you don’t have the Moloku name”

Zaneta giggled “That’s correct” she added.

“What’s funny?” Febi asked with a frown.

“You said ‘The Moloku Name’ as if it was ever a big deal till very recently”

Febi laughed, “well, it is now” she added.

“Indeed” Zaneta said “You have an impressive memory, though”

“Tools of the trade” Febi said smiling.

Unless, of course you only just made that up after finding out some other way” Zaneta thought. She wondered how long before everyone, including her followers on Social Media, found out who she really was. And then Zach too. “Would he feel somehow about it? If he found out himself? Maybe I should tell him

“Penny for your thoughts?” Febi broke her thoughts.

“Just wondering when we’ll get to the mainland” she lied.

*****************************

Zach had just gotten off the phone with Banji. He’d approached the Seyi matter with tact while recording the conversation so he could listen again for possible clues. But from the conversation, Banji was unaware of Seyi’s location or predicament. Zach had simply said he had been trying to reach her without success.

The conversation had not ended without Banji reminding Zach that his MSc was almost done and he would be coming for assistance with employment. He’d then mentioned to Banji that he’d left the bank and was with another organisation now but would render whatever help he could – standard gist to get the dude to relax.

Neither Bizi nor his Police Informant had called him and no one had tried to knock him senseless today.

He tried to remember what they said about no news. “Good news, yeah?” he thought. He poured himself some Gin and juice, washed down some aspirin with it and lay down on the couch. Aside the security men, he was alone in the office. The other offices would likely still be agog with activity, especially the financial institutions.

He tried to focus on his next step. It was simply to get Zaneta to agree to taking a trip with him. They had been chatting all day. He’d opted for that since he couldn’t get much work done. She’d mentioned going to the hospital again to see the sick kid, he had smiled. He knew exactly who’s kid it was.

*****************************

“Good night, Sebastian” Zaneta said as she shut the door.

“Thanks for coming, Zaneta” Edith said.

“It is a pleasure. I’m glad you guys are leaving tomorrow”

“Thanks”

They walked in silence till they reached Zaneta’s Accord.

“Would be nice if you came to the house tomorrow” Edith said

“I’ll think about it”

“When did you begin to talk like them?”

“Like who?”

“Men. The commitment-shy ones”

Zaneta smiled, “Funny, I don’t know one”

“Good for you”

“Why do you want me in the house, Edith?”

“We time”

“I didn’t like how the last time turned out”

“Really now?”

“Yes, really. I have explained over and over, I don’t want to go down that road. 8 months is enough”

“You sound like you are saying you wasted 8 months”

“I said it was enough. Not wasted, Edith! Please, don’t put words in my mouth”

“He really must be something, this new guy”

“Can we not go there?”

“Why?”

“This is not about him. We were over before I met him”

“I want to meet him”

“Why?”

“The dreams”

“No” was Zaneta’s flat reply before she realised Edith had said ‘dreams’ not ‘dream’. She looked enquiringly at her.

“Yes. You heard right. I had it again last night”

“Did you pray and cancel it for me?”

“Have you prayed about him?” Edith asked accusingly.

“Good night, Edith” Zaneta said, flung her purse – the one Zach had given her, into the car, got in and drove off.

She drove past a black Nissan Sentra. Inside sat the man who’d watched her last night with Zach.

******************************

Zach read the statement for the second time. He smiled. Seyi was absolutely brilliant.

It had been a few days after they moved her from ICU to a regular ward and she was recuperating fine. The Police had finally gotten her statement and his informant had mailed him a copy.

Basically, what she had said was that she had been staying at the hotel for a few days, had gone out to buy shawarma that night and while waiting for her order had shared a table with a man she didn’t know. He had been nice and they had talked genially. He hadn’t gotten her number or tried to pick her up. She had gotten her order, said “good night” and left. Someone had later turned up at her door asking questions about the man from the shawarma place. She had told the man (whom she said had identified himself as an undercover cop) she didn’t know who the man from the shawarma place was. She couldn’t remember the rest of the night clearly but the man from the shawarma place had suddenly turned up and a scuffle had ensued. When shown the picture of the dead AlphaTrag Operative, she had identified him as the man from the shawarma place.

Zach leaned back. He was impressed. She had stuck to the truth as much as she could manage without really giving anything away.

There was however the loose end of why she was at the hotel. That, Zach knew would lead back to him. He had to pre-empt the police.

According to the police report, security cameras had picked up the entrance of both men into her room and the exit of one. Their faces had not been captured and both had come in and left through a service entrance.

“So far, so good” he said, picked up his phone and dialled Seyi’s number. She picked up almost immediately.

“Zach!” she whispered.

“Hey, dear” he said in his best ‘I’ve been worried sick about’ you voice.

“I didn’t say anything” she said, still whispering.

“Shhhh!” He said, “I know. Don’t stress yourself. Are you allowed visitors?”

