Fola King – Episode 9

Fola pulled up at the nearest bus stop and checked his wristwatch. It was turning out to be longest night of his life. His birthday had been more of a revealing day for him. Break up with Sarah. Peterside returning his cheque. Finding out about Aaima and now being on the run for his life. He dialled Obi’s number. Obi was meant to meet him here. No response. He checked his car locks as he relaxed in his seat. He thought about Aaima. Yelling at her was not his wish but it was necessary to keep her safe and far away from him. He was bad news. Obi would be a better man for Aaima. He adored her too. Fola knew life didn’t work that way. He might not have been a direct recipient of love and emotions but he knew they didn’t always come the way we did want them. If only Aaima would see Obi…and of course, if only he could stop feeling so strongly about her. He looked into his side mirror as a figure approached in the distance. His heart palpitated at the thought of one of the men sent after him catching up with him. He placed his hand on the ignition ready to push it but smart enough not to whine the engines. As the figure drew closer, he knew it was Obi, he pushed the ignition and released the locks for him to get into the car.

Fola moved the car as soon as Obi settled in. “What happened? I thought you said you were going to Greg’s? Didn’t the ambulance drop you there?”

“I left the hospital in the ambulance just like I told you, but I don’t want to talk about Greg now. Just drive.” He replied.

Fola blinked. “I am driving and I am listening. What happened at Greg’s?”

“Fola, drop this matter. We go talk am later.” Obi replied. “How is Aaima?”

Fola clenched his teeth, “She is fine. She is with my mother.”

Obi nodded. “What are we going to do? If it’s Umar coming after you, we are in trouble.”

“I just want to get through this night, Obi. It’s the longest night of my life.” He replied.

Obi exhaled. “So…have you heard anything from Sarah? Is she safe?”

“She should be. I don’t know. I called her, she didn’t answer. Anyway, I have other plans and she can’t even be let in on any of them because it involves screwing her over.” He replied.

Obi blinked. “I don’t understand.”

“I am going to work with Yemi to help Aaima get out of this mess. And that doesn’t favour Sarah at all and knowing the sneaky little girl she is, I am afraid she could do something really stupid.” Fola replied.

Obi cleared his throat.

Fola stared at him. “What is it?”

“Nothing.”

Fola focused on the road. “That is not nothing. What is it?”

“Look, Fola, I just want to sleep. You have started with second-guessing everything everyone says. Fola, its fine.”

Fola nodded. He knew it wasn’t fine. There had to be a reason Obi didn’t stay at Greg’s. He had risked his safety to leave the hospital in an ambulance so he wouldn’t be spotted by anyone, only for him to change his mind. He couldn’t understand why Obi would not want to tell him the reason for his change of plans.

Yemi struggled to stay awake as she struck away on her keyboard and sipped her coffee. She was preparing for her day which would see her do a lot, maybe much more than she had done in the previous weeks. Her door bell went off. Fola couldn’t be at her door. And of course, not Sarah. She panicked. She took a deep breath and turned to her phone as it vibrated. Sarah. She frowned. Why was Sarah coming to her house at this time? She hurried to the door and peeked through the hole before opening the door. “What are you doing here?”

“I am sorry. I had nowhere else to go.” Sarah replied, stepping into the house.

Yemi locked her door after her. “Like I told you, I am not big sister that you can come running to whenever you have issues.”

Sarah nodded. “I can sleep on the couch, I’ll be gone in the morning.”

“Sure you would.” Yemi replied.

Sarah stared at Yemi’s laptop. “What are you doing?”

Yemi closed the laptop. “None of your business.”

“Oh come on Yemi!” Sarah groaned. “For how long are you going to keep treating me like this? We are a team!”

Yemi smiled. “Team? When did I ever give you that liberty?”

“Yemi, I know this whole behaviour works for you, but it doesn’t for me…and I am getting really pi—”

“-Shut it!” Yemi said, cutting her off. “I make the rules around here, lady. You should be glad I am giving you somewhere to lay your head. I advise you sleep and be gone tomorrow morning. I am not your mate and I am not Fola who has given you the liberty to hatch your eggs and grow into a bird. I will cut your wings down and I won’t even bat an eye. So, watch how you talk to me.” She concluded, carrying her laptop.

Sarah clenched her teeth. “Goodnight, Yemi.”

Yemi smiled. “Goodnight.” She replied, leaving for her bedroom.

***

Mrs. King stared at Aaima with a smile. “You know, when Fola’s dad left, I almost thought that I couldn’t raise him alone. I was young, scared and alone.” She started. “But then, every day I spent with my son made me stronger. I didn’t see the need to have anyone in my life but my son and I raised him that way. Emotions made us weak, so we fought through the tides alone. We had each other and that was just enough.” She said, hesitating a little. “For me.”

Aaima stared at the glass of water in her hand to avoid Mrs. King’s gaze. The woman’s beautiful large eyeballs did more than just look at her. They were piercing through her, coming with a subtle plea. Aaima knew this phase pretty much. She knew how the human mind worked. It might have not been the older woman’s direct motive, but she was selling her son to Aaima. Oh well, selling the fact that he was loveable. But, Aaima didn’t need her help to figure that out, she was already swooned by him.

“Aaima?”

Aaima looked up.

Mrs. King smiled. “Where are you?”

“Here.”

The woman shuddered. “As I was saying, Fola is not a monster and even though he must have helped the man who murdered your sister walk, he regrets it. You see, Aaima, the way life is set up, we never know who we would meet and what impact they’ll have on us.”

“I don’t resent him for that.” Aaima said.

Mrs. King stared at her. “Oh? You don’t.”

“I can’t blame a man for doing his job.” She replied.

Mrs. King sat back. “Even when it did involve your life?”

Aaima exhaled. “I don’t know, ma’am. Fola has made some mistakes in his life just like we all have. I made one when I came to Nigeria to visit my sister and that is what has brought this fear upon you. We don’t even know if they are coming to get me here and hurt you in the process.”

Mrs. King smiled. “Aaima, that was not a mistake. That was fate.”

“Fate? Fate is not when you are on the verge of dying.” Aaima replied. “You are at risk because of me, this is not fate.”

Mrs. King chuckled. “I sure can do with some excitement at this stage of my life. It’s been boring and lonely. I can do with some hiding from bad guys and trying to jump into a moving car and maybe break my teeth in the process, or maybe just die. Just die. You know?” She said, laughing. She stopped for a while and stared at the younger lady who had so much fear in her eyes. Her life had only just started, she didn’t need this now. Not like Aaima was the only worried one but someone had to keep the balance. They were both worried for their lives and for Fola who had gone out ‘to find help’ as he had told them. Mrs. King smiled and reached for Aaima’s hand. “Fola has not been to see me in many years. I get monthly allowances that are enough for some families to live on for a year from my son who would not see me because of a silly bet that we both did. I told him the day he was called to bar that he’d lose his first case. I was only kidding. Fola looked me right in the eye and said, ‘Mother, you did not raise a loser. The day I lose my first case is the next time you’ll see.’  I was shocked, I laughed about it but still agreed to the bet because I thought he’d get beaten someday, I mean, even the best do fall. Aaima, Fola is yet to lose a case, the only reason why he is here to see me is because of you…and if that is not fate, I don’t know what else is.”

Aaima swallowed. “I don’t know what to say.”

“Give yourself room to be happy. I know it’s all chaotic right now, but it will be alright and if it’s not alright…it’s not over yet.” Mrs. King replied, smiling. “You know, sometimes I wonder why I never loved another man after Fola’s biological father jilted me. I get so mad at myself whenever I think of my lonely days and nights. I just sit at home, read, write, stare at the Television, sometimes, I drive around…alone. I eat in cafés alone. Alone. I didn’t see the need for friends either, it has always been Fola and I. I regret not allowing my son have so much fun. He didn’t grow up how the normal kid would. He was always there for me…even when I ought to be there for him. These streets toughened him up too early. I would give anything to see Fola happy. I want him to have a normal life. I want him to have a family…to be a good Dad.”

Aaima stared at her. “Fola is his own man.”

Mrs. King nodded. “I know. And that is my fear. But I think he is broken…I hope he is.”

The door opened and Fola walked in with Obi. Aaima smiled as soon as she saw Obi. He was safe. Obi walked over to meet her and she met him in a bear hug. Fola shared a glance with his Mom at this before going into the house.

“Thank God you are fine.” Obi said, releasing her from the hug. “I am so happy to see you, Aaima.”

Aaima managed a chuckle. “Come on, Obi. You are the one who was out there.” She said. “It’s good to see you are safe.”

Aaima looked around but neither Fola nor his Mom was in sight. Her smile faded as she took a seat. Obi took his seat beside her. “Did you see their faces? I mean the men who came after you? I could help identify them if they are the same men that took me.”

“Now I understand why you would not tell me the truth about you. But, I am going to do everything in my power to protect you, okay?” he said, assuring her.

Aaima stared at him. She didn’t deem it fair to him. “Obi…”

He swallowed. “Yeah?”

“I…” she started and stopped almost immediately. “Obi?”

He blinked. “What is it?”

“It’s not you.” She said.

He nodded as he struggled to keep his gaze on her. “Okay…”

She exhaled. “I wish I had these feelings for you. I am sorry.”

He looked away.

“I know the timing is not right, but, I hope you’d understand that you are a great guy and you deserve-”

“-Don’t start.” Obi said, cutting her off. “You are about to start the ‘you deserve the best in world speech and what’s not…and I know it’s meant to make me feel better, but it will only make me feel worse.” He said, forcing a smile.

Aaima smiled back. “I am sorry.”

“It’s fine. Maybe I’ll meet her someday.” He said. “Fola is a lucky guy.”

Aaima swallowed.

Obi nodded with a smile. “Yeah, I could figure that out. Fola is a great guy. He just doesn’t know it.” He said. “You know, we have been friends forever and I’d never want to lose him.”

“Are you giving up for him?” Aaima asked.

Obi shook his head. “You are not even in love with me. There is nothing to fight for. I already lost the fight before having the opportunity to get into the ring.”

Aaima took a deep breath. “Obi, I really wish…”

Obi smiled. “Come on, Aaima…stop wishing. It’s never going to happen. I know when to break my own heart before you can.”

Aaima exhaled. “Come here.” She said, hugging him.

“Yeah, that’s the friend-zone hug.” He said, chuckling.

Fola stared at them as he approached from upstairs. He clenched his teeth in anger and returned upstairs, unnoticed.

***

Mrs. King’s heart skipped a beat as Fola slammed the door after him. “Fola…”

Fola took his seat. “They are happy together. Mom, just leave me alone.”

“Adefolarin.” His mother started as she took her seat beside him. “You might just be overreacting, you know?”

Fola stared at her. “Oh really? Did you see them together?”

Mrs. King managed a smile. “You are jealous.”

“I am not jealous.” He replied.

Mrs. King drew closer to him with a smile. “You are jealous, Fola.”

Fola stared at her as she made faces at him. “Mom, stop it.”

“Admit it, Fola.” She said, wriggling her fingers.

Fola stared at the fingers, he knew what was next. “Mom….don’t.”

Mrs. King ignored him as she tickled him.

“Fine! Fine! I…am…am—jealous!” Fola replied, to break free from his Mom. “Mom!” he groaned. “Are you happy now?”

“Yes, I am.” She replied with a smile. “It’s going to be alright, Fola.”

Fola shrugged. “I don’t know, Mom. It’s been one hell of a night. I just want to sleep. Tomorrow is going to be longer.”

“It’s a good new year for you, Fola. I am the proud of the man you have become.” She said, standing up. “I’ll just let you sleep. Is Obi sleeping in here too?”

Fola frowned. “He can sleep in Aaima’s room for all I care.” He retorted.

Mrs. King chuckled. “I’ll get him up here soon.” She said, heading for the exit.

“Thanks, Mom.”

Mrs King nodded. “Sleep well.”

***

Umar dropped his phone onto his lap and fell back into his bed. He had struggled with finding some sleep in the last hour and so he decided to call his boys to know if they had found Fola King. They had negative answers for him. He was going to kill someone in the morning with the pace at which things were moving. He was further irked by the fact that Yusuf was not returning his call. The idiot must have been asleep. He sighed as he thought of how to ship in his new consignment. Things were not going well for him with the government hot on his trails, looking for any opportunity to nab him. This situation with Aaima looming made things more uncomfortable for him. Umar had some friends in the Police department, he would talk to them in the morning to help alert him if his missing sister-in-law surfaced, this time, he would finish off what he should have done when he had the chance. He was foolish enough to keep her alive and now he wished that he didn’t. He couldn’t be worrying about a stray girl and drugs at the same time. The drugs were his priority. He needed to sort that out first. He sat up and picked up his phone. ‘Someone at Customs should be able to help me.’ He thought to himself before checking his wristwatch. “Normal people are asleep by this time, Umar. Find some sleep.” He urged himself, before dropping back into his bed.

“The deal was for you to get up early enough and be gone before I step out here.” Yemi said, standing over Sarah with a cup of coffee in her hand. “But then, I have gone out and returned. Look at you! Sleeping away precious work time. How do you want Peterside to retain you after your service if you don’t even get up to go to work on time?” she asked.

Sarah groaned as she tried to get up from the couch. “I am not used to sleeping on the couch.”

Yemi chuckled. “Oh Princess! I forgot Fola let you lay in his royal bed.” She said, laughing. “How do you like your new reality?”

Sarah ignored her as she sat up. “What time is it?”

“Eleven am. Do you know how productive this morning has been for me and for every other serious person in Lagos?” Yemi asked, taking a seat.

Sarah sighed. “I’ll just take a shower and we can be on our way to the Police station.”

Yemi laughed. “Did you not hear anything I said? I have already done my early morning errands while you were sleeping away your legal career.”

Sarah exhaled. “Okay, so what’s the status at the police station?”

“Same as yesterday. They should start circulating Aaima’s missing photos by the end of the week.” Yemi replied.

Sarah stared at Yemi intensely. “I thought you said that they would already have done that.”

Yemi smiled. “Are you not familiar with the Police system in Nigeria?”

“Rubbish! I know how persuasive you can be, Yemi.” Sarah replied.

Yemi sat back. “I don’t sleep with people for favours. You do better at that.”

Sarah groaned as she rose to her feet. “Show me some respect!”

“People earn respect! And you my dear, you can’t earn any.” Yemi replied and picked up her bag. “I am heading to the office to see if there is any progress from the Police. They could be proactive too.” She said, rising to her feet. “Gather your things, I’ll love to lock my door.”

Sarah took a deep breath. “Can I just shower?”

“No. Please leave.” Yemi replied.

Sarah shook her head. “You are unbelievable.”

“My house. My rules.” Yemi said with a smile.

***

“Good morning.” Aaima said as she walked into the kitchen with her plate from breakfast. “Why didn’t you join us for breakfast? And you disappeared last night too…”

Fola ignored her as he washed the plates.

Aaima dropped her plates by the sink. “Can I clean my plates?”

He stepped away from the sink handing her the sponge.

“I see we are not talking.” She continued as she started washing her plates. “Your Mom said you made breakfast?”

He rolled his eyes.

Aaima rinsed the plate and dropped it to dry. “You know you can at least say good morning too?”

Fola returned to the sink and continued with the other dishes.

“What do you want from me, Fola?” she asked.

He continued with the dishes.

Aaima was done. She exhaled and walked out of the kitchen.

Fola’s phone rang. He dried his hands and pulled it out. Yemi. He answered. “Hey!”

“Fola, get your girl down to the station to file her statement.” She replied.

Fola shook his head. “I…I can’t be there. I am trying to stay totally disconnected from the case.”

“Ah yes! I forgot that part. I am coming for her.” She replied. “Are you home? I can be there in five minutes.”

“No. My mother’s. I’ll send you the address.” He replied. “Thank you, Yemi.” He said, hanging up.

***

Sarah stormed into Greg’s office. “Listen to me, you underachiever!”

Greg stared at her. “What has come over you?”

“You threw me out of your house in the dead of the night and I am going to get back at you for it.” She started.

He hissed. “You are late to work and Peterside has asked of you. That would worry me more if I was you.” He replied and focused on the brief before him.

“Did he…he ask of me?” she asked.

He scoffed. “Don’t you have friends that you have probably slept with for favours around here? They can confirm that.”

She blinked. Peterside was stern. She was in trouble if he was asking of her regarding her lateness…but what if Yemi had already done the needful? A smile lurked round her face as she turned to Greg. “See you later.”

***

Sarah adjusted her button as she got to Mr Peterside’s office. This was her closest shot at glory. She was going to claim it. “Good day Sir, you sent for me.”

“I understand you are a corps member here, right?” he asked as he shut his laptop.

She nodded. “Yes, Sir.”

“I pick certain days to do my rounds, so as to know the commitment level of my staff. You have been found wanting.” He said.

She swallowed. “I…I don’t understand.”

“You were late to work today. In fact, I hear you clocked in after noon.” He said.

Sarah stepped forward. “I had a serious emergency that I had to attend to.”

“I often find emergencies more believable when you are maybe in the emergency room. I have called your Local Government Inspector and reported this incident. You are suspended for the next one week.”

“Sir?!” Sarah said as she gaped.

Mr Peterside nodded. “If you have any complaints, speak to your Local Government Inspector.” He said. “Have a good day.”

Sarah exhaled as she walked out.

Mr Peterside stared at his phone and dialled. “Hey, Yemi, it’s done.”

***

Fola walked into the living room. “Are you ready?” he asked. “Yemi would be here to pick you. She is your attorney. Is that clear?”

Aaima stayed quiet.

Fola cleared his throat. “Do you remember everything I have briefed you about? Is there anything that is unclear to you?”

She ignored him.

Fola frowned. “Aaima!”

She rose to her feet and stared at him. “Are you angry? I hope you are, because this is how it feels to be ignored.” She said and turned away to leave.

Fola pulled her back and close to him. He stared at her as he could feel her chest pounding against his. He leaned into her and kissed her.

Two Weeks To Go – Episode 7 (Finale)