“Yes. Evenings. But a policeman is outside”

“That’s fine. I’ll see you soon”

“Ok”

“Do you need anything?”

“When you come” she said

“Ok” Zach said “Get well fast. You should call Banji too, he’s worried about you”

“Ok. I will”

“Bye” Zach said and rung off.

*

The following Sunday he was sitting before the police D.P.O in charge of the case. It was an orchestrated meeting.

His statement had been taken. All for formality.

“This is fine” the D.P.O said.

“Can I go see her now?”

“Sure” he said, “SP Tina has assured methat you are a law abiding citizen, we have nothing to fear about you being around the lady”

“Thank you, Sir. You are very kind” Zach said leaving an envelope on the couch as he rose.

“You are welcome” said the man, “but be careful. It seems your lady friend made friends with the wrong crowd in her short stay in town”

“You know how naive women can be, Sir” Zach said with a sorrowful shake of the head.

“No, problem. We have round-the-clock security on her. Once she is fine, we will make sure she returns to school” the officer said as if a two and a half hour trip was all she needed to be out of harm’sway.

“Thank you, Sir”

“My regards to General Aliu”

“He’ll hear” Zach said, leaving the office.

It seemed no one bothered to remember the General was retired. He couldn’t blame them, he was practically the President’s boss. He was a kingmaker in his own right. Everyone wanted to be on his good side. Well, everyone aside these folks fomenting trouble for the ruling party.

He drove down to the hospital and found Seyi’s room. He greeted the policeman who sat outside looking bored and tired.

“24-hour security” Zach scoffed silently.

“Hey” she said as he walked in. She was alone reading a book.

“You look good, darling” he said planting a kiss on her forehead.

She was wearing a flimsy hospital ward gown.

“Be winding me there” she said smiling.

“I’m so sorry, Seyi. I wish I had stopped him sooner” he whispered in her ear.

She nodded.

“I have spoken to the police, everything is fine. Told them you came to see me and I put you up in that hotel, but that I had not had the chance to look you up before the incident” he added.

“Okay” she replied.

That done, he took a seat at the foot of her bed.

“Don’t laugh, oh! Is it me or are you dressed like Lucious Lyon?” she said.

“Lucious who?” he feigned ignorance.

“Lucious Lyon. He’s a character in a TV series”

“Ah! I see” he said

“I noticed last time I came to your office too, but….” she left off

“I don’t know who that is, but is this a compliment?”

“Of course!” she chimed.

“Then I should give my stylist a bigger tip” he said making her laugh.

He rubbed her feet. He could see the bulge of the bandage around her tommy.

“Talking about money, I brought you some” he said pulling out an envelope and placing it in her laps just as the door opened.

An older woman who Zach instinctively knew was Seyi’s mum came in carrying a bag.

“Oh! Sorry. Mi o mo pe o l’alejo” the woman apologised, making to retreat.

“Good evening, ma. Please, its fine. I was about leaving” he said rising from the bed.

“Good evening, my dear” she said, shutting the door behind her.

Zach turned to Seyi “Please, the moment you feel strong enough, let’s get you back to school. I will arrange it. Do not wait until you are discharged, you can continue your care in Ife”

“Ok, Sir” she said.

As Zach walked down to his car, he spotted someone on the other side of the road pretending to pee. Pretending because he heard nothing.

He took a look, while feeling in his jacket for his gun. The man looked in his direction and their eyes met. Zach instantly recognised the face – the staff he’d bumped into while leaving Seyi’s hotel room the other night!

“He had to know something” Zach surmised.

He didn’t want to draw his weapon, there were people all over. So he turned and walked towards the guy.

On realising Zach was coming for him, he began to walk away.

Zach picked up his pace and the guy broke into a run.

Zach stayed on the guy’s heels keeping him in sight by going at a steady jog. Next thing the guy ran into a the car parks and disappeared.

Carefully, Zach walked into the car park, right hand on his pistol butt. He stayed in one spot listening and watching.

A little young kid walked past him smiling and sipping from a bottle of Viju, he smiled back and looked away. He noticed the kid hesitated so he looked back at the kid. The smile was still there, a knowing smile.

“Did you see the man who ran in here?” Zach asked on a whim.

The kid pointed to Zach’s left.

Zach looked in time to see a red Corolla blast out of a lot and towards the exit. Instinctively, he made a dash for the kid, grabbing him and making it out of the way with about a second to spare before the car blew past them crushing the boy’s half-empty bottle of Viju splashing its content over Zach and the kid.

The guards on duty were shocked out of their routine. Two of them rushing to the road to look at the departing vehicle.

Weyrey!” one shouted.

“Oga, na your pikin?” the other asked concerning the young boy Zach had saved.

Zach looked at the boy, the smile was gone now, he was pale with fear.

“You guys get on the radio and stop that car before it leaves this premises” he barked at them.

“Radio?” they both chorused.