YVONNE
Life could be funny, right? It gives you something so beautiful like love and then it tells you, you can’t have it. That’s a tease. And in reality, that’s not even funny, that’s annoying. Why bring us together if you really didn’t want to give us a ‘forever’? Or is it actually true that life doesn’t give you anything? Maybe you just take it. Ade is laying in there and I am out here staring at his ring on my finger and I am wondering what we are doing. It all seems like one big joke and no one is willing to stop. Ade asked me to marry him and I said ‘yes’. I couldn’t have said ‘no’ to the only man I have ever imagined my life with since the day I met him. We have not been allowed to see him for three days now as the cycle has been intensified in the last days. Difficult times…difficult days. I have been praying for the days to come easy and the moments to pass slowly. None is happening. It is one big rush and it doesn’t seem like it’ll stop. I am scared…the last days are the desperate days.
***
“Yvonne!” Tunji said, tapping her.
She stared at him dumbly. “Yeah?!”
He chuckled. “I have been calling you forever.”
She exhaled. She couldn’t have heard him. She was lost in her thoughts and wishes. “I am sorry.”
“It’s fine. Want something to eat?” he asked, settling down beside her.
She shook her head.
He nodded and took a bite of his chocolate. “So, when are they going to let us in?” he asked.
Yvonne was surprised. “Shouldn’t you know that?”
“I don’t. Father is not telling me anything. I thought he’d at least talk to you. It’s been three days already.” Tunji replied.
Yvonne panicked. She had not heard anything about Ade’s health or seen him in the last three days. “Shouldn’t we talk to your father?”
“I haven’t seen him and I think they moved Ade from that room already.” Tunji replied. “I was tired searching for him so I came to sit and that’s when I found you here.”
“Is there something they are not telling us?” she asked.
Tunji stared at her. “Is it what I am thinking?”
Yvonne couldn’t dwell on the negative thoughts that clouded her mind. They seemed real too. That part scared her.
Doctor Jones approached them. “Hello.”
Yvonne hurried over to him. “Where is Ade?”
“Erm…we had to change his room for close monitoring.” He replied.
“Can we see him yet?” Tunji asked.
Doctor Jones stared at them. “Right now, I…I don’t think he can actually see you.”
“Why not?” Yvonne asked.
He blinked. “Ade is…he is quite critical.”
Yvonne looked away as tears welled up in her eyes. “I thought you were going to save him.”
“We are trying, Yvonne. It’s…it’s not so easy for me either. But these are really crucial days.” He replied.
“Are we hopeful, Dad?” Tunji asked.
Doctor Jones stared at them. “I can’t tell you not to hope.” He replied with a nod. “I am hoping too.”
“Doctor Jones! O.R!!!” A nurse called to him.
Doctor Jones exhaled. “I have to go now.” He said and walked away.
Yvonne slid into her seat. “Ade says he is going to marry me. He says we are going to have three kids.” She said with a soft chuckle. “We are not decided on the gender yet, but I’d love two boys and a girl. She’d be their little princess. That’d be lovely, right?” she concluded, turning to Tunji.
Tunji took a deep breath. “Yeah…it would.” He replied.
Yvonne managed a smile. “He’ll make it. You’ll see.”
Tunji blinked as he looked away.
“Hey, Yvonne.” Charles said, joining them.
Yvonne stared at him.
“How is Ade?” he asked.
She shrugged. “They aren’t letting us see him.”
Charles sighed before taking a seat. “I have to talk to you about something, Yvonne.”
She stared at him. “I really don’t have listening ears at the moment.”
“How does an endorsement deal of two hundred million sound to your ear?” he asked.
Tunji smiled. “Bro, what is that?”
Yvonne chuckled. “What are you doing?”
“Trying to get you to smile.” He replied with a smile. “I see it worked.”
Yvonne shrugged. “You tried.”
“Ade’s trick. He told me to try that on you whenever you feel sad.” He replied.
Yvonne sighed. “I don’t get this new partnership between you and Ade. First the engagement and now, silly jokes.”
“Actually he is preparing me as a stand-in for when he is gone.” Charles replied looking serious.
Yvonne’s smile faded. “Was that meant to be a joke? It is not funny.”
“I actually thought I would do a better job as a stand in guy for Ade.” Tunji started. “I am his brother. I know how to crack you up.”
Yvonne turned to Tunji sharply. “What is this?”
“Chill…it’s not that serious.” Charles said, laughing.
Yvonne hit him in the waist. “Don’t play with me like that.”
“I am not sorry. You are smiling. That’s good enough.” He replied.
Yvonne smiled. She had not found a genuine smile in a while and even though the scenario around her smile wasn’t the best, she was glad she had found a reason to smile.
“Ade will be fine.” Charles said. “He is fighting. He wants to marry you.” He added.
Yvonne smiled. “He will marry me.”
“Anyway, the endorsement deal is real!” Charles added.
Tunji clapped. “Money time.”
“We need to sign the deal this evening.” He said. “I set up the meeting not too far from here, you’ll get a change of clothes and we can come back here.” He concluded.
Yvonne nodded. “I can use the distraction.”
“AND A LOT OF MONEY!” Tunji chipped in playfully.
They all laughed and then locked in an embrace.
***
Ade pulled his window blinds back and stared into the darkness of the city. He was no longer counting the days that went by. He just wanted to see Yvonne but they won’t let him. He felt his dose had been increased as he felt more tired as the sessions came. He had missed his podcasts and his audience. He felt to record once more…a pressing urge to say something.
The door opened and his father walked in. “Ade.”
“Dad.”
Doctor Jones took his seat. “You’ve got a session soon.”
“Is this some unorthodox method because I feel really tired and I don’t want to spend my last days like this?” he asked, taking his seat.
Doctor Jones rubbed his palms against the surface of his trousesr. They were sweaty as he felt nervous. “Stop talking about your last days.”
“I can’t help it.” Ade replied. “Why isn’t Yvonne here?” he asked. “I really want to see her. I appreciate the fact that this whole treatment has bought me more time with her, but I really don’t want to go without seeing her. I’ll never forgive you, Dad.”
“Stop blackmailing me, son. Yvonne will be here in the morning. She left to attend to some matters.” He replied.
Ade took a deep breath. “Am I getting better?”
“Do you feel better?” Doctor Jones asked.
Ade hated this. “Dad, you guys know better. Just let me know already. I told Yvonne I was going to marry her. I want to marry her.”
“Then marry her.” He replied.
Ade groaned. “I won’t be doing it here.”
Doctor Jones chuckled. “Doing what?!”
“Oh….Dad!” Ade gaped. “I meant marrying her in here, not what you were thinking!”
Doctor Jones laughed. “How do you know what I was thinking if you weren’t in the same vein of thoughts.”
“Ugh!” Ade scoffed. “Dad.”
Doctor Jones smiled. “You are going to be fine, Son. I believe.”
“It’s your duty to say that to me. You are my father. If I wasn’t your son, you’d have been blunt with me.” Ade replied.
Doctor Jones swallowed. Part of it was true. But, he believed so strongly that God was going to do something. Maybe he’d have mercy and just help them out. They were running out ideas.
“Am I right?” Ade asked.
Doctor Jones rose to his feet. “The nurses will soon be here for you. Do you need a book?”
Ade shook his head. “I am fine.”
Doctor Jones and made it to the exit.
Ade clenched his teeth. “What if I don’t make it to remission?” he asked, stopping his father in his tracks.
Doctor Jones took a deep breath and turned to him. “What if you do?” His father asked.
***
Yvonne was a lot richer than last night. On a normal day, that was enough reason for her to grin at the breaking of a new day, but you really can’t smile when all is really not well. She picked her wristwatch from her bedside and sighed. Ten in the morning. She had to return to the hospital and hope that maybe today, she’d be able to see Ade.
Her phone buzzed. It was Charles.
“Hi, Charles.” She started.
CHARLES: “Hey…how are you?”
“I don’t know.”
CHARLES: “Please be fine.”
“Thanks. I am off to the hospital later on. See you there?”
CHARLES: “Sure. I’ve got you.”
Yvonne hung up and buried her head in her hands. She prayed in her heart. That was all she could afford, she was too weak to cry and too frail to talk. Her heart did all the crying out loud and that was where her strength did lie. God had to listen to her.

Tunji ran into his father in the lobby. “Dad, what’s going on? I just saw Ade being moved back to his room in a stretcher.”
“Really? I…I haven’t been in the hospital. I went out.” He replied.
Tunji ran his hand across his forehead. “Something must have happened.”
“Tunji, please calm down. I’ll go find out.” The older man replied and turned to leave.
Tunji held him back.  “Dad, I…I just wanted to say that I hold nothing against you even if Ade goes…but I just feel, I think you should let him have some normal days with Yvonne. Maybe it is time to let go, Dad. I don’t blame you for anything. I…I don’t want him to be a lab rat who never makes it out.” Tunji stuttered.
Doctor Jones exhaled. “Ade is not my experiment.”
“I know, but I am scared. I…I know Ade would love to go down well.” He replied.
Doctor Jones stared at his son. “Try to be optimistic, Son. I could use your strength too.”
“I am trying.” Tunji protested.
His Father nodded. “Try harder. I have to go now.” He replied and walked away.
Tunji gripped his head as he thought hard of the maybes and what ifs that clouded him.
“Tunji!”
He turned to see Yvonne. “Yeah?”
“What’s going on?”
He shook his head. “I don’t know.”
“What do you mean by you don’t know.”
Tunji blinked. “I just saw them take Ade back into his room in stretcher. I am confused.”
Yvonne’s heart skipped. “Where’s your Dad?”
“He went to find out.” He replied. “There is something going on and I don’t know if this is the end.” He said.
Yvonne was silent. There were no words.

Doctor Musa shut the door after Doctor Jones. “Please, sit.”
“Why do I have to sit? You can talk to me!” An agitated Doctor Jones replied.
Doctor Musa exhaled. “Fine.” He said and stepped back.
“Musa! Talk, man!” Doctor Jones yelled.
Doctor Musa handed him a chart. “Have a look.” He said and walked over to the monitor. “You’d be amazed what we found.”
“What’s in it?” he asked.
Doctor Musa turned to him. “The cells…the movement of the cells.”
Doctor Jones stared at the chart. “It’s empty, Musa.”
“My point exactly, Jones.” He replied with a smile. “Remission.”
Doctor Jones stared at the chart again. “What are you saying?”
“That is the most recent MRI. It was conducted a few hours ago. I just sent him back to his room after confirming it.”
Doctor Jones eyes went wet in an instant as he struggled to find traces of a mass on the chart. “Remission.” He whispered. “Remission.”
Doctor Musa joined him. “Ade is going home. No more Chemo. Ade is in remission, Jones. He made it. Of course, we have to do the routine check-ups, but heck! This is good news!”
Doctor Jones felt chills run down his spine and a trickle of tear beads on his cheeks. “Are you serious?”
“Congratulations.” He replied with smiles.
Doctor Jones couldn’t hold back his tears as they flowed in excitement.
“It’s okay.” His counterpart said, hugging him. “Go break the news to him.”

Ade turned to the door as it opened. “Yvonne?”
Yvonne shut the door after her and joined him on the bed.
“How did you get in here?” he asked.
She smiled faintly. “It’s not a prison, Ade.”
“It was starting to feel like one.” He replied.
She nodded. “I understand how you must have felt.”
“How I feel.” He corrected.
She managed a smile. “So, we never actually concluded on how many kids we are going to have when we get married.”
Ade stared at her. He didn’t want to give her any hopes. “I…I really-”
“Pick a number.” She said, cutting him short. “I’d love three anyways…so pick three.”
He smiled. “Three.”
“That’s a step in the right direction.” She replied. “So, where are we going to live? What kind of apartment?”
Ade sighed. It was high time he played along with her. If this was going to make her happy, he wasn’t going to stop the flow. “I’d like a house with a creek beside it, where I could actually teach our kids to fish.”
“Well, that’s a dream…I don’t know if that’s going to happen yet.” She replied, smiling. “Maybe when we are old and rusty, we could actually buy one of those homes and catch fishes together.
Ade stared at her. “Yvonne-”
“Okay, let’s talk about tomorrow. What are we doing tomorrow?” she asked.
He swallowed. “Stop it.” He said.
She stared at him. “Why?”
“Don’t do this. Don’t start talking about the best things when we are not sure of them.” He said.
She smiled. “Oh my darling.”
Ade clenched his teeth. “Don’t do that.”
“What?!” she asked, almost laughing.
He sniffed. “Don’t call me nice names that won’t last forever.”
She smiled. “This is forever, Ade.”
“Yvonne…”
She smiled. “There’s a place called home. It finds you.”
“I found you?” he asked.
She nodded. “This is our forever, Ade.”
He looked away.
“You are in remission.” She said.
Ade’s heart skipped. He turned to her in an instant.
“Ade, you are going home.” She said, wiping the tears in her eyes.
He shook his head, unable to believe her. “No…No…you are joking.”
“We are going home.” She replied.
The door opened and Doctor Jones walked in with Tunji. Ade knew it was true. They were smiling. He turned to Yvonne. “I want five kids.” He said, with his voice breaking.
She laughed as they hugged.
Doctor Jones turned to Tunji. “Are you going to wait in line for your own hug?”
Tunji wrapped his hand round his father. “Dad, I am sorry.”
“I love you, son.” His Father replied.
Ade stared at Yvonne. “I love you, Yvonne.”
“And I love you.” She replied as she kissed his forehead.

YEARS GONE…
Yvonne
“Mom!!!”
I took a peek through the window as I cleaned the plates. The boys were back.
“I really would like to go out with them sometime, Mom.”
I turned to my little girl. “You’ll have your moment, little girl.”
“Girls play football too, you know?” she said as she read from a book.
I smiled.
“George thinks he is a better player than I am.” She protested, closing the book. “I don’t believe him. He hasn’t even seen me play, so how does he know he is better than I am?” she asked.
I smiled at her. “You don’t even play.”
“If you let me, I will.” She replied.
Ade chuckled as he walked in with George. “Is she still talking about football?”
“Dad, we both know Derin can’t play.” George replied. “Mom, I scored against Dad…twice.” He added, staring at me with a smile.
Ade turned to Derin. “We are going to the mall, ladies.”
“Dad…but you said we were doing that together.” George replied.
I turned to George. “It’s time for your homework. You chose football over your homework.” I said, taking off my gloves. “Derin, go get your bag.”
She hurried out of the kitchen.
George frowned.
“Can we do the assignment when we all get back?” Ade pleaded.
I rolled my eyes. “Well, he has got to make a choice. You either stay back and do his homework or forfeit our family vacation.”
Ade smiled.
“I’ll do my homework.” He replied, leaving the kitchen.
Ade stared at me with a smile. “That was an interesting suggestion, considering we’d never leave him at home for vacation.”
“A mother knows this things.” I replied as I ran my hand through his shirt.
He smiled. “You do know you still owe me some children?” he asked, chuckling. “We just have two.”
I bit my lips. “Compromise.” I replied and walked out of the kitchen.
“Seriously?!” Ade groaned after me.

Two Weeks To Go – Episode 5

Hi guys, i am deeply sorry we couldn’t publish Episode 5 last week. Please bear with us. Here it is today

Yvonne sighed as she read from the dailies. The media had now taken particular interest in her since she started accompanying Ade to his Chemotherapy sessions and they adorned their socialite pages. She was tired of it, but it would not stop. Her grand exit from the planet was only a day away, but she had not yet figured out how she would slip away from Ade. He was making progress with his treatment and was livelier whenever she was around him. Moreover, she was already into him. She had tried to convince her head not to use the word ‘love’…although she knew there were a few things she couldn’t hide from herself. Ade didn’t know much about her to worry about her like she did about him and she was sure about that. She was sure he didn’t even know her birthday was the next day. Maybe he adored her like every other person, or maybe he was just sensitive towards her because it was typical of him to be kind. She had different assumptions playing scripts in her mind…it took her on a more enthralling journey than her recent films had swayed her. She was paying Ade a visit in his rest period…hopefully her last. She had thought it would be wise not to show up at his place today and just slip away…but she really didn’t know how to say goodbye. The last number of days she had spent with Ade had given her some hope at finding a good reason to live, but when your reason to live is racing against life…you find reasons to think maybe it is not worth it after all.
She leaned against the door and straightened the paper out as she read. Her phone buzzed. Charles was on the Caller ID. Her manager had been trying to track her down to get her to do a photoshoot to no avail. A wry smile lurked around her lips as she prepared to answer his call.
CHARLES: Hey, what’s up?
She smiled faintly. “What is it, Charles?”
“Everything is set for the shoot. Where you at?” he asked.
Yvonne peeped outside her glass, listening to the howling of the dogs in the distance. She was parked outside Ade’s apartment. She would not bother telling the truth to Charles as he would make a fuss over how he had spent the ‘last days of his life trying to get all set for the party’. As far as Yvonne was concerned, she wasn’t having a birthday party. It was more like a send-forth.
“Yvonne?” Charles called.
She sighed. “Look, Charles, I am not coming for the photoshoot.”
“What? We start the party at midnight!” he argued.
She nodded as she took a deep breath. “I know. I have to show up for that.” She replied.
“So what do I do now?” he asked.
“Cancel the shoot.” She replied and hung up.
There was a light knock on the side glass. She turned to see Tunji brimming with smiles. “Hi.” He mouthed.
She opened the door. “I…I was just going to come in.” she started.
“Your car has been parked here for about thirty minutes now. So, except if you have been planning on coming in for about thirty minutes, I’ll say something is up.” He rambled.
She smiled faintly and held out the paper before him. “They won’t stop talking about your brother and I.”
“It’s a good thing. Ade is enjoying it.” He said with a soft chuckle.
Yvonne smiled, opening the door. “How is he today?”
“He has puked a few times. I guess he is pretty irritated.” He replied.
Her face fell. “Maybe he needs some rest. I could come back.”
“He already saw you from his window.” He replied, closing the door after Yvonne. “I don’t think anything brings him down when you are around.”
Yvonne flushed. She was flattered…not unusual for this situation. She followed as Tunji led the way.
***
Ade ran his hand over his scalp as he stood before the mirror. He stared at the reflection of the black suit on his bed through his mirror and then smiled faintly.
“Guess who I found.” Tunji announced as he pushed the door open with Yvonne following quickly.
Ade was startled.
She smiled. “Hi, Ade.”
“Hey. You…you didn’t tell me you were coming.” Ade mumbled as he gathered the suit from his bed and fixed it into the wardrobe.
Tunji winked mischievously at Yvonne.
“How do you feel today?” she asked.
Ade didn’t feel so well that day. He was unusually nauseated. His Dad and the other doctors had told about the side effects of Chemotherapy and signs to look out for in case he wasn’t feeling better. Right now, he didn’t feel better but Yvonne couldn’t know that.
“Ade…” Yvonne called as she watched him take a seat on the bed.
He managed a smile. “I am doing fine.”
“Okay…”Yvonne stressed, joining him on the bed. “Are you ready for the next cycle?”
Ade touched his scalp. “I don’t have much to lose…next cycle is in two days. I still have a rest day tomorrow…I’d like to enjoy it.”
Tunji cleared his throat. “I’ll go grab a bite in the kitchen.” He said and walked out.
“Yvonne, how are you doing?” Ade asked.
She smiled. “I am the one who looks fine.”
“But are you fine?” he asked.
Yvonne nodded with a smile. “Better than ever, Ade. Better than ever.”
“Really?” he asked.
She wore her smile proudly. “What could possibly be wrong with me? You ask this question every day you see me.” She said, chuckling.
“If I was psychic, I’d read your mind.” He replied. “Do you like my hair? No, my scalp.”
Yvonne smiled. “Would it count if I told you I did not like it?”
He nodded.
“Well, I don’t like it.” She said. “I love it.” She emphasized.
Ade smiled. “You have a way of making me feel good.”
“You do much more for me.” She replied.
Ade chuckled. “Do I?”
She nodded and then took a deep breath. “I have this very urgent trip to make.”
“Okay…” Ade slurred.
She nodded. “I leave tonight. Business is involved.”
“Okay…” he continued, staring at her. “Are you going to be back?”
Yvonne was silent. She didn’t know if a lie would be appropriate, but she really wanted some respite. She was already finding it here with him…but then, what if she wanted too much from him? What if he was this friendly with everyone…and she wasn’t so special after all? Her biggest fear was ‘what if he didn’t care about her enough’…what if he didn’t love her? She wasn’t going to risk it.
“You are not returning, right?” he asked.
Yvonne smiled. “I need to use the bathroom.”
“It’s down there.” Ade said.
She nodded and walked down the room.
Ade grabbed his beanie cap and fixed it over his head.
Yvonne returned almost immediately. “We should take a walk. You’ll need it.”
“Of course.” He replied and followed her.

YVONNE’S BIRTHDAY: HOUSE – 11:50PM
Yvonne slipped away from the crowd as the noise pulsed late into the night. She didn’t have much time left…she had ten minutes to go on her watch. It made her nervous.
“Yvonne!” Charles called, gripping her arm as she made for the stairs.
She sighed. “What do you want?”
“There is a party going on around you.” He replied, releasing her hand.
She nodded with a smile. “I can see that. I just want to use the bathroom.”
“Oh. Okay. I’ll get the cake.” He said. “We have less than ten minutes to go.” He confirmed from his wristwatch.
“Yeah…Goodbye.” Yvonne replied.
Charles chuckled and walked away.
As Yvonne closed the door behind her in the bathroom, her heart raced faster than normal. She was indeed scared. She stared at the revolver and it beckoned to her. She was tired of everything…her spotlight had turned into one loud silence and misery for her. Nothing else made sense…Ade was the only difference to her life.
She slipped into the tub, taking deep breaths. She looked through her journal for the last time and her most recent write up – she had dedicated it to Ade.
She stared at her wristwatch as the long hand looked to touch twelve and announce her birthday. She set her finger on the trigger and placed the gun to her head. Her hands did not tremble but her eyes were wet. “Three…two…One!” she said as she shut her eyes.
“Happy Birthday!”
The gun dropped from her hand, clattering into the tub as she turned.
Ade knelt before her. “Yvonne…” he called, wiping her tears. “It’s okay…It’s alright, Yvonne.”
“What are you doing here?” she asked as she wrapped her arms around him.
“It’s your birthday, silly. I had to say hello.” He replied with a smile.
She sighed. “I don’t want to be here anymore.” She replied. “I have got nothing worth it here.”
Ade smiled faintly. “I care about you, Yvonne…and maybe a little too much.”
“You don’t understand, Ade…”
Ade stroked her hair. “I like your hair…it’s better than mine.”
“Stop it.” She replied as she pulled off his beanie cap.
Ade took a deep breath. “You have been here for me in the past two weeks, Yvonne and you mean a lot to me. I don’t know if it is too early, but I can’t get you out of my heart.”
“Don’t!” she said, abruptly.
Ade stared at her. “Don’t…”
“Don’t try to get me out of your heart.” She replied, with pleading eyes.
Ade smiled. “It’s not like I can…you already set your place in it.”
Yvonne chuckled.
“Stay with me, Yvonne. You are worth it…you are worth it and you are so worth it…and I love you.” He said. “I can’t believe I just those words.”
“Did you mean them?” she asked.
Ade smiled and leaned over to kiss her.
The door opened and a crowd joined them. “Happy birthday!!!!” They cheered.
Ade placed a hand over the gun as he pulled away from the kiss.
Charles cleared his throat on seeing Yvonne and Ade. “Happy birthday, Yvonne…Happy birthday.”
Yvonne watched the looks that was cast on her and Ade by the other people in the room and smiled faintly. “Thank you all. We will be down shortly.” She announced.
They slowly departed the room leaving Charles in the room.
“Erm….Ade, you didn’t tell me you were coming up to take her away from the rest of us at midnight.” He joked.
“What better way to wish a beautiful woman a happy birthday than to be with her in private?” Ade asked.
“I guess you are right.” Charles said, grinning as he excused them.
Yvonne sighed as Ade picked the gun out of the tub. “Thank you.” She said.
“You might want to return this.” He said, handing her the gun.
She stared at him. “Maybe we could stay here forever?”
“I would love that, but we have a party to get to.” Ade replied, helping her out of the tub.
“I’d have to change my cloth.” She replied, leading Ade into the bedroom.
Ade smiled as she gaped at the gown laid out on her bed. “Happy birthday.”
“You got this for me?” she asked, feeling the dress.
He nodded. “I thought it would look good on you.”
“Thank you, Ade.” She replied.
“You are welcome.” Ade said. “Don’t fire Charles for letting me into the room. I wanted to surprise you.” He added.
She smiled. “I am glad he let you in.” She replied.
“Have you let me in?” Ade asked.
Yvonne smiled. “Yes.”