Zach didn’t bother with them. “Get that child to his mother” he shouted as he raced to his car parked in a different car park. There was no way he would catch up with that guy on this premises.

The only possibility was to catch him on the open road.

He jumped into his Volvo, spun it out of the lot and shot towards the exit.

Once on the highway, Zach floored it.

In less than 3 minutes, he spotted the red corolla up ahead, switching lanes and going quite fast. But it was no match for his 3.2L XC90. Soon he was directly behind him.

“Stop motherfucker!” Zach said, flashing his beams and hoping the guy would realise the futility in his efforts, take a cue and stop.

They blew through a roundabout, he saw the corolla skid a little on the approach and then skid a whole lot on exiting. Zach shook his head.

He tried to pull past but the Corolla kept blocking him.

“This is stupid, you should know that!” Zach said, frustrated.

he didn’t want to ram into Corolla, that would cause an accident, so he stayed back. He didn’t even want a scratch on his car.

He took out his white handkerchief, rolled down the window and stuck it out with his left hand. Either the guy didn’t notice, didn’t know what it meant or just didn’t care, for he pulled away even more.

Zach gave up, pulled his hand back in and gunned the engine. “I’m gonna get you” he said.

He hadn’t quite gotten the window back up when the Corolla overtook a commercial bus, tried to get back in front of it in time to avoid another commercial bus, but somehow pulled in too early.

The back of the Corolla struck the front of the bus, the commercial driver responded quickly, swerving to embrace the spin. The Corolla did the opposite, trying to correct against the anti-clockwise spin from the hit.

Zach went wide. Passing both buses, he saw the Corolla ahead still trying to regain control.

“Slow down! Slow down!!” Zach shouted, not minding the futility of his words.

The Corolla suddenly went right, ripping through a mesh fence and slamming into a pile of concrete interlocking bricks with a deafening bang.

“Shit!” Zach said as he went past the accident.

It took a while for him to stop some distance up the road.

By the time he walked to the vehicle a handful good samaritans were on the scene trying to help.

Zach took one look at the cabin of the Corolla and turned around.

“Another dead end” he murmured.

***************************

“Eat your barbecue, madam” Zach said, holding a chicken lap to Zaneta’s closed mouth.

She shook her head furiously.

“I warned you while you were getting these, they were too much, but your hunger won’t let you listen” he said giving up on force-feeding her.

“I was starving” she said lying on his laps.

“Never serve food by the force of your hunger. My mama told me that”

“First I’ve heard of her. Never knew….” she left off chuckling.

“You thought I fell from the sky?” he asked

“You are that awesome”

“Hmm… I wish. She’s late” he said kissing the tips of her fingers.

“And your pops?”

“Late too”

“Pele” she said, pulling him down for a kiss.

A month had flown by, literally, in Zaneta’s eyes. Their relationship had been pretty stable too. She had also succeeded in shutting Edith out, zero response to communication. Her DMs were still ablaze as always but no one came close to what she had with Zach. She would not pretend to be fully taken, after all he hadn’t asked for her commitment and neither had he given his.

What they had was fine. For now. Useful. Comfortable.

She was keeping her options open in a sense, but since she spent most of her spare time with him, when he was available, it was frustrating most other efforts.

In truth she wasn’t sure she was ready for a proper relationship. And still she held back the truth about her uncle from him.

Zach looked across the room at the TV, it was mute, its light cast warm shadowsover the living room. It was a politics program showing. He saw the hashtag #DanbazauMoloku and wondered when she would finally speak up about her relationship with the Opposition VP candidate.

The past month had been quiet for him and he’d begun to relax. Seyi was back to school and was rounding up. Nothing had come out of all of Bizi’s prying for information about the AlphaTrag connection. No one had come on to him too and even the political scene was pretty stable. The candidates were travelling and campaigning and all.

He’d been on a few trips with the Retired General, regular security detail. Nothing out of the ordinary.

It was too still. It was like the calm before the storm hit.

He knew one day soon, he would get that call that would change everything.

He looked down at her, her eyes were closed.

“I can feel your eyes on me”

“Of course you can. Aren’t you a witch?”

She smiled, but kept her eyes shut.

“Can we watch something?”

“Like?”

“Let’s stream something, abeg” she said, sitting up and grabbing the remote control.

“Knock yourself out, I’m going to walk Raiden” he said slipping on his slippers.

“When do you think the trip would be?” she asked as he got up.

“Our trip?” he asked, surprised she brought it up.

“Yeah” she said without looking his way.

“I’m yet to get the exact dates. Trying to get someone who’ll cover for me from one of the other locations. But no one wants to work in Lagos, it seems”

“You can’t blame them now, can you?”

“I guess not”

“So, no dates yet?”

“No”

“Where are we going, sef?” this time she turned to face him.

“That’s a surprise” he said smiling.

“Mr. Romantic” she teased and turned back to her search for something to watch.

Just as he stepped out of the flat, a call came in.

It was Rtd. General Aliu.