2 WEEKS GONE
Yvonne watched Ade as he read from a book during one of his chemotherapy cycles from the window blinds. She wasn’t sure if the Chemo was helping or hurting him as he looked pale after every treatment and had started spending his rest periods within the hospital’s walls. The Doctors had placed him under close watch due to his reaction to the side effects of the treatment. She had stared at him for about an hour but couldn’t muster the courage to go into the room. Every passing day seemed exhausting for Ade and she was running out of ideas on how to be there for him.
“You just need to go in.” Tunji said, nudging her in the waist as he joined her by the window blinds. “He still looks the same.”
Yvonne nodded. “He has been in there for about an hour, he hasn’t looked up from the Novel yet.”
“Maybe the Novel interests him.” He replied.
She sighed. “I just wish he could have his rest days at home. In the past two weeks, he has been holed up in here.”
“Perhaps it’s for the best.” He replied.
Dr Jones joined them at the window. “Don’t you want to go in there?” he asked them.
Tunji turned to Yvonne. “Yvonne…”
“He doesn’t look okay.” Yvonne protested.
Dr Jones shrugged. “We are all hoping for the best, right?”
Yvonne was more than hoping. She was expecting. She wanted the best with Ade. She was in love with him. She couldn’t watch him slip away. Without another word to the other men she walked into the room and took Ade’s hand.
Dr Jones smiled at Tunji. “Love, they say is an amazing therapy.”
“Love? What do you know about love, Dad?” He asked, almost bluntly.
The older man chuckled. “I thought we had made up.”
Tunji looked away.
“So, why are you still single? Your brother has got a good woman in there.” Dr Jones asked, leading Tunji away from the window.
Tunji leaned against the wall. “Right now, we should be more worried about Ade than about a woman he likes.”
“Yvonne is instrumental in his recovery stage. I’d be more worried about her than about him.” His father replied. “As long as Yvonne is here, all I see is Ade fighting for more.” He added.
Tunji nodded. “I guess you are right.”
“Of course, I am.” He replied.
Tunji blinked. “Dad, do you miss her?”
Dr Jones looked away. “Do we have to talk about this?”
“Yes. I miss her too…and I think Ade does too…you don’t always have to hurt alone. I know you shut us out and you have hurt alone for a long time, but we can do this together.”
Dr Jones managed a chuckle. “It’s been a long time, Tunji. I am fine.”
“But I am not.” Tunji replied.
Dr Jones sighed as he stared at his son. “Tunji…”
“I still I miss my mother…and I think about it all the time and I am scared that God wants to play us again. He wants to take Ade away from us.” Tunji said.
Dr Jones swallowed. “He has Mom already, right? He doesn’t need Ade. Too many people will hurt if he takes Ade away. He can have me. I am worthless. I am fat. Horrible and worthless.”
“Stop it!” Dr Jones cut in, pulling Tunji close to him. “You are worth it! You are my son and I love you…don’t ever forget that.”
“Dad, it’s so hard to feel appreciated.” He said, pulling away. “Look at Ade, all he has to do is smile and he captivates anyone. He doesn’t have to make efforts to be loved. He even got someone like Yvonne crazy about him.”
Dr Jones shook his head with pity. “Oh poor boy…you don’t even know what you have. You are so handsome. I just wish you’d see it.” He said as he wiped a tear drop from his eyes.
“You are only saying that to make me feel better.” Tunji replied.
Dr Jones took a deep breath. “I want to take you somewhere. It’s a place I go when it gets so loud inside my head.”
Tunji and sighed and walked with him.
***
Ade laid back in his chair and passed the Novel to Yvonne. “I hope you love it.”
Yvonne smiled as she took the book from him. She was glad he finally paid her some attention since she stepped into the room. She gaped as she looked through the pages of the Novel. “It’s in Spanish.”
Ade smiled. “I know.”
“Do you understand Spanish?” she asked.
He smiled ruefully. “No.”
“So what were you reading?” she asked, taking a seat.
He shrugged. “I was focusing.”
“Focusing?” she probed.
He nodded. “I tried to imagine what the author could be saying.”
“Why didn’t you just get the English version?” she asked.
“And spoil my excitement? No way.” He replied.
She ran her hand across his beanie cap. “I love you, Ade.”
“My Yvonne…” he stressed and pulled her close.
Yvonne gasped and tried to fight back her tears. “Are you going to feel better?” she asked.
Ade chuckled. “Remission is the goal, right?”
“I am scared.” She replied. “I don’t want to lose you.”
He smiled faintly. “I am sticking by you till the end.”
“Really?”
He nodded. “Of course. My end is uncertain, remember?” he said with a chuckle.
She nudged him slightly. “Stop kidding.”
“I love you, Yvonne. I love you so much it hurts…” he said, kissing her forehead.
Yvonne smiled. “Ade, please be fine.”
“I am trying my best.” He replied. “And as long as you are here, I stay fighting.” He replied.
She took a deep breath. He was reassuring and maybe that was enough for the moment, but she needed some real progression. She needed a miracle.
“Yvonne…would you marry me?” Ade asked.
She laughed. “Great joke!”
“It’s not a joke. I love you…you love me. What’s the problem?” he asked.
She smiled. “Love is not enough.”
“Don’t I know that?” he asked, taking deep breaths.
She blinked as she stared at him. “Ade…Ade…”
Ade was silent. His eyes popped as he panted heavily.
“Ade!!!” Yvonne yelled and leaped over to the emergency bell. She buzzed it and hurried over to him. “Ade.”
Ade burst into an awkward laugh.
Yvonne frowned. “Not funny!” she shouted.
“Oh babe, you were so scared.” He replied, cuddling her in his arms
The door flung open and Doctor Musa rushed in with two Nurses. He stopped on observing the atmosphere. “What is going on here? Is this the emergency?”
“I guess so…”Ade cooed.
Doctor Musa smiled and checked his wristwatch. “About thirty minutes more. You are looking better today, Ade.” He said and walked out with the nurses.
“I won’t forgive you for that, Ade.” She replied through clenched teeth.
He grinned. “Oh, you will!”
Yvonne sighed. She loved it here…it was peaceful even in the chaos that surrounded Ade’s health.
“I know what you are thinking…” Ade started. “How did I fall in love with this guy, right?” he asked.
Yvonne smiled. “Not exactly. I have stopped asking myself that question a long time ago.”
“Really?”
She nodded. “All I do now is enjoy the peace and tranquillity I find with you…all I do is revel in the fact that finding you meant I found a home. This is the only place I have felt like me.”
Ade took a deep breath. “I love you too.”
***
Dr Jones closed the door behind Tunji. “This is it.”
Tunji looked around him. “Church.”
“I know it’s not what you think, but all I have ever had to do is sit and talk about it to God.” Dr Jones replied.
Tunji stepped away from him. “What does this do for you?”
“I feel lighter.” He replied.
Tunji sighed. “It won’t make me weigh less.”
“Of course not. A good diet plan might do that for you.” Dr Jones replied.
Tunji chuckled.
“Take a moment, son.” He said as he watched Tunji. “I’ll be outside.” He added and stepped out.
Tunji sighed as he approached the altar. He had gone to church as a boy. He had prayed…maybe time drew him away from God. Or maybe he was just angry at everything. He was sure he had his fair share of life, but they were never the best part…maybe some other people had it worse. But all he wanted was good health for Ade and maybe he was asking for too much, but still he would.
He took a deep breath and knelt down to pray.

Clandestine – Episode 8

Happy December, everybody. Enjoy Episode 8.

Alex lingered by the door as he watched Lola gather her clothes into a bag. He took deep breaths intermittently as he watched her hurry while packing the bags. His father-in-law might be one of the wisest men he knew, but he had started to doubt the efficiency of this new strategy. Lola was packing and she wasn’t looking back. She had shed a few tears downstairs moments earlier and run up immediately to gather her things. He had chased after her immediately only to stop at the door and watch her do the packing. Alex was emotionally drained. He knew it…but he was also responsible for the situation in which they had found themselves and maybe all he could do was to make things right between them. He swallowed painfully as he watched Lola zip the bag. She was done.
Lola took a deep breath and stared at the divorce papers. Her fairy tale marriage and love story was over in no time. Was she at fault for staying mad at Alex? He had hurt her! Why wasn’t he fighting anymore? She swallowed and picked the papers up. “This is it, right?”
“Lola…”
She took a deep breath. “You swore that you were going to love me. You were going to protect me. You were going to make me happy, but all you have done is destroy me. Break me. Make a fool out of me and make me cry.” She started and dropped her bag from the bed to the floor. “Where did those good days go, Alex?” she asked with a faint smile. “Just look at us, Alex. Just look at us. You’ve ruined everything. You’ve destroyed us. You’ve-”
“-WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?” Alex yelled. “WHAT???” He asked as tear drops rolled down his eyes. “You don’t want me to fight for you, Lola. You want out. I am tired. I am sorry. I am drenched and I am tired. I am really tired. I can’t focus anymore, Lola. Every time I see you, I just want to be with you, but I can’t. I broke your heart and I am deeply sorry for it, but I can’t keep fighting a lost cause.”
“Lost cause?” Lola asked.
He nodded. “You don’t want to talk. You don’t want to listen. You don’t want to try.” He said. “Then there is George.”
“George?” Lola quizzed.
Alex looked away.
“You have got to be kidding me, Alex Ojo. George?”
He took a deep breath. “I didn’t mean it that way.”
“So what did you mean?” she asked. “Alex, that is so low.”
Alex swallowed. “Maybe you think of him now, right?”
“What?” Lola asked. “You are unbelievable.”
Alex sighed. “Do you still love me?”
Lola was silent.
“Say something, Lola. Please.”
Lola stayed silent.
“Lola, I am giving up on you. Say something, please.”
She took a deep breath and looked away.
“Lola, Say something!” Alex yelled.
“I have a right to be angry!” Lola screamed. “I have every right to be angry. You are responsible for everything.”
He nodded. “I know and I take the blame for it, but we can’t continue like this. You are not coming around. You hate me so much and you can’t heal here.” He said. He swallowed as he watched Lola wipe her tears. “Lola, I am sorry. I don’t know what to do anymore. I never saw this happening.”
Lola gaped as she pulled her bag. “There’s no need to talk about it anymore. We must have rushed things. I’ll just go. Maybe we were just a mistake.”
“No, Lola. You are my life. You are not my mistake.” Alex replied.
She nodded. “I know. You are my mistake.”
Alex’s heart ached.
Lola pulled her bag and walked up to him. “You were too good to be true, Alex Ojo.” She said. She then chuckled. “I should have known you were trouble, Alex. I should have known.”
Tears rolled down Alex’s eyes as he lifted his face to avoid her.
Lola placed a box in his hand. “That’s us, Alex.”
Alex squeezed the tiffany box with her ring painfully and stared at her. “Lola…”
Lola couldn’t hold back her tears as she crashed into Alex’s arms. “Alex, please…” she cried.
He hugged her till they slid onto the floor. “Lola, I am sorry.”
Lola took a deep breath and pulled away from him slowly. “Alex…”
“Lola…” he called back.
Lola leaned closely to him and kissed his forehead. She took a deep breath and rose to her feet. “I’ll send someone to get the rest of my stuff. We can meet with the lawyers on Monday to finalise everything.” She said and pulled her bag.
Alex held the bag back. “Please.”
Lola shook her head sadly. “No, this is goodbye. Take care of yourself.”
“Lola, I am sorry.” Alex said.
She nodded. “I am sorry too. I am still hopelessly in love with you.” She replied. “But, I’ll be fine.” She said and walked out, closing the door after her.

“What do you think you are doing?”
Mr David turned around as the Television went off. “I was trying to watch the game.”
“What game? Why were you at the gym with that guy?” she asked.
He stared at her. “What guy?”
“Alex.”
He smiled. “How did you know that I went to the gym with Alex? You were sleeping when he came by this morning.” He replied. “Come and sit with me.”
She took her seat with a frown. “That man hurt Lola and the next thing you do is go about throwing punches with him? Not fair.”
“Dear, Lola is too hurt to reason properly right now, all I am doing is trying to help her.” He said.
She stared at him. “And how are you doing that if I may ask?”
“It is top secret.” He replied and reached for the Television’s control. “May I please continue the game?”
“No. Not until you tell me what is going on.” She replied, keeping the control away.
“I can’t tell you else you are just going to blow it out of proportion.” He replied.
She stared at him. “What is going on, Mr David?”
“Mrs David…” he started with a smile. “It’s nothing we should worry our heads over.”
She took a deep breath. “Something isn’t very right here and I don’t like the smell of it.”
“It must be the food in the kitchen. Maybe it’s burnt.” He replied with a corny smile.
She jabbed him in the waist. “Come on, don’t be silly.”
He pulled her close as they chuckled. “My Lady, how did we make it this far? We are still so crazy about each other?”
“I missed all the better guys so I had to settle for you.” She replied with a soft laugh.
He smiled at her humour. “I have always loved your sense of humour.” He replied and pecked her forehead. “We made it here together because we are a team, because we know what it is like to hold something down. I have hurt you, you have hurt me and maybe not the way our baby girl is hurting, but we didn’t throw it all away. We fixed it and we are fine, darling. I know Lola is hurt, but she is also very strong and she is going to get through this.”
“I don’t know about it. This is too much for her. She didn’t bargain for it.”
He nodded. “But it has happened and we have to let life run its due course that we might be complete, lacking nothing.”
His wife stared at him bemused. “Did you just join a line from the bible to your motivating talk?”
He shrugged. “I might have. But that is not the point. We need to let Lola fix this. She knows the right thing to do and it certainly isn’t giving up now.”
“Alex just messed everything up.” She replied, sadly.
Mr David nodded. “You are right and I wish he had not done this, but we have to move on from it.”
The doorbell chimed. Mrs David stared at him. “Who are we expecting?”
“I…I don’t know.” He replied.
“I’ll go get it.” She replied and walked over to the door.
Mr David knew that if Alex had done everything according to a new plan, it would be Lola at the door.
Mrs David stared at her daughter and pulled her close for a tight hug. “It’s okay, my love. It’s okay.” She repeated as she took a crying Lola into the house.
Mr David looked away as he watched them go upstairs. He couldn’t bear to see his daughter in pain and he started to second guess his genius idea. Maybe he had just ruined her life with his ‘not-so-genius-plan’.
He hurried upstairs to meet them.
“Mom, he just signed them. He let me go.” Lola muffled amongst tears.
Her Mom hugged her tight. “Lola, let it go. You’ll be fine.”
Mr David cleared his throat. “This is what you wanted, right?”
“What I wanted? I wanted Alex to love me! To be faithful as I was. To take care of me! Not to cheat on me! I didn’t bargain for any of these, Dad!” she yelled.
“Watch your tone with me, young lady.” Mr David replied.
His wife turned to him in a flash. “This is not the time or place for any of this and you know it.” She rushed through clenched teeth.
He nodded as he took a deep breath. “I’ll be in the living room. Give her time to rest. We would talk about this over dinner.”
“There is nothing to say!” Lola yelled. “It’s all over for me.”
Her father swallowed and walked out.
“That is no way to talk to your Dad, Lola.” Her Mother started.
Lola wiped her eyes. “Mom, I don’t know what to do anymore. I can’t go on without Alex. I’ll die.”
“Of course, you can! Don’t allow your happiness to be hinged on anyone.” She said as she adjusted the pillows in the bed. “Now, you will go into the bathroom and have a nice shower, when you are out of the bathroom, take a good nap and we would talk when you have rested.”
“Mom! You can’t hear me.” Lola started as her tears rolled down. “I am not fine! I can’t take this.”
Her mother stroked her hair. “Take a shower, Lola and we would talk.” She said and walked out.
***
“What did you do that for?”
Mr David turned to his wife. “What…what do you mean?”
“Don’t give me that innocent face! You told Alex to sign the divorce. How could you?” she shouted.
Mr David pulled her hand and led her out of the living room into kitchen. “Why are you screaming?”
“Why won’t I scream? What sort of a father helps to tear his own daughter’s marriage? I should have known that you never wanted her to get married.”
He took a deep breath. “Women!!!” he stressed.
“What about women? Why do that to our girl?” she asked.
He pulled one of the chairs. “Please sit.”
“I am not in the mood for any of your romantic games now. You have to tell me the meaning of this nonsense.” She replied, taking a seat.
He smiled as he watched her sit. “Yes, I told Alex to sign the papers. But, it is not what you think. I would not want to see Lola get hurt.”
“Oh really? Se erin lo n rin loke yen? (Is she having a laugh up there ?) Lola is weakened. I have never seen her break down like that. It is not funny!” she retorted.
He nodded. “I know it is hard to see her like that and trust me, it is harder for me. But, the Lola we raised is really angry at her husband and might not forgive him if she continues staying in that home.”
“The Lola we raised?” she questioned. “People change! Lola might be angry but she sure can handle this in that house, not here. People are going to start talking about her. You of all people should know that.” She added.
He took a deep breath.
“Now, we are going to be visited by our neighbours regularly just to confirm that Lola has moved back in with her parents. Do you know what is going to happen to us in church? And our club meetings?” She asked.
He groaned. “Is that our biggest concern right now?”
“It might seem irrelevant and maybe not our biggest concern at the moment, but it is going to fuel our worries. So, maybe, yes. It is our biggest concern.” She replied.
He nodded. “I agree with you.”
“So, what is this grand plan of yours?” she asked.
He blinked. “It is not really grand…and considering the fact that Alex was wrong, it might be a cheap plan, but I think reverse psychology might work best in this situation.”
“Reverse Psychology?! Do you think Lola isn’t smart enough to know what is going on around her?” she asked.
Mr David smiled. “That’s the beauty of Reverse Psychology. You know it is being used on you but you can’t help it, because it hurts.” He replied.
“This doesn’t feel right.” She replied.
He nodded. “Lola is going to be fine. She loves Alex and he loves her too. He made a mistake and he is sorry about it. That marriage is going to be pointless if Lola stays with him filled with so much rage, she has got to find it in her forgive him and learn to rebuild that trust. If she succeeds, then she has a marriage. If not, then their divorce might just be real.”
Mrs David exhaled. “I don’t want my daughter to be hurt by this.”
“We are here for her. But, we are not going to help her take the easy way out of this. Sometimes, you have got to fight for what is truly yours.”
***
TWO WEEKS GONE
“So, Mr Idahosa is considering firing you due to your inefficiency in the past weeks.” Jude started as he stared at Alex who laid face down on his bed. “Alex?”
Jude took a second look at the room. It was littered with food wraps, clothes, bottles, and of course pictures. “Lola has moved on, Alex.”
“Get out!” Alex said.
Jude sighed as he took a seat. “Bro, you have kicked me out regularly in the past week, but today I am going to stay.”
Alex rolled over in Jude’s direction. “You have my attention now. What is it?”
“Why did you sign the divorce? Were you drunk” Jude asked.
Alex shook his head. “I was hypnotized.”
“Hypnotized?” Jude asked, slightly confused by Alex.
Alex took a deep breath and sat up. “My father-in-law told me to sign it and that when I did, we were going to work the reverse psychology on Lola and I did.”
Jude stared at him. “Guy? You mad? And you signed it?”
“It seemed like the smart thing to do at the time.” Alex replied.
Jude sighed. “Why didn’t you come to me for advice?”
“You? You are the devil.” Alex replied.
Jude nodded. “Fine, but I never would have told you to work the reverse thing on Lola. She is too hurt to want to listen.”
“I have not seen her in two weeks. She has barred me off her phone and I can’t even go to her house because the guards won’t even let me in. Worse, she hasn’t been to the office in two weeks, so, she is in that house.” Alex rambled. “What am I going to do?”
“It’s obvious Mr David played you. He used his wisdom to get his daughter’s freedom for that singing bird, George.” Jude retorted.
Alex nodded. “You may be right.”
“Of course, I am right! And you are here wallowing in pity when you should be fighting the old man for doing this to you.” Jude replied.
“Fighting?” Alex asked.
Jude nodded slowly. “Maybe not physically-”
“Can you be serious, Jude? This is my life we are talking about.” Alex replied.
Jude sighed. “I am sorry, I was just trying to make you happy.”
“It is not working.” Alex replied.
Jude nodded. “Okay, we have to come up with a plan and really fast. I hired someone to find out about your rival, George and he has a pretty scanty resume.”
“Resume?” Alex asked. “Are we hiring him?”
“No. He sings at Clandestine on Thursdays, he runs shifts at a mall and he volunteers at a kid’s home.”
Alex jerked. “Is that what you call scanty? He already sings like Legend and now he volunteers? Do you know how sensitive Lola is? She is going to adore him for his impeccable kindness!”
Jude sighed. “Oh boy! You have such natural bad luck.”
“Has she seen him in this last couple of weeks?” Alex asked as he drew close to Jude.
Jude scoffed. “How am I supposed to know that?”
“I thought you hired someone to watch him.” Alex replied.
Jude took a deep breath. “Based on the report I got, your wife, sorry, your ex-wife has been a really good girl.”
“I want to see her. I need you to help me come up with a plan.” Alex replied.
Jude clenched his teeth. “If I were you, I’d be worried about fatso who is threatening to fire you from work.”
“Idahosa can’t run that place without me.” Alex replied.
Jude nodded. “He knows. He has offered me a huge salary bump to take your place.”
“What are you saying, Jude?” Alex asked.
Jude smiled. “I turned him down and promised to get you back in shape, which he considered a better offer than having me in your place.”
Alex took a deep breath. “I want to see Lola again. Do you have a plan?”
***
Doubra handed Lola a glass of water. “How long will you continue like this?”
Lola stayed silent.
“You don’t look well. Let’s go to the hospital.” Doubra started. “I am tired of seeing you this pale.”
Lola turned to her. “You can go away.”
“Lola, you won’t get rid of me so easily. You might have succeeded in keeping your parents out of here but it won’t work for me.” Doubra replied as she drew the curtains back. “So, I take it as you have resigned to dying in here?”
“I’ll be over him soon.” Lola replied, weakly.
Doubra sighed. “Soon? How soon is soon? Look at you. You are fading away.”
“These things take time, Doubra. Just be patient.” She replied and drank some more water.
Doubra took a seat beside her bed. “I was thinking of getting us two movie tickets.”
“I am not going.”
Doubra nodded. “I haven’t bought them yet. I was just thinking.”
“Quit thinking.” Lola retorted.
Doubra checked her wristwatch. “I have to be at the office at noon. What do you want me to tell Oga?”
“Same thing you have been telling him. Unavailable.” Lola said and rose to her feet. “Excuse me.” She added as she hurried into the bathroom.
Doubra followed her to the bathroom. “Unavailable again? I think the man is getting bored.”
Lola puked into the tub and ran some water over her face. She then turned to Doubra. “I already sent in a letter notifying him of my absence, if that is not good enough for him, then, I am sorry.”
Doubra stared at her. “Lola, are you pregnant?”
“Pregnant?” Lola asked. “Where would I have gotten it?” she asked as she returned into the room.
Doubra followed her. “It’s just that the rate at which you have been throwing up in the last days is quite disturbing.”
Lola shrugged. “It must be malaria.”
“Have you taken any test to affirm it?” Doubra asked.
Lola sighed. “You are bugging me. What do I need a test for? I am not pregnant. I can’t be.”
“Why not?” Doubra asked. “Were you not intimate with your husband?”
“Not for a long time now. Ever since I got a whiff of his cheating, I stayed away.” She replied in a rush. “But…”
“But what?” Doubra probed.
Lola gaped as she took a seat. “It can’t be.”
“What can’t be, Lola?”
Lola stared at her. “It was just once. Oh my God!” Loa rushed to her drawer and pulled out her pregstrips. “Pass me the bottle of water.”
Doubra watched her friend as she nervously gulped the water and hurried into the bathroom, shutting the door after her. She took a deep breath and waited as she called ‘Lola’ several times to no avail.
After a while, the door opened and Lola stepped out.
“Lola, what is it? Talk to me.”
Lola stayed silent as she sat on the edge of her bed.
“Lola, you do know that these tests are like ninety-nine percent correct and you can take it many times to erode the possibility of the one percent?” Doubra started.
“I took it four times already.” Lola spoke up. “I am pregnant.”

Clandestine – Episode 7

EPISODE 7

It was only “common sense” for Alex to take three steps backward as soon as Mr David appeared before him. Mr David was one of the few men that Alex knew who still kept fit. He took early morning runs and was a fitness devout. Not like Alex wouldn’t be able to take him on in a bout but why would you even want to take on your father-in-law in the first place? The man looked ready for a fight. He had his fighting gloves in his hand and was dressed for the gym.
“I am going to the gym. Walk with me.” Mr David said and without another word, he started jogging off to the gym.
Alex stared at him as he jogged off. “But he said walk with me.”
Without another thought. Alex jogged off after him.
***
“You throw solid punches, Sir.” Alex said as he took off his gloves. He reached for a towel to wipe off the sweat trickles around his brows.
Mr David took a seat beside his future son-in-law and handed him a bottle of water. “When all you have got are two women in your life, you’ll feel the constant need to be enough for them.” He replied.
Alex stared at him, slightly confused. “I don’t follow, Sir.”
“Alex, I like to hit the gym. I have never stopped liking it. Being in the Military for as long as I have been is enough reasons to stay fit and it can’t go away now that I am out.” He said. “But, I just like looking good.” He added with a corny smile.
Alex nodded as he watched Mr David drink his water. He was surprised when he got a call from him that morning asking him to join him at the gym for a round bout. Mr David had also warned him not to breathe a word about it to Lola and he obliged. He had thought it a joke but after a couple of jabs to the floor, he realised that it was real and happening.
Mr David stared at Alex. “Please, don’t hurt her.”
“Excuse me?” Alex probed.
Mr David blinked. “I love my little girl so much. Make no mistake, her mother loves her equally and maybe even more, but Lola has always been my strength. She has always given me a reason to keep fighting for something in life. She’s always been so smart, so beautiful, so ambitious, so generous and loving. She’s pushed me beyond limits I never thought I’d reach and I am thankful for the women in my life and I love them so much and I am selfish, but I have to let Lola go…she has always been my princess, my girl, my little girl, but now she is a woman. A beautiful woman. A woman who no longer needs daddy everyday but her own man and she found you and you have to be a lucky man to have found her.” He said and looked up to hold back his emotions.
Alex was stunned at this moment. All this while, he had been reeling in the excitement of almost being a married man, but Mr David’s words had upset him. The man didn’t mean to upset him but there are ways you can say some words to frighten another person. Alex swallowed as Mr David wiped his forehead with the towel. “I…I won’t hurt her.” He said.
Mr David stared at him. “Do you just drive a knife through someone’s belly because it’s fun?” he asked.
Alex stared at him. “I…I don’t understand.”
“I am just saying that there might be tendencies for you to hurt her, but please, my baby girl doesn’t deserve it.” He said.
Alex swallowed painfully. “Sir, I love Lola and I promise to love her with all my life. I would never stop loving her, I would protect her and I won’t hurt her.”
Mr David nodded with some optimism but without total conviction. He had been married to his wife for about twenty-five years now and he still couldn’t say he had done everything right but they were still standing and that had to count for something.
Alex knew he’d wanted forever with Lola.
“The day you hurt her, I am going to hit you.” He said with a smile. “Anyway, let’s go home, the ladies would be waiting.” Mr David said as he gathered his bags.
“The ladies?” Alex asked.
Mr David smiled. “Nothing is more attractive than your woman seeing a fit man covered in sweat.”
Alex raised an eyebrow.
“Really? You didn’t know that?” Mr David asked with a soft chuckle. “Come on, Son. It’s not good to keep them waiting.” He said and walked out of the gym.
***
Alex took a deep breath as he strapped his gloves into his hand. He tried to avoid Mr David’s stern gaze which hadn’t left him since they got into the ring.
The Gym attendant joined them. “Sir, have you checked out your wrist?”
“I’ll be fine.” Mr David replied, without taking a look at the attendant. His eyes were on Alex who tried hard to pretend as if he couldn’t notice them.
The Gym attendant walked away.
Alex mustered all the courage he could and stared at him. “Sir, the reason why I called you-”
“-I don’t want to listen.” Mr David replied.
Alex nodded. “I know, but, I have to tell you what happened.”
“Do you think I do not already know? Do you think my family is not already aware that Lola has served you divorce papers?” Mr David asked him as he clenched his gloves together.
Alex blinked. “Okay, Sir. I…I know I have disappointed you.”
“No, you haven’t. It’s a work in progress.” He replied.
Alex was confused. He wiped some sweat off his face. “I am really sorry, Sir.”
Mr David stared at him. “That’s the problem. You are sorry.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Don’t say anything!” Mr David yelled. “I begged you. I told you not to hurt her. Why did you do it?”
Alex swallowed. “I was stupid.”
“And now?” The Older man asked.
Alex stared at him. “I…I don’t want to lose her.”
Mr David took off his gloves angrily and threw them to the floor. He then reached for the sides and took a seat. He was confused, sad and angry. “I just wish you didn’t do this, but it’s done, we need to find a solution to this and pretty fast too.”
Alex took off his gloves and watched Mr David as he seemed to be talking to himself. The man wouldn’t look at him. Was he so annoying or was he just expecting too much?
“Do you have a plan to win her back?” Mr David asked.
Alex stared at him. “I…I took her to our meeting spot and it turned out to be my biggest regret.”
Mr David stared at him. “Why? That’s supposed to be romantic.”
“She met someone else.” Alex said.
Mr David stopped for a moment. SHE MET SOMEONE ELSE? That didn’t seem like his Lola. But still it was amusing to hear Alex sulk saying it. The Older man burst into an awkward laugh. “Karma…Karma…”
Alex sighed. “Yes, I know. Karma.”
“But then, explain it to me. What exactly happened?” he asked.
“Apparently this guy had run into my Lola somewhere before and as fate would have it, he was at the bar and singing for the Lola he had met.” Alex started.
Mr David stopped him. “Let me get this right. He had planned a song for her not knowing she was married and coincidence would have him meet with her again when you were trying to rebuild your home?”
“Yes, sir. That’s exactly the situation.” Alex said.
Mr David shook his head. “This is serious.”
“I know.” Alex replied.
“Now, you need a real plan and this will take effort and you are not going to like it, but you are going to do it if you want to win Lola back.” Mr David said as he gathered his bags.
“I am ready to do anything. Anything.” Alex said eagerly as he joined Mr David in gathering the bags.
Mr David stared at him. “Let’s go home.”
“Err?” Alex asked looking confused.
Mr David nodded. “We’ll talk about it on the way home.”
Alex nodded. “Thank you so much, Sir. I really-”
Mr David silenced Alex with a punch in the face. Alex crashed to the floor from the effect. Mr David felt the pain in his hand as he tried to stretch his wrist. “I said I would hit you if you ever hurt my daughter. I meant it.” He added as he stared at Alex. “Now, let’s go.”
Alex massaged his face and for the next second he thanked God that Lola didn’t have brothers.
***
Lola pulled up at the mall. She had woken up and searched for Alex to no avail. Her pride wouldn’t allow her call him so she decided to ignore the thoughts that maybe something terrible had happened to him. The burden to know his whereabouts rested on her heavily. Why she couldn’t get over a man that had hurt her deeply was like a mystery to her. She was supposed to be mad at him, but she couldn’t help feeling guilty for last night’s dinner being close to a disaster despite all of Alex’s efforts to try to make it work. But she wasn’t going to give herself room to be sorry. Alex hurt her and she won’t take the punishment for it. She would do the household shopping like a dutiful wife that she was until she finally separated from Alex.
She moved the trolley swiftly from the food to the toiletry section and in no time, she was done. It was routine for her. She arrived at the counter and started to arrange her goods on the table. The attendant turned towards her. Her heart skipped a beat as she stared at him. “So you work as an attendant too?”
George smiled at her. “We keep running into each other.”
“Coincidence. Please take my order.” She said as she looked away.
He smiled faintly. “My shift is actually over, but I’ll take your order.” He replied and started preparing her an invoice.
Another attendant joined them. “George, thanks a lot, man.”
“I’ll be out of here soon.” George said to him.
George packed up Lola’s order. “Here you go, ma’am. Your bill is twenty-five thousand naira.”
The other attendant stepped forward. “I’ll take over from here, George. You need to leave.”
George nodded and stepped away.
Lola watched him leave till he was no longer in sight and then finished up her order.
She pushed her trolley out of the mall and into the car park.
“Ma’am!”
Lola turned and watched George as he ran across cars to meet up with her. She chuckled slightly as she watched him stop a moving car just to get across.
“Ma’am? That’s a nice name.” she said as she opened the car trunk.
George smiled and helped her with her bags. “How are you doing?”
“Very well, and you?” she asked as she shut the trunk.
He nodded. “I am good.”
“So…you work as an attendant too?” she probed.
He nodded. “Yes, I do.”
“Interesting.” She replied and walked over to the driver’s seat.
George cleared his throat. “Are you busy?”
“Busy?” she asked.
“Like…do you want to go somewhere with me?” he asked.
She stared at him. “Go somewhere with you? Wouldn’t that be weird? I just came to get groceries.”
He nodded. “My Bad. I…I just want to get to know you…and I know that it sounds ridiculous, but I…I just want to.”
Lola took a deep breath and stared at her wristwatch. “Where are we going to?”
“I know a really nice spot some blocks away.” He replied. “We could walk.” He added.
Lola shrugged and locked the car. “Okay.”
“So…how’s the weekend going?” George started as they walked.
She stared at him. “The weekend hasn’t even started. It’s still morning.”
“Yes, forgive me. I am just excited.” He replied.
She stopped and stared at him. “George?”
“Yes?”
“I am married.”
He nodded. “Okay…I am just getting to know you.”
“No. You know what you want and it can never happen.” She replied.
He blinked. “But…but you-”
“-don’t seem happy?” she asked.
He nodded. “You seem so sad…hurt and in a lot of pain.” He replied.
She smiled and stared at the eatery. “Pizza spot?”
“Yeah.” He replied and pushed the door open. “After you.”
George made the order and joined her at their seat. “So, I guess my feelings are going to waste.”
Lola smiled. “Your feelings? Do you just catch…I mean, do you just literally catch feelings for someone from seeing her once?”
“Haven’t you heard about love at first sight?” he asked.
Lola scoffed. “Do you believe in that?”
“I do. As a matter of fact, maybe that’s what happened to me. I couldn’t get you out of my mind since that day and I haven’t been able to yet.” He said as he took a bite from the pizza. “Maybe you could help me?” he asked with a smile.
Lola sighed. “George, I am married and that makes me unavailable.”
“Okay…let’s be friends.” He said.
She smiled. “Friends? George…come on. You don’t just ‘let’s be friends’ after what I know you want.”
“Lola, you are married. I respect that.” He replied.
“Then, move on.” She said, cutting in. “You’d be fooling yourself by spending more time around me and expecting it to all go away.” She concluded as she took a bite from the pizza. “This is good pizza.”
George blinked as he watched her eat. “What happened to your marriage?”
“I don’t understand.” She said as she wiped her mouth.
He swallowed. “You are a good woman. A very good woman. What went wrong?”
“How are you so sure that I am a good woman?” she asked.
He shrugged. “I just know it.”
“George, it is never as it seems.” She replied.
He sighed. “I don’t believe you. How did he hurt you?”
“Of what good would it do if we have this discussion? We are flying around in circles, George.” She said.
“Why are you a good woman, Lola?” he asked.
She shrugged with a smile. “All the bad people are already taken.”
He nodded. “Lola, I like you very much. And it hasn’t changed knowing that you are married. I respect you and your marriage and I am going to stay away from your marriage but not totally away from you. I am going to be there in every corner, watching, waiting and hoping…”
Lola sighed. “Hope can be a very feeble thing to hang on to.”
“I’ll take my chance.” He replied.
“I’d never be yours.” she said dumbly. Lola wasn’t convinced of that statement when she made it but she just did. “I’d never be yours.” she reiterated.
George clenched his teeth. “I know…it’s a big deal to fight for a married woman.”
“No. It’s a big deal to fight for a woman in love.” She replied with moist eyes. She picked her keys and purse. “I have to go now.”
George took a deep breath and rose to his feet. “Would you give a number?”
“No. I can’t give you any real opening.” She said and approached the door. She stopped and stared at him. “Besides, you always seem to find me.” She concluded with a faint smile and walked out.
George swallowed painfully. He had heard so much to make him give up, he knew the battle to win Lola’s heart just went a notch higher. That did hurt painfully. He sipped some juice to ease his pain, and then he descended on the pizza and then he wouldn’t stop eating it.
***
Jude stepped back as Alex walked into his house. “Morning, bro.”
“Good morning.” Alex replied and took a seat.
Jude took a seat opposite him. “What’s up? You look like a mess.”
“I am a mess.” He said.
Jude stared at him. “Why?”
“You know why.”
“Lola, right?” Jude probed with a sigh. “Man, you have no idea how stupid I feel about allowing you do the score game with women right now.”
“It’s not entirely your fault. A better man would have done the right thing.” Alex said.
Jude blinked. “You are a good guy, Alex.”
“Don’t patronize me.” He replied as he rose to his feet.
“I take it as yesterday’s dinner didn’t go well.” Jude said as he joined him by the window.
Alex nodded. “It was a disaster. I am losing her. She is not even flinching. She hates me too much.”
“Alex, I think you should chill. Lola doesn’t hate you. She is probably just too mad at you right now. Maybe I should see her?”
Alex shook his head. “Nah…I have something I must do if I need to get her back. I am not so sure about it though.”
“What is it?” Jude asked.
Alex returned to a seat. “I don’t know if I want to talk about it now.”
“It’s okay if you don’t want to talk. Just think through and think really hard about it. If it is worth it, go for it. If not, don’t take a chance.” Jude replied.
“Jude!!!” A female voice echoed from inside the house.
Alex looked concern as he turned around.
Jude smiled at Alex. “You know what it is.”
“Bro, haven’t you learnt a thing from me?” Alex asked.
Jude shrugged with a grin. “I have learnt a lot…and I don’t know if I can keep mighty Jude zipped even when married, so I won’t even get married.”
“Love happens, Jude.” Alex said, rising to his feet.
Jude nodded. “I have got a bullet for cupid. It ain’t biting me with that love bug anytime soon.”
Alex took a deep breath. “I feel sorry for you.”
“I feel sorrier for you, Alex. You are the one about to lose all the gold you’ve got. Fight for Lola. Good women are hard to find.” Jude replied as he led Alex to the door.
Alex nodded. “Take care, bro.”
“And you too, man. Hang in there.” Jude said as they hugged.

Lola felt like she was doing something wrong by even giving George the opportunity to sit with her. Maybe it was true that women did know how to emotionally cheat on their spouses without even going to bed with another guy. Did she portray herself as available to George by even accepting to talk to him? She didn’t know if she was staying angry at Alex for too long but she didn’t know if she could trust him easily again.
She ran her fingers through her hair as she cried. All she wanted was for someone to tell her that she would be able to trust Alex easily again. It seemed so hard at the time. She was driving in her car alone and if anyone needed convincing, it was her…and yes, she had to do it alone.
She stepped on the brakes as she approached the traffic sign. She took a deep breath as a police officer approached her.
“Just my luck!” she said.

Alex stared at the clock and the door. He had taken different postures while waiting for Lola for some time now. Could she have packed out of the house already? Lola might be mad at him but he knew she wouldn’t just do that. It wasn’t her nature.
He heaved a huge sigh as the gates opened and her car drove in. His heart pounded faster than ever at the fear and thought of losing Lola. The door opened and he watched her walk in with the grocery bags. He hurried to meet her. “Let me take them.” He said and collected the bags.
He returned to the living room almost immediately. Lola had sunk into a chair. She looked exhausted. “Hi.” He said.
She ignored him.
“Lola?”
She turned in his direction without saying a word.
“Lola, do you still love me?” he asked. “Please?”
She sighed and looked away.
“Lola, say something. Please.”
Lola scoffed and started to walk away from him.
“Lola!!!” he yelled.
Lola stopped and stared at him. “What?!” she yelled back.
“Lola David, I have signed the divorce papers. They are upstairs. You can go.” He replied with wet eyes.
Lola gaped as her eyes went wet.
